Learn to grow carnivorous plants from sundews, to nepenthes pitcher plants, to utricularia and more! My approach is simple. Teach people how to grow carnivorous plants by educating them on critical stages in the growing process, answering their questions timely and effectively, while nurturing a safe and judgement free environment where people can feel comfortable asking as many those questions as they need. No matter if you’re an expert or just starting off in the carnivorous plant hobby, I would love to connect and show you how rewarding growing these plants can be. I have been growing them for several years now and have learned a lot through the bumps and bruises of figuring these plants out with little resources. Information on these plants is scarce at best so I had to learn the hard way through trial and error. My goal with this channel is to fill those information gaps for you so that you will have a much easier time than I did learning how to grow these remarkable plants.

Gatekeepers: Exposing The Ugly Truth About The Carnivorous Plant Hobby!
mines just contracted a few lil flying insects, small like ant size clear wings, easily to crush/ tip of fingers they're very light, but I was wondering do you know what those can be? and why? I had it in a bag for humidity purposes since it's winter here in Southern California, early mid January, but I had opened it up to breathe and noticed those little insects.. thank you in advance !
I have a Nepenthes Ventrata
Hmm interesting. I’m not sure to be honest. Can you tell me a bit more about the insect. It could be a couple different ones but I’m not leaning towards any that can harm the plant. Let me know know a little more about the insect if you don’t mind.
Does it grow slow?
Hey! Yeah it is a pretty slow grower for sure!
This stuff grows wild in my succulent planters. You will have a lot of flower bushes in no time and they seed like crazy.
Yeah they are so fast growing. Mine took a bit to get settled but once it did it took off; especially after I fed it.
The red coloration in the trap looks amazing
It’s crazy too because these are just typicals. I wouldn’t have expected this kind of coloration on them!
My venus fly traps did not go through dormancy for 6 years now, growing strong and healthy. It's super important that it has sufficient light, soil humidity, and mild to warm air. By experience, if this is not provided to a venus fly trap that skipped dormancy, it will suffer much faster than one that has under the same conditions. But no, it doesn't need dormancy if you give it all its needs. I friend has been going at 8 years now without dormancy, and her fly traps are the healthiest I've ever seen. Also, her plant's traps are almost always closed, they are fly monsters! I don't understand why it's a contentious topic though, grow it however you want 😂. I want to see and document how long they will go without dormancy. I absolutely don't recommend this to beginners, as most of the time the exact needs are simply not provided
Great insight!!! It would be interesting to study and see if it is a requirement or something they just do because they have to. I have always been interested in this from dormancy being key to success or do plants use dormancy as more of a defense mechanism to keep from dying.
That VFT is absolutely magnificent! Which cultivar is it?
It may be b52 or g16
That’s the crazy thing. It is a typical that I got from Lowe’s about a year ago. It just has taken off!!
I got it as a tiny typical from the death cubes at Lowe’s about a year ago. It looked nothing like this. Isn’t that crazy that it turned out like this!! None of the others I got did.
@@Carnivorousplanthelp how do you achieve that 🙂↕️
Good video, helpful demonstrations. By the way this propagation method is just called root cuttings.
Thank you for the support and feedback!!!!I hope you are doing well!!
It's on the vft leaf it's so tinyy
That’s right!!! It’s so tiny!!!
Wouldn’t an acaricide be better?
Yeah that would work. A three in one would work as well. Just anything that is organic I like to go with first then go from there.
Hello! Thank you for your video! I’m having the problem with a young Hookeriana, but noticed earlier signs on most of my plants. Thanks for sharing. Did your plant healed? I used an acaricide, it worked well last year on an Ampullaria. Definitely don’t want to lose my collection. Would you prune the dead leaves? Also, do you think a repot is needed? Why is that?
Hey! Yes they healed up nicely!! I would prune the dead leaves for sure. The mold is usually due to a lack of airflow or not enough airflow. The dead leaves can prevent air from circulating around the base of the plant. If the mold got down into the media, I would do a repot to be on the safe side. Just be careful with the roots, they are very thin. I hope this helps and keep me posted!!
Thank you for the information on my Nepenthes!
@@ToddsC-G you are very welcome!!
I can’t find the comment asking about the yellowing on the seedlings. Providing some extra light without the heat will help with that for sure. I also noticed that some crosses just have a more yellowing look.
