The problem with referrals: Churn will eventually match the referral rate. That is why SO MANY agencies get stuck revenue-wise.

I find that onboarding people at the same time allows for them to ask each other questions on what they may be covering or if they're having issues, they tend to ask one another first. Also, they feel like they're not the only one who is the new kids on the block.

If you have multiple hires at the same time, it is definitely helpful to do at least some of the onboarding together -- for the very reasons you mention. Also, onboarding can be useful to existing team members, too, since their roles in it help to increase their own engagement and perhaps gives a fresh look at existing practices. However, I also believe that most small agencies should try to avoid multiple hires at the same time because each new team member changes the dynamic and may shift what you think you need in that next hire.

Great advice overall Chip! A biggie for a lot of the smaller agencies is getting complacent with their own marketing and sales when they're busy. So many are also scared to make that first hire but as you said once you get over it, life get's a lot easier esp if you take the time with the right hire!

Absolutely! The most important time to focus on business development is when you are busiest with client work. Otherwise you end up on the revenue rollercoaster in a feast-or-famine cycle.

You both speak the truth! Sole practitioners and small agencies cannot afford to invest the time and costs to compete with larger agencies that have unlimited resources. The ridiculous requirements and demands don't accommodate the growing percentage of people who are working more nimbly these days. I've all but given up on PRSA's Silver/Bronze Anvils for this reason. BTW, of all the 2023 awards only one went to a sole practitioner. This is proof of concept.

Great discussion. It becomes tricky when your remote team spends different cultures and communities across the globe, but it is worth acknowledging the days important to your team. Also, I find that people do tend to work hard before and after so it's a wash to me. Somehow, they magically make up for those extra eight hours within a week if not sooner.

    • @realchipgriffin

Yes, international teams become much more complicated! Holidays, working hours, vacation time, and all sorts of other things differ so much from one place to the next that it requires a lot of flexibility and understanding -- not to mention learning. I also agree that for the most part it doesn't make a huge difference. The clock-watchers who do the minimum to survive will do so no matter what (and generally shouldn't be part of your team). Everyone else tends to find a way to at least triage appropriately.
