The wirst Things was that cards wouldn't fit with card sleeves on and as someone who brought his cards to friends and school have his cards in sleeves. To u sleeve every card just to play with this was just dumb so I spelled them for 20€
I never owned one, but even as a kid I wondered how you were supposed to actually duel with them. Surely it would actually be really impractical, since you can't see your opponent's side of the field? Like a chess match where you can only see half the board.
Is this still viable with a couple extra Staples? Im thinking of going to YCS Orlando but an full master Duel pilled 😅
"I'm banishing you to the Shadow Realm!" "Noooooooooo..." "Much better"
4kids censorship- let’s replace death with Hell in all but name only
let's ban pot of greed. (also konami) lets make several versions of pot of greed.
The manga for GX went a lot harder with this and made it much more continuous with the prior manga series. I believe it was also the case in the anime but went a little more focused on and detailed in the manga. The biggest aspect being Tragodea. In the anime he is defeated before the end with the duel against Yugi being the final sending off note. He also is a later and bigger villain but amongst a lot of others that are unrelated. In the manga his influence is much more prevalent throughout the archs and is the final big bad. He is very much like Bakura and there is a reason. He was another survivor of Kul Elna who was recognized for his astrology skills. He was taken in by Atem's father to be his personal astrologist as a show of good faith to the city of thieves. In the anime, I think they Flanderised him to be easier to hate as a general villain but in the manga he was genuinely a lot more innocent of a guy. He was the original wilder of the ring however and started to fall to its influence. Further, he learned the truth about the items and his city which caused him to believe the Pharaoh betrayed him. He set off to confront the king but the other high priests got to him first and confronted him. He thus became the first person banished to the shadow realm. Things were adjusted to recognize the realm as one in the same as the void Zorc had been imprisoned in. This makes some sense but means Tragodea was the very first mortal soul to be banished there. It's basically a hellish dimension of darkness and complete sensory deprivation. Considering Zorc is a being or fallen angel fueled by all the evil and maliciousness of humanity, the realm he was entrapped with is directly fed or swarming with that energy. Also keep in mind all the items and shadow magic used by the priests were from Zorc. The millennium Spellbook and ritual used was HIS and a contract to free him through sacrifices in exchange for those granted powers. If you think about it, everything aligns with his skill set of soul manipulation. The manifestation, entrapment, etc of Ka are manipulations of the soul. The entrapment or souls in the pendant, splitting/implanting of soul shards and everything else is related to his direct power..a power also infused in his shadow real. And yes..other beings have been trapped there in the original series during modern time, but as you mentioned, they get freed fast..but not Tragodea. The number of thousands of years shirts depending on English or Japanese version, but the point is that he had been trapped there for multiple thousands of years regardless. He actually wound up fusing and integrating with the realm along with the powers the environment could bestow. He was essentially a successor to Zorc through that shadow realm and developed shadow powers similar. He literally became a demon and was eventually able to escape by possessing the bodies of humans in our modern world. The other thing about the shadow realm is that it helped to clarify the idea of multidimensional existence. I. The original manga, the shadow games were not strictly a Egyptian or Zorc thing. They were more a spirit related thing with angels, demons and other powerful spirit beings being behind them. We learn Chinese buhdista played a shadow game using cards and actual dragon spirits in a ritual. The losers soul was trapped in a jar with the dragon spirits who devoured it over a hundred years time. Only one soul could be contained at a time so if another game was played the loser would replace the last person. A trapped souls body went into a coma just like the Egyptian shadow games. Hell or Zorc's dark realm were very specific places related to him or Christian mythology. The shadow realm did help separate and expand the idea of multiple dimensions and in the waking the dragons filler arch it took it one step further. It likely is the most influential arch on future s