Blud yapping ahead: i think the point of this video is to dismantle the notion (which was popular in the media at the time of the video's creation, and tbh is still popular with elden ring lol) that these games need an easy mode "because of disabled people who require accessibility". it's clear OP disliked being used as a shield or a means to push an agenda, so he wanted to refute this idea that people like him dont want the core experience or that journalists can speak for all disabled people. i think his gameplay is very impressive, and i agree that journalists shouldnt try to speak for all disabled people. but at the same time, i feel like that's what he, and everyone who throws around this video, is kinda doing. thus i have a point of dissent. i agree with one point of the video, that journalists shouldnt speak for all disabled people. but i disagree with another point of the video, that "disability is not an excuse". i disagree with this core thesis and interpretation of the video. he is essentially saying, "i can do it, so why cant you?" to me it seems similar to your run-of-the-mill elitism. only, his disability is distracting from this fact, as people may forget it's possible for disabled people to be elitist. he practically says to other disabled people, "your disability isnt an excuse and shouldnt hinder you, just be better". to be fair i dont think he's intending at all to be elitist. i think he's trying to be inspiring. but i think there's a limit before it turns into a kind of toxic positivity. i think no one should try to speak for everyone. not able bodied journalists, and not disabled gamers. the fact is, there still exist some disabled gamers for whom an easy mode would be helpful. to refuse this fact on the basis of an extreme example where one uniquely proficient disabled gamer didnt need assistance is unreasonable imo. i also find this second point of the video to be a little self refuting. if disability is something to be seen as bolstering the difficulty, such that "even" he, a disabled gamer, can beat it, then i think that underscores why other people who face similar challenges may want assistance, and i think that's a fair desire. some comments here are pointing out that that games need to be more accessible, not easier. but i think this is kind of superficial diplomacy. it overemphasizes semantics. making a game easier is one way (though indeed, not the only, or best, way) to make it more accessible. thus, i dont think suggesting it should be seen as the crime it is. then again, the suggestion has itself become a bit of a politicized tool, so i wont argue the point too finely, and will instead just concede this bit. in sum, i think the quadriplegic player's achievement is very impressive and should not be discredited. i think the video succeeds in arguing why able people shouldn't speak for all disabled people. however, i think it fails to support the further claim that it definitively proves why easy mode isn't an idea worth discussing altogether, as this would hypocritically be presuming to speak for all disabled people, and ultimately is an argument based in elitism (do note, im NOT arguing that any argument against easy mode is elitist. only this argument, "i can do it so others should be able to too").