Man! I love nepenthes, I’m just too lazy to grow them!😂
Hey!! They are amazing plants but they can be grumpy for sure lol!!
Hello Bro Nice Plants Im Also A Nephenthes Cultivator And I Wanted To Know How To Encourage The Growth Of New Lower Pitcher In A Vine Withouth Cutting In The Vine God Bless My Brother❤❤✝✝
Hey!! God bless you as well! The vine will focus it energy on the basal or the newer growth. The main vine will slow a bit or even stall out. It will take the basal a bit to grow before it pitchers. Some hybrids/ species defer with this. Once it gets some good growth going you will start to get baby pitchers. You can add osmocote pellets to the larger pitchers on the main vine. That will give the plant more energy to focus on pitcher production. It won’t take much. Just one pellet to give it a boost. Or you can use insects for a more natural approach.

hey, i have two like this :0 but one of them doesn't look so good and i'm afraid it might die :")
I am sorry to hear that. What is going on with the other one? I might be able to help.
How can I give my pitchers calmag, roots or pitches
I would use osmocote pellets and drop them directly into the pitchers. You can also use highly diluted maxsea and spray inside the pitchers or on the leaves. Never fertilize the roots. Let me know if you have any questions!!
Wow
They are amazing plants and amazing at catching insects!!
Beautiful sundews too!! Amazing
Thank you!!! They are magnificent plants!!
great video~very usefull. thank you bro,i have a grow tent too,but not like yours, the humidity is always nearly 100%,i don't know it's good or bad...
Hey!! Thank you! That is a great humidity! Just make sure to have to airflow and you will be all set!!
Hi sir.. I have my Drocera Capensis and Filiformis in a Bog pot and it is infected by spider mites / mealybugs.. So couldn't apply neem oil, any suggestions would be helpful. My Capensis especially trying to flower multiple times but failing because of the bugs they are eating them away.
Sorry to hear that you are going through that. You can use a miticide or a 3 in 1. I have a video on how to apply to the infected area. It can be frustrating but it is fixable. Carnivero has a great list of products that won’t harm your plant. They don’t sell them but they describe what to get and how it works.
Hello, new subscriber. I recently purchased a spooned leafed sundew from joles carnivorous plants. Ive had the sundew for about a week and it’s green. I’ve done everything by the instructions. I have it sitting on sunny days in a south facing very sunny window. It being winter we only have about 10 hours of light. We’ve had some dreary rainy days so I purchased a 11 watt grow light bulb for the sundew. I fear that’s not enough light. Can you recommend a grow light bulb that’s better? I have seen the feit ones at Home Depot. Would those work? What watt should I buy?
Hey! Thank you for subscribing!!! It can take a while for them to get their dew back and to color up after the stress of shipping. More than likely it is just acclimating. In regards to lights, look for PPFD. In short that is how much light that gets to the plant. Most grow lights will have that listed. I use Fecida lights that I get off of Amazon. They are very good lights and very affordable. I have used them for years and have had no issues. They are very bright and are adjustable.
@ Thank You for answering. How much PPFD does a spoon leafed sundew need? I want to purchase the right bulb. Is my bright south sunny window enough to sustain the sundew on dreary days?
They can go as low as 90 but as high as a few hundred. I wouldn’t go any lower than 90 though for the bottom range.
@@Carnivorousplanthelp Thank you for your reply. I will look into getting a bulb in that range
Of course! I am happy to help! Let me know if you have any questions along the way!!
how does one go about feeding the seedlings??
Hey! A heavily diluted Maxsea works well. You just have to be careful and watch as algae to overrun them. For the most part, young seedlings don’t need to be fed. They will eat off of fungus gnat, nematodes, etc.
16 hours of light? The max daylight length in S. Africa is only 13 hours and that is in January only.
Hey! That’s under grow lights. I probably should have specified that. Out in nature they can just be on the photoperiod that Mother Nature gives them. Even the best lights with the highest PPFD are no match for Mother Nature. They can handle less for sure but I have had them on a 16 hour photoperiod for the ones inside and they love it. However they will always do better outside in my experience. Good insight on the photoperiod.
@@Carnivorousplanthelp thank you this also answers a question I had about my sundew in a south bright sunny window. My window gets about 8 hours of sunlight. This is a relief to know that’s enough light daily.