ties/lore as a result. Until that point, things were still vague on how shadow magic outside Zorc's direct influence came to be and the duel monsters were actually based on Ka. Ka are soul reflections of individuals. They are manifested from Ba or life energy and can only be done as such through Zorc's shadow magic. They are not their own sentient beings but simply an extension of the person they are tied to. The exception are certain divine Ka who are precising spirits that use a vessel to exist on earth. These are mostly the blue eyes white dragon, the Egyptian gods and Zorc himself in the form of Diabound until independence. In the Waking the Dragons arch, the duel dimention was establish d. It's vague enough to be an afterlife realm where the souls of humans take their Ka form regardless but may be something else entirely. Regardless, it added it only another dimension to the earth realm and shadow realm but made it possible to have varying duel spirits of different cultures exist as independent beings. Every since the end of the first series, the Ka explanation has essentially been forgotten for the most part and the duel dimension adopted into the lore. The interesting thing is that there is a relationship. People CAN become duel spirits and duel spirits seem to be created in the realm by duelists. Kaibaman is NOT kaiba but a spirit in his image manifested from his dueling pride. It's very much a tulpa/thought form type thing. It also is obviously simialr to the shadow realm. Zorc was trapped there but the hate and evil of humanity also went there and powered him as a result. It established the main mortal realm as one that emotions were created in and fed out to other dimensions from..with the duel dimension being simply another of these. Instead of evil feelings specifically, the duel dimension seems to be made of the strong emotions felt in competition. If the shadow realm has not been established as such beyond hell or simply a prison where Zorc existedz this kid of lore and later duel spirit stuff wouldn't exist. That's huge considering how much of GX, 5Ds and even later s ties still utilized this.
I mean if it wasn't for *_4K!ds_* we wouldn't have DSOD *_("Dark side of dimensions")_*
The thing about the Shadow realm is that I'd conceptually is WAY WORSE than just dying in a horrific way. Like, getting just straight up sent to hell while still alive seems ways more terrifying that getting your legs cut off.
I just recently read the manga, and I have to say, a lot of the scenes really lacked some of the impact I remembered them having, with people just, you know...dying. Yami Bakuras "death" scene, where he vanishes into the darkness and warns that he IS the darkness (at least that's what he said in the german dub, not sure about the english one) just made so much more sense when he was being sent to the shadow realm instead of...nowhere. And Yami Marik came off as so much more sadistic and malicious in the dub...even though his manga original leaned even heavier into the torture themed monsters. But the fact that he was basically just "playing a bit with his food" before killing them, as opposed to sending them to a realm of never ending torture...yeah, killing them really is the much less threatening option. The shadow realm added a lot to the show, but particularly to its villains and their presentation.
I can't say for sure if "Shadow Game" was ever mentioned in the airing of this show in the philippines way back in the early 2000's but one thing I'm sure of is that we have a better way of dealing with potential killings in this kind of shows advertised for kids. I just wanted to point out that in the philippines at least back in the early 2000's, our country is not to heavy in censorships in tv shows back then so that means I've watched this show and have seen the "Tea and creepy teacher situation, Arcana's buzz saw, Umbra and Lumis bomb duel on top of a glass floor and many more. Instead of saying the words "kill, dead, death etc." We just substitutes the words or phrase like "you're done, you're finish, its the end for you etc.
As an MTG player, I really wish that this was an actual standard for playing tgc's. Taking aside the difficulty of creating something like this that would actually be usable, it would be great to just being able to play on the go like this... Holy S*** did I just begin my midlife crisis at 33?
The shadow realm was a lot more nightmare inducing as a kid looking back.
I Like Both Versions, Personally. The Orignal Version of it just being Hell and then The 4Kids Version of it being "The Shadow Realm".
I wish I have that toy...and someone to play with.
You call it a necessary evil, i call it peak adaptation
Purple Realm. I'm just saying.
