Northwood Arctic Fox 865 Truck Camper One Year Review
In this video we take you on a complete tour and review of our 2023 Northwood Arctic Fox 865 Truck Camper, after one full year of ownership. We show you the ins and outs of our Camper, and highlight some of the things that we like and dislike of the AF865 Truck Camper. To open your stove vent... just drop in any rv dealer and ask them if they have any of the manual awning metal pull rods laying around. That's the perfect tool for that job but noone can figure it out since manual awnings are basically obsolete.
@@ToddStull thanks
Loved the video! On your step out in the bathroom, I would make that whole section a platform that would hide that bottom drawer and make the top of the platform a lift up with struts, that way you could still use the drawer and create a new storage space. Please show us an update when you get it done with it!
@@barbarahampton4702 thanks
@@barbarahampton4702 we will try to get a video once we get it updated
We have owned six truck campers in five years and have never used the black tank saniflush system. We use Dawn and TwentyMuleTeamBorax to keep the black tank working like new we have owned four Arctic Fox campers and one Adventurer and one Northern Lite and have never had a problem with the black tanks. We now have a AF 1150 now which is gorgeous that we purchased ten days ago. A fox is a great camper enjoy.
@@Dr.cynthiabrandt2016 Yes it is.
great review. Thx. I like the moto mounts on the RV. Would love to see a vid of your mounts and suspension leveling. Motos are heavy. JUst curious what mods you made to accommodate.

While i dont own a truck camper, in 2015, under the advice my rv tech friend, i purchased a northwoods Arctic Fox travel trailer, its about to turn 10 yrs old, and im still impressed with the quality of this trailer, ive used it so much in 10 years, even living in it, for over 1 year.. other than replacing the stereo once, it's been flawless
@@Liimpy Northwood has an excellent build quality.

Excellent video! Yours is a newer version of ours. My wife and I bought a 2012 AF 865 last year. We love it! And bought it for that awesome panoramic view across the back as you pointed out. One of the first things I did was install that bar on the door as well. I also use that outdoor storage cubby above the water fill for my bag of tools, it is a great space. Very nicely done video.
@@whuop-wadeshumbleopinion625 thank you. We love our AF865! As I’m sure you do yours as well.
Thank you for the video. Will the air conditioning work off of the solar? Or do you have to be plugged in to shore power or using the generator? If it doesn’t, is there an upgrade you can do for the air-conditioning to work off solar and batteries?
@@jbr555s From the factory the A/C is not set up to run off solar, so it has to be hooked to shore power, or the generator has to be on. To the best of my knowledge (bc I haven’t done it yet) I believe if I had enough solar it could be hooked up to a converter and ran off of the solar, but I don’t know enough about that to give you a true and accurate answer.
I was curious about any available space under the dinette seats. I am aware it converts into an additional sleeping area, is there storage space? Thanks!!
@@louisesblues yes. It has a slide out drawer under each seat. And the Exterior Joey Slide out Tray actually runs up under there as well.
I would highly encourage you to look at a Bigfoot Truck Camper 25C10.6E
For the bathroom step, make a platform with feet on the drawer side and a hinge on the bathroom side that flips up toward the bathroom when you need to get in the drawers.
@@genecappelletti6691 I really like that idea. I will have to look into that, and try it out.

Your door window shade, is good old Lippert, and I have now gone through two sets, as both sets have warped from the sun. The blinds mounting bar (plastic) has warped n wont stay locked in. You can pop the shade out by flipping those tiny little sliders u see on the frame, (two on top n two on bottom of each window frame) the shade can be mounted upside down. It's identical in its top n bottom mounting bar. You can also adjust the tension to make the blind stay up! It's actually a very simple design n if you pop the blind out you'll see! Anyway, the mounting bars is what warped on me top n bottom 🙄, so those little slider clips wont hold the blind in place. Both windows in my door so that's 4 shades. I just bought magnetic shades to sticky mount on the window frame, hope they work. Anyway, If they only made the mounting bars out of aluminum the dang things wouldn't warp from the sun! So be glad yours at least haven't warped. And I wish my side awning was electric too 🫤. Yeah we all have the 'it's almost perfect' syndrome of our campers lol. 🍻
@@SpykersB yes, I’m glad they haven’t warped yet. I will have to try taking them out and flipping them over. Thanks for the tip.
Looks very good. Enjoy.
@@Sonja-u3n Thank you. It was delicious.
Why, would they place a light controlling and awning controlling unit WAY UP above the entry door where you have to reach??????? Any lighting or awning control should be down a t chest level.
@@lakeseminole yes I agree.
His volume is too low - no sound from his mic