Great useful vlog 👍, UK based 🏴, my collection is in a wooden shed, gets light when it's light, can't do any more 🤷, mild weather at the moment colder coming in 🥶, great channel 👌
Thank you for the support and kind words!! They might go to sleep for a bit during the colder weather and shorter photoperiod but will make a nice recovery in spring for sure!!
All my sundews died. Cephalotus, Utricularia, nepenthes, sarracenia, flytraps, fig, and jacaranda all doing well. Those sundews though…maybe it was my lighting schedule? I have my lights on at 04:30 and off at sunset. My plants in tent never receive less than 12 hours. Definitely started getting less than 16 as winter came in. Maybe that was it? Water, temp, humidity, and substrate were nominal. Definitely puzzling and something I need to figure out in the spring when I try again.
Hey! Interesting and I’m sorry to hear that. What kind of sundews were they? They could have went dormant. Also, how did they look before dying off? Do you still have them?!
@@Carnivorousplanthelp Two species. Capensis and the other a rosette-type I assume maybe to have been Capillaris. They were both garden center rescues sold as generic sundew. Had them both about eight months. Tossed them about two weeks ago. If you're still interested in a whodunit in spite of the plants being gone already: The two Capensis had normal growth, then suddenly new growth stopped. No environmental changes other than English ivy on the opposite corner and a Jacaranda tree seedling that sprouted. Anyway, mature leaves went through their life cycle with dew; once they died new growth started but the leaves were small and underdeveloped. After about five leaves, the new growth stopped and it crashed out in spite of anything. In the end they were black throughout like an old flytrap leaf. The rosette type did much the same except it appeared elongated in between growth stops, as if it wasn't getting enough light. Same end. I check the PPFD of my lights with Photone & a cosine corrector every so often. Perhaps too much. Haha. Obviously more-so when I notice issues. The light levels didn't change. I did, in fact, increase it's light, but it had no effect obviously. No discoloration on the leaves, oddly. The only pests I've ever had in the tent were spider mites on that English ivy that I noticed a week ago. Removed the ivy and haven't noticed any mites on anything else. I mean you would think I was trying to telepathically communicate with the plants with how I was staring them down looking for mites or any signs. Though I keep the tent at 65-85% RH, not sure how well those mites were doing in that sort of humidity. The only other two issues I'm having are my sphagnum tray turning white but it's not drying out. I thought that was too much direct light bleaching it out, but perhaps it's fungal and related? One of my Nepenthes is having what I believed to be Edema from a poor watering schedule. That seems to have slowed and stopped creeping up the plant as I've widened the watering schedule. Now though, I'm asking if this could all be fungal and related as well. It doesn't appear to be rust but I'm only 8 months deep into caring for plants in general, so what do I know. You know?
Hmmm. My first thought is maybe root mites if you bought them from a box store. That is a known issue with the ones purchased from those places. Was there little white spots on the roots if you can remember? I guess it is a moot point but trying to see if I can diagnose it for you just in case you decide to grow more. I hope that you do. A lot of those box store ones are very fragile and don’t make it.
@@Carnivorousplanthelp I didn't know these root mites or aphids even existed to check at the time. That being said, I re-purposed one pot and soil to start another Utricularia colony. Just checked down about an inch but didn't see any signs. Though it's been two weeks since their main colony would have been tossed out. I'm not sure if that's a factor. I'll still keep an eye on the rest of my plants though. If anything similar comes up on the others, now I'll be checking the roots for anything like that. I have to agree with you on the box store plants. They are rough in comparison to the plants I've received from decent growers. I knew they would be but being so far in, I thought they'd make it. No, this hasn't dissuaded me from growing more. I have Filaformis seeds I'm finally getting around trying to stratify outside right now. I'll get the hang of Sundews somehow; for starters probably go with a better seller next time for my 'anchor' plants. lmao. I look at it as half hobby, half conservation. I lose a plant and I'm legit bummed out. Trying to make sure it never happens again rather than give up.
we eat it, we die right :)?
I don’t know if it would kill but I would test it lol
Hello. I’m curious should I change the conditions in my grow tent to match nepenthes environment during winter? I know they don’t go dormant, but they do experience a winter. I have a seedling heating mat in my grow tent that brings the temperature up to around 80°. Should I gradually shut off that heating mat my house temperature is around 72°. But I do have freshly cut, potted basals. I don’t wanna throw things off too much, but I was thinking I should match their natural dormancy-like environment from where they come from.