It helps that death was present still, even as the consequence of a duel. Like, possessed Joey Vs Yugi kept the whole drowning thing. Kaiba falling was also an instance of possible outright death too. but only the people with magic ties mentioned the shadow realm
no it was NOT necessary as there where other shows on the same network that had people DIE 4kids own TMNT cartoon was full of death and violence
4Kids managed to not only make a fantastic dub but one of the darkest aspect of the show
A friend of mine who got me back into YuGiOh owned the Orichalcos Duel Disk, and i would have loved to have my own duel disk to use so me and him could have recreated Battle City style duels
The shadow realm is cool concept
My twin brother and I each got the original toy and when the dark disk came out I also got it! I wish I never got rid of them but I will say I was the only kid at school with the dark disk and I felt SO FUCKING COOL. What a good time
00:18 You really hit the Nail.... This is why YGO players Cry out to get a New Anime to get excited about the game ... Because the game itself os SUCH TRASH it really Needs suplemental material (the anime) for ideas, characters and an idea of Asthetic that is not just generic knights, lolis and mechas
Shadow realm LITERALLY MAKE SENSE. Like maybe not for the cases of ''dark energy disk'' thing thing in Yugi vs Arcana but we literally see Shadow games in the original, Pegasus stole people's souls, Marik trapped Mai in an hourglass, Yami Bakura disappeared to the darkness and yet ALL of them come back, none of them have actually died. Having one place where all of this happens, where people can be sent after they lose a shadow game in just makes sense and adds consistency.
Yup, we had a pair of the Orichalcos duel disk in our household. We'd constantly have 2 people using them when we played at the house lol
I remember one day we went to Toys R Us and I convinced my Dad to get me the Chaos Duel Disk and a new set of YuGiOh cards. I was the coolest kid on the block until the main series ended and people moved onto PSP's and Nintendo DS's.
"A Necessary Evil" Americans
The Shadow Realm does _kinda_ exist in the japanese version, like you said some Shadow games would send to the "Darkness" (for e.g. Mai and Joey were trapped there after their duels with Marik) while others would just down-right kill you or leave you in a coma. It's not bad that the english dub combined all of that into "the Shadow Realm" (which does sound cooler than just "the Darkness".) but I wouldn't necessarily call it an improvement over the original. It's cool for there to be multiple ways in which a Shadow game can affect people.
Something I found interesting was that the standby phase to activate animation of the Duel Disk was purely an anime thing. In the manga the Duel Disk was always active and we never saw them fold up
What crazy the shadow realm is even more dark then just killing h some one .
Straight to hell card.
4Kids saying injuries send you to the Shadow Realm is just stupid. Even US kids would know better from different sources.
I'd like to think that "sending someone to the Shadow Realm" these days as the anime equivalent of "sending someone to Belize," as Saul Goodman once put it in Breaking Bad
I’ll never forget my dad taking me to Toys R Us as a kid and when I asked him to get me a duel disk he said “I’m not spending money on some big goofy watch, you better pick something else” 💀💀💀💀
I would love to see the Shadow Realm in a re-done version of the show which actually functions in a manner opposite of its original purpose - rather than censoring the show to make it more suitable for kids, Konami should expand on the idea and show us more detailed glimpses into the nightmarish and horrifying purgatory that it is. Seeing as how most of Yu-Gi-Oh's current fanbase is people who grew up watching the series and are now adults, expanding on the terrors that people experience in that realm would be a fun spin on the horror roots of the manga. They shouldn't make it into a seinen series by any means, but keep it in the spirit of the early manga's shonen horror vibe.
interesting concept except Konami chooses to make the target demo of any new Yugioh anime Children. Don't expect that to happen for us older fans, we barely got dark side of dimensions as is.
@BladeMasterIcarus True enough. Still, a man can dream, eh?
They could do something similar to what Digimon did with Ghost Game, which took a more horror based approach while still being a kids show. Stuff like GeGeGe no Kitaro is very popular in Japan.
