    Now for a financial question. This amp on Reverb and eBay goes for 200.00......I found one with similar issues on the popping and reverb plus a very loud buzzing but I noly paid 100.00 for it. If you did these fixes and took care of the buzzing what would you have charged for the job? Would my 100-200.00 amp now cost me 350 or 400.00? Jusr wondering if it's worth the repair.

    Why all the fuzz with measuring? With the old nut just press down the string to the second fret and see the gap between the string and the first fret wire! After installing the new nut, file down the slot until you reach the same gap between string and first fretwire! As for the radius of the new nut, just hold a strip of sanding paper 240 grid across the first fret space on the fingerboard, instead of sanding the thickness of the nut blank that it fits loose in the nut gap and sand the radius in the slot! So first get the correct radius, then the correct thickness for a snug fit in tge slot, then get the correct width of the nut and finally the correct slots. When the old nut didn't break on removal, you can use it as a template for comparison on every step!

    @SetupMyGuiter (OP) thanks so much for this video. I have the same amp that has an issue with a different jack (the input jack, of all jacks….. of course…) I was hoping you could clarify/answer one question that you briefly touched on in your video. The heat sink bars inside the chassis. As you saw, they have holes drilled through them that line up. Mine doesn’t seem to have any “sticky” stuff, but what I’m wondering is what, if anything, you Andes up doing in regard to the heat sinks that lay on top of each other inside the chassis? Is there some kind of thermal paste I should apply? Bolts to have go through both blocks that line up? Just leave it as is and reassemble with the two parts of the same sized sink lined up? I’m just about finished fixing this, I just wasn’t sure what to do (if anything) when it came to that heat sink that just sort of slides around when you take out the PCB. Thank you so much for your time, help & dedication. I wish you and yours the happiest of holidays!

    • @mikebob7184
      @mikebob7184 Год назад

      You are Right-On about that...! When You gently get to the target depth and all is sized and polished ( Oh yeah, they never talk about "not polishing below the glue line anywhere", this is where You don't want it slippery, the adhesive grips this area ) OK, back to Your subject... File the top of the nut to set the wound strings 1/2 to 2/3 depth, then file down the treble strings to sit 100% in the slot, hit it with 400 600 1,000 and finish with 3,000. There are a couple other critical procedural points that need to be learned also, that never get shown!!!

    Folks don't realize all what goes into making a nut. You did a great job. You have to "sneak" up on it, because if you cut too much, you'll be starting over with a new blank. I have never changed one on an electric. On my acoustic I marked the slots and cut them on the guitar sawing in the direction of each tuner, worked well. Thanks for sharing

  • @deplinenoise

    One tip for a depth stop is to use half a pencil and lay it on the first few frets and draw a line on the nut. Your slots have to end above that line. Good video!

    I'm new to luthiering my guitars. For the nut...should I cut it to a depth a certain distance above the fretboard, or until I have a certain relief above the first fret? What should that distance be and is it dependent on the guitar or neck profile....9" radius, versus 12" radius, versus 16" radius?? Any advise is greatly appreciated and I can't seem to find this stuff in videos nor forum threads!!

    Could you please set the camera on the other side so that your arms don't block the view in future ? - thanks. What happens after glueing the nut in, if you have to remove the nut in a few years ? What type of glue do you use? Is it easy to remove the nut? In this case the nut has been glued to the bottom of the slot. In other luthier videos I have seen the nut tacked on to the fretboard with 2 drops of super glue so that it is easier to remove later, for further adjustment.

    Only read truss rod when neck is at pitch, full tension, using all 4 strings. 3 strings will not give you accurate neck relief reading.

    Which capacitors, or other components can l tamper with to "sweeten" the tone? The brights aren't as blooming, or musical as I would like. I know from experience, that larger, and more primative components have always' made sweeter tones in fender amps. What are my target caps, or resistors on this particular circuit? I know the "tracking", or multiple notes, and brights can be far more mature sounding.

    • @craigschiller5106
      @craigschiller5106 2 года назад

      Depends on what you mean by "sweeten." In your elaboration, it sounds like you want brighter high ends. But many people want that "buttery" tone associated with the Les Paul neck pickup and some recording by Les himself. If you want brighter tone, meaning more treble, you could shift an RC circuit or two to roll over at a higher frequency, meaning a lower value capacitor. Although replacing the electrolytics in the power supply wouldn't be a bad idea, for your purposes I'd start with the main and drive tone circuits: R8/C3 & R32/C21 & C22. You can check sensitivity to each cap by solder tacking a similar value in parallel, which will increase capacitance, and if that produces a big effect, remove the original and replace it with a lower value. You should use similar voltage ratings and type, although some folks decades ago insisted on "orange drops." Polystyrene replacements might deliver the brighter tone you're looking for. Ideally, you could play around with a bunch of dielectric material (the stuff between plates of a cap) to see which has the characteristics you're looking for. By that I mean buy a few different types, swap them in one-at-a-time and decide which you like best (if there's any noticeable difference at all). Also: you may actually get the tone you're looking for by changing the caps associated with the bass tone controls (C4 & C23). Let us know what works! (And be careful in there! Use safe practices when you're working on anything that plugs into line current!)

    • @Mi-cha-el-Edward-Lee
      @Mi-cha-el-Edward-Lee 2 года назад

      Thankyou Greg. If polystyrene are those old medium dark blue ones with the white lettering I used to see in old amps; those, and the paper caps used to sound good. I reckon the size of those components also create a moody playspace for electricity as well. Thankyou for pointing out which specific circuit card correspondence to locate the "possible" targets to beautify the tone. The treble seems a bit crisp; although I do like that there is plenty to spare. I suppose I was thinking more harmonic reactiveness: perhaps a little electrical "sag", and "bloom".

    A coworker just gave me a Memphis like that one. It’s really trashed. The “nut” on it looks like a stick from a tree that has groves. Is there an aftermarket nut that will fit without me having to file? I don’t have tools for that and I have no idea what I’m doing.

    • @grantkoeller8911

      Take bass to professional ,and tell them to replace the nut with real bone. Don't do it yourself unless you are a pro who knows what you are doing. The nut is one of the most important things on a bass. Great care must be taken to ensure it's cut correctly.
