How to Hit High and Low Pitches | Be a Great Hitter
Are you a good high-ball hitter?
Are you a good low-ball hitter?
Here are some adjustments to make so you can be good at both.
Good hitters don't have separation between their hands and their body. Good hitters have connections between hands and body. Good hitters have tilt.
We want the shoulders to match the plane of the bat at contact. Higher pitches will have less tilt. Lower pitches will have more tilt.
When our hands separate from the shoulders, we find ourselves hitting more roll over groundballs and pop ups.
When we hit a low pitch our finish will be higher. When we hit a high pitch our finish will be lower.
Try matching your shoulder plane to your bat plane to elevate your ability t...

    We do a similar drill but substitute an old, fold-up, resin picnic table for the tire. Not only does this teach the athletes not to dump the barrel, but allows them to experience what it feels like for the barrel to be on plane. We want them to keep the barrel in the zone for as long as possible. Invariably they will hit the table the first few swings, but they learn pretty quickly to keep the barrel on plane. The kids kind of dismiss it, but I find its the single, most effective hitting drill we perform. Instant results.

      Thanks for your input. We like to take the "feels" of hitting oppo and apply them to inside pitches from time to time. We are not going to work on pulling inside pitches with swings that have mechanical flaws. Taking the oppo approach allows mechanics to work themselves out. Then we can apply those swings to all pitch locations.

      @@fullcountbaseballandsoftba8789 so how does an inside out swing hit an inner half fastball? I agree that training a pull swing ends up with the front shoulder flying out and hitters pulling off the baseball however if you don’t turn on the inside pitch, you’re going to get nubs off the hands. There was never a truer statement than it the ball where it’s pitched.

    • @fullcountbaseballandsoftba8789
      @fullcountbaseballandsoftba8789 2 месяца назад

      @@wesleyturner1979 Again. It's not that we don't train inside pitches and pull them. It's just when we find someone with major mechanical flaws, it's easier to work with them on hitting oppo then many of the mechanical flaws work themselves out. As for hitting the inside pitch with this approach, there was a really good baseball player in the 90s who was the best at this....#2 Jeter! In games, yes, hit it where it's pitched. React to the inside and pull it. When training, work to take the inside pitch up the middle or oppo to help keep the bat path through the ball and more directional. If we constantly pull, pull, pull, we end up getting around the ball hitting ground balls, and slicing pop ups. Or you hit it good but it has side spin and curves foul.

  • @wesleyturner1979
    @wesleyturner1979 Год назад

    Your turn is correct however your bat path isn’t optimal. The high level swing has some funky drills to get you on the correct bat plane. In your demonstration, you swing down on the ball which we have all decided is not correct. I hit well in high school with your exact swing. I was also using a very light -5 bat that was over juiced. After HS with heavy bats, it was a train wreck. You could use your turn, but your bat path needs to drop your barrel off your shoulder down to at least a level plane. A down angle reduces the length of time to make contact with the ball. A bat path on plane with the ball extends the time so you can be slightly off and sill hit the ball well. Work on turning that barrel!

  • @gregsilver1640
    @gregsilver1640 Год назад

    What you are saying in your video is correct and you do not want to be steep to the ball. If you pause your video around 2 minute 39 seconds and pause at launch and then the turn and then contact you are going to see you are very steep and doing what you said exactly not to do. Your hands at set up were above your ears like Trout but unlike Trout whos hands come down to at or below his shoulders like every other mlb player yours stay above your ears at launch and from there you take your hands directly down about a foot to the ball. That makes your swing steep and possibly disconnected. That is contrary to your instructions in the beginning of your video that happen to be correct. And dropping your hands to the shoulder level just before getting to launch is not necessarily dumping the barrel. your hands should be in a sense are an extention of your back shoulder and have a connected swing. Your hands should not be moving up or down as they are coming forward. That can be performed by either lowering your hands before launch during the stride like many old time hitters or preferably these days via hip hinge and setting your path or plane via your hip hinge creating the correct plane for your shoulders and bat to be on for a powerful connected swing with the barrel getting in the zone early and staying in long for power and consistency respectively. Your instruction in the beginning is correct and your swing motion is not nor as you instructed. Opposite of the common feel vs real when they say swing down but actually swing on plane and correctly. One last thing the correct swing is the swing that gets the batter good results. It is not a one size fits all. Yes 99 percent of mlb players have the same swing from launch position and are on plane and connected with the barrel turning behind them deep in the zone but that does not mean it is correct for everyone. If a player can hit for high average and power with a steep disconnected swing or even a slow pitch softball swing or whatever than that is the correct swing. I am not a math or physics teacher nor a "hitting instructor " I am only some guy. Some guy that may know a little about hitting baseballs. Maybe not. And btw "hitting instructors" are funny. Since there are no required schooling and exams and licensing requirements people simply say they are a hitting instructor and start instructing or take a job as a hitting instructor even with an mlb team or likely milb team first or earlier but most of the time online and little kids with nobody to be able to say much. Tomorrow maybe I am going to become an astronaut and the day after a dr and this way when I make a comment on a video I can start my comment by saying I am an astronaut and that is not how to properly fly a rocket to the moon or I am a dr and it is not the correct way to perform plastic surgery. People are bananas. Keep up the good work bud your instruction is spot on. Fix the path in the video though. Be good

    The more that I learn about swing mechanics, the more I am coming to the conclusion that deceleration generates the whip to really make for a high velocity swing. That said, I hate this metaphor every time I hear it. The water in the cup was always going 60mph, hitting the brakes did not change that. I think more like crashing the drivers side of the car into a telephone pole. What happens to the passenger side? It immediately begins rotating. I'm sure there's a better metaphor too. But the "car brakes make stuff in the car fly" metaphor just isn't valid science and is a disservice IMO to the scientific basis for deceleration creating whip in the bat.

      On low our outside pitches, tilting forward is problematic as you are trying to view an object with 1 vs. 2 eyes. The hula hoop idea is fine if you are trying to hit a stationary object like a golf ball. Here’s the deal. It is crucial to be flexible in two aspects of the swing….the upward trajectory of the bat (10 to 15 degrees) to meet the downward ball trajectory and the angle of the hands relative to the barrel (dependent on pitch location). Over steepening the barrel (along with exaggerated shoulder tilt) makes it much more difficult to hit moving pitches, because the barrel is only on plane for a short time. Also….have a look at how these swings are finished. The front arm is bent awkwardly and away from the body to reproduce the hula hoop arc. All great hitters who make consistently solid contact (Bonds, Aaron, Griffey JR.) have both of their arms forming a tight V with the bat at contact time. Teaching a hula hoop swing completely seems to rob you of using the long levers of the arms and the final barrel acceleration from the top hand pronating. I’m certainly not advocating true level swings, but over steepening is also highly problematic. I believe this has much to do with the ills of modern hitting and why Judge strikes out 30% of the time, and the greats (Aaron, Bonds, etc.) struck out four times less often.

  • @tomw485

    Great video. It always drove me crazy when people associated bat path with launch angle. Bat path should always be the same… In plane with the pitched ball. It’s where on the ball the the bat makes contact that produces launch angle. The number one goal should be to consistently hit barrels whether it’s a line drive, deep fly ball or hard ground ball. When your swing is really dialed in and you’re consistently making hard contact then you can start focusing on launch angle a little bit and turning more singles into doubles and homers.
