    The opening "bell" motif is another example of Jacob's microtonal explorations. I believe it's roughly based on an equal division of a whole tone into 3 parts. It's not exactly "planar" motion because the chords change voincings. Also, It never gets to the "resolution" note. It's divided into 3 equal parts, but he doesn't play the note that division is heading toward. Also, according to what Jacob said in his Logic session breakdown, the prechorus is based on traditional triadic harmony.

    My favorite performance of Jacob's "Hideaway" was the Paste Magazine studio performance. One of my favorite things about Jacob is how much variety he can pull out of each song. I hope he starts a trend of creating songs in several styles.

    This is interesting from a theoretical perspective but once again I can’t help but feel that Jacob is over complicating a song that is already perfect the way it was written. I truly believe in making a cover your own but he’s barely even paying homage at all to the original. The melody and the bass line are about the only things recognizable and he somehow overcomplicates that too. I kind of sense it’s performed for musicians to dissect so they can praise Jacob Collier rather than for fans of the original artists to appreciate

    At around 20:21 in your analysis, I wonder if these notes capture it: Bb bass note, with Eb, Ab, C, D, F, and then dropping into that wonderful tritone substitution which sounds to me like: E natural bass note, with Eb, Gb, Bb, Db, and F above it. Note the beautiful clash of the F natural over the E natural bass. I love your analysis of his stuff, you have a real skill. Jacob is hard to analyze, because he does not rely on the various musical "stories" (ie: which harmonies lmake a good sequence, such as 3/6/2/5/1). He finds ways to make any two chords follow from each other. Maybe take a listen to ruclips.net/video/4PIMR_oGRcU/видео.html (Jacob with Maro), esp. 5:00 - 5:10 and also especially 7:48 - 7:59. Anyway, please keep up the good work. Subscribed.

    Great lesson. I’ve got such a weird and fickle relationship with JC. While he’s got vibes, theory, and groove, there’s just something missing for me in his songs. This may make me sound like an asshole, but his songs always sound like someone writing songs that has never been through a single bit of problems in his life. No hardship. It all feels to effervescent. It’s like, I feel whatever he’s doing, but I just can’t ever FEEEEEL it, you dig? I want to like him more, but it just feels like trust fund grooves and I hate that I feel that way and also hate it in itself.

      With respect for you point of view, for the life of me I can't understand this oft hear criticism of Collier. In my view the "suffering for your art" is a product of the Romantic period and modern popular culture memes. I also hear the "trust fund" meme quite often. I think his "advantages" growing up were musical ability on another level, not monetary advantages or time and place of birth. I believe that if he was born in the poorest place in the world he would still have risen to the top level of the musical world he was born into and beyond to world level recognition. This has happened in mathematics and other fields. As to a last word on suffering, look at J.S. Bach. He did some nice stuff with out the "suffering" which seems so often required in modern evaluation of a artist's authentic sound. Collier is what he is, and I'm fine with that.

    • @jbardet
      @jbardet 24 дня назад

      Def not a crazy take. but consider his success, and yet he is still humbly living at his family home and spending countless hours surrounded by his instruments. That runs so much deeper than a privileged kid. He's living and breathing his craft and spreading joy. I like him because I am intrigued by greatness and getting my mind blown by the capabilities of a fellow human, especially when they are a good person at the same time.