BAD IDEA I do not think that’srecommended by the camper manufactures and hard on the camper bottom box structure sense there’s no support on back of truck and camper
@@shearenergy8203 it actually sits exactly in the same spot as it did on my short bed truck. The center of gravity is in the same spot over my rear axle. The additional length of a long bed truck is between the cab of the truck and the rear axle. So it’s actually the same as having it on a short bed, other than you have extra space between the camper and the cab.
Great video and info. on AF 865! Looks like you have the short box version of 865 (has generator) on a long box truck. Any issues or thoughts on this configuration if we do the same on our long box truck?
@@PJSmith-sn1sf we haven’t had any issues. Just make sure that your center of gravity is still over the rear axle. You may have to build a small box like we did between the camper and the back of the cab of the truck to keep the camper from trying to move forward.

I have an rv thats a 30 foot long drive. Would you think putting it on the front of what is basically a 1999 450.
@@georgehennen As long as you put an extension on the front you would be fine.
I just gotta say it, your woman is amazing. Such great organizational skill. Love it, I am seriously considering this camper and you all have put in so much to make it better by a long shot. The Northwood company would do well to see what modifications you all have done and put that in as options. I have been on the fence about the oven though. I love baked goods so not having it would be hard for me. I am not up on the convections ones yet so I will have to investigate a bit more to see if that will do or not. Again thanks so much for putting this our there. This is one of the very best videos about living in a camper I have seen.
No what else works, a trailer.👍🏼 I also carry water, gas, chairs, etc. Using a trailer also takes some weight off the truck. It’s just easier to pull the weight rather than carrying it on the truck. I used to carry my bike on the back.
@@lawrence7065 yes. I’m planning on moving to a trailer so I can haul a larger Motorcycle

How loud is the AC? We rented a travel trailer recently and it couldn't carry on a conversation with the AC on! Also I might have missed it but what does this TC weigh? Finally, when it rains, how much do you hear it on the roof? Thanks!
@@mattwlane the AC is not as loud as some of the other campers I’ve had, but it is loud with it on. Luckily we use our max air fan mostly. In the summer we do use it. It’s not unbearable to talk over it but it is loud enough to have to. The dry weight sticker on the camper says 2,800 lbs, but that’s simply not accurate. With it loaded it’s closer to about 4,800 lbs. I weighed it empty when I purchased it and it weighed about 3,800 lbs. The rain is not that noticeable on the roof, however on the vent covers you can hear it but the insulation keeps it pretty quiet on the inside. I hope that helps some. If you’re looking at an Arctic Fox truck camper you won’t regret it, and we love the 865! We’ve owned a 37’ travel trailer, a Hideaway by Sunlight Truck Camper (very tight compared to the AF865), a Coleman Pop-up camper, and a 40’ Fifth Wheel and the build quality and insulation in the Arctic Fox is better than any we’ve had before.
@@TheOxandTheFox Thanks for the reply. Ever wish you had a slide for the extra space?
@@mattwlane we had 4 slides in the 40’ 5th wheel and it seemed like every time it rained I found a new seal to replace. lol, so when we went back to a Truck Camper we specifically chose the 865 bc we did not want a slide, just so I would not have to deal with that additional maintenance. I will admit that I’ve been in some of my friends and acquaintances’ Arctic Fox 1140s and 1150s and they have more room with the slide out.
@@TheOxandTheFox I do like the simplicity of the non slide! Always trade offs I guess. Do you experience any issues with having a short bed TC on your long bed truck? I wish the long bed came with a generator.
@@mattwlane I haven’t had any issues yet with the short bed camper on the long bed. The center of gravity is still over the rear axle in the same place that it was over my short bed f-250 that I originally hauled it in. The plus to it is I have a little extra storage between the cab and the camper now.

@@bikingal4283 thanks. I hope it will be just as helpful.
This is more like what not to do. U should be flushing the tank out n using a brush to clean out the sediment when u change the anode rod. And if u keep water in that tank all year around then every 6 months u should be doing a flush n anode rod change. This is why i hate suburban tanks, vs aluminium (Atwood) dometic tanks. They are more work to properly maintain. 🍻
@@SpykersB yes you are correct I do flush it, I don’t keep water in all year. I should have included that in the video as well.