Not every change 4kids did was bad and this was for sure a great one
It was unnecessary like most of the censorship and changes but this one made sense and bring the mystical elements together in a nice way whike actually helping tension because there’s no way they would kill the main cast but trapping their souls was reversible so it meant they could lose and lose their souls until they were freed
Shadow realm being the lasting cultural impact of the show and pot of greed allowing you to draw 2 cards makes me happy
don't forget trap cards
Without for kids at least in the us anime would not be as popular as it is. Did they make a lot of bad decisions yes. And they made a lot of good stuff as well. The millennium items are way more powerful in the dub then the sub. Being able to turn objects into the shadow realm are way more powerful then not being able to. It makes the millennium items more dangerous then they already are. It makes it to where you don't even have to be in the same room to be sent to the shadow realm or even on the same continent. So the dub millennium items are way more powerful.
A lot of shows took inspiration from the shadow realm
Whatever happened to the shadow realm? Seems like it lasted up until GX.
It lasted as long as any suitable counterpart in the japanese series did. In DM, it was the nameless Collective of Shadows(Iirc, described as a world of shadows, which is probably where 4Kids got the name from) and in GX, it was the World of Darkness that they didn't have to worry about being odd because they cut out ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶s̶t̶ ̶s̶e̶a̶s̶o̶n̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶e̶n̶t̶i̶r̶e̶t̶y̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶M̶a̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶D̶u̶e̶l̶ ̶Y̶u̶-̶g̶i̶-̶o̶h̶ Season 4. In 5DS, the "bad place" being hell is actually plot relevant, so they couldn't just make it into the Shadow Realm, they had to go the Minecraft-route of the Nether. And beyond that, there simply isn't anything that could possibly be made into the Shadow Realm.
Can you make a video why GX and 5ds never got fully translation in English dubbed the missing episodes season four of GX and some episodes of 5ds
*fully translated
The Shadow Realm is way scarier than just saying someone died. People often complain that the dub was overly censored to make it kid-friendly, but growing up in a Baptist Christian household at the time, I didn’t feel that way. Watching a cartoon regularly talk about stealing souls and feeding them to the shadows was anything but “kiddie” to my 11-year-old brain. I thought the show was dark as hell! I don't get how they got away with it
It was certainly a less clumsy effort to censor death compared to Sailor Moon, where people were “kidnapped to the Negaverse.”
Here in Mexico people just died in Sailor Moon we got it uncensored.
So the ShadowRealm is in Sailor Moon as well.
Funny thing, the Sailor Senshi dying at the end of season 1 actually caused a minor controversy in Japan, because so many kids got upset over it they were too sick to go to school, prompting parents to ring up the tv studio to find out if the cast would be alright next week.
Vegeta: “Maybe you won’t be such a disappointment in the Shadow Realm!”
lmao
The idea of the Shadow Realm is much more interesting than characters just plain old dying. With all the other magical stuff going on in the show, the Shadow Realm isn't really out of place. Plus the memes about it are amazing.
Yeah, I think a lot of the magical punishments for the Shadow Games in the manga worked really well, so I feel like the Shadow Realm in the anime dub was kind of the same energy, where there was some added flavor to the stakes of the duels.
I love how 4kids unintentionally made something that stayed in the cultural consciousness. I’ve seen so many memes about this and a ton of athletes reference the shadow realm
Even the name just goes hard. SHADOW REALM.
Hey they finally made a fusion for Red Eyes and Dark Magician! (Red Eyes Dark Dragoon). I used to draw versions of that (and a hypothetical Red Eyes Ultimate Dragon, lol) like 20 years ago. Huh, looks like there's Blue Eyes fusions with the same basic effect as this Dragoon too. Guess they're doing it a bunch. I know you said they were retraining a bunch of OG monsters, but, yeah, wow.
My cousins had these as kids and they pinched their fingers on the opening disk part and they cried so hard their mother threw it away lol
Don’t forget…”Card games on Motorcycles”