Hey! Great question! I would say that you are fine with keeping the temps and settings the same. I haven’t adjusted the plants and they do just fine. They will all slow a little in their growth for sure though. I would say there is a greater risk to the seedlings if you don’t have the mat on. I would keep them going as you have them. The only big thing is that they like to be a bit dryer during this time a year.
thanks for your share Bro , i from Belgium , my English not the best 🤫 but now ; i have been go on with carnivore plants mostly because i use them to control pest on my orchids or other aroids in my collection i have breed since Covid 😅 yes , fever didn't spare me 🤣 and since than , gosh i get crazy building a inside jungle and hahahahaha spend lot of money for certain plants , orchids , but than came the phyllo's ands the Anthuriums and you know how massive they can be , en yes you want them all 🤣 and than you need more space and condition to shine there health , humidity level control air flow etc , and yes i have a lot of carnivores as well and i found them very tricky for me to bring them in beautiful condition or even to survive , most species have dying , as the 4 of 5 dow drosera kind , on i liked much was from Madagascar where my wife is from and my daughter that Belgium wouldn't recognized , but this is a other story , but just wanted to say thanks and that i enjoyed your videos ,;-) wish you to enjoy Christmas and have good new year there ,greets Carl
Thank you! That is very kind of you for the well wishes! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas as well! Yes the plant hobby is very addicting!! The anthuriums will cost a lot and do get massive for sure!!! It amazes me how hard it is to recreate what nature does so effortlessly. The droseras are great with controlling pests for sure and make a great addition! Let me know if you have questions about the carnivorous plants and which is best etc. I am always here to help!!
Aphids have been my most difficult pest indoors because they sneak up when your eye is not constantly on the plants. I have some orchids on a shelf that is not in my direct line of sight and the nasty little things have done a lot of damage before I get a chance to treat the plant. I know eventually the damage grows out but is unsightly in the meantime. Thank you for an informative video and I wish you all the best for the holiday season.
Thank you for this informative video. I just received a free Drosera Binata with my recent order and didn't think it was going to survive. It's just sprouting two new growths so when my plant is large enough I'll try the leaf cuttings. Can't wait!
Thank you!!! That is awesome to hear! Yes they are very hardy plants. Let me know if you have any questions! I am always a resource!
Makes me want to take up nepenthes again!🤣
lol, they are lovely but fussy plants.
My drosera has thrown up a ton of flowers that are starting to dry up. Any thoughts on best practice to grow from them? Is it possible?
Hey! Depending on the sundew. If it’s a Spathulata or Capensis you will have a ton of seeds. If it is a Binata there is a good chance it is sterile. What type of sundew is it and then I can help you on how to germinate?
@@Carnivorousplanthelp capensis
@ I have a capensis
I don’t go onto many forums, but it is sad that folks would discourage anyone from growing CP’s. The more people growing them, the better for protecting the different species. I love sharing what little knowledge I have & have learned so much from growers far more advanced than me!
Yeah it is very sad but that is what got me to start Carnivorous Plant Help for Beginners on Facebook. It is a group that is dedicated to teaching people about these amazing plants while ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and dignity. I think it has made a huge difference and I hope that I can continue to grow it out. My goal is to have carnivorous plants be in the same conversation as all of the other non carnivorous houseplants. I want as many people as possible to grow them and grow them responsibly!
By the way, do plants out of tissue culture take longer to acclimate ? I have a highland hybrid with nepenthes villosa and lowii in it. I bought it from , Plants that eat. I have it in highland conditions in a tank.
Umm sometimes but that is more contingent on if they harden the plant off before selling it and the hybrid/species of the plant. Some will take longer to acclimate
@@Carnivorousplanthelp Thank you
do you have sacerriana :)?
Hey! Yes I have a few! I love them!!

I'm new to carnivorous plants. I bought a few traps from a big box retailer. They were in rough shape, but have perked up under my care. It's winter in NY now. I skipped dormancy this time just to give it some time to get better. But I do plan on going through its dormant cycles next season. Hopefully this isn't counterintuitive.
Hey!! That’s great news!! Yeah I skipped dormancy their first year of me owning them too! Let me know what questions you have. I am here to support!

Thank you!! I think that might be a rumor. I know several people that have successfully crossed Miranda. It might be certain clones that are sterile .
