With all due respect, Secretary-General Varoufakis, I disagree with your suggestion that debt is essential to capitalism. I believe that if we develop a more balanced republic form of government rather than a democracy, we can ensure that no powerful entities can dictate what those in the lower socioeconomic classes "must" endure, for the benefit of the elites, the rich and powerful. In other European democracies, they use social and economic rights and standards to provide for a livable standard of life. In America, dept is used like a noose to enslave those below the elite, and to usurp their time and energy, and to make them virtual prisoners to debt. If corporations did not misuse their wealth and power, if they were not able to corrupt politicians to remove the many laws and agencies that had been developed after the Great Depression, they would never become as rich and powerful as they have, and they would not be able to leverage that power over the disenfranchised, and rapidly shrinking, American middle-class as they have. Wow, it seems that Yanis Varoufakis is being incredibly naive to suggest that the Enclosure Movement (legal privatization of public grazing lands) wasn't a deliberate action to create a large workforce of desperate and impoverished citizens.
