Basics I Don't Own | deinfluencing you from "must have" clothing pieces
As fall begins and we start to think about styling autumn outfits, it can be tempting to "fill our wardrobe gaps" with all the "basics" we can think of. But there's really no such thing as a must-have clothing piece. If a basic doesn't align with your personal style, you don't need to buy it! YOUR "basics" and wardrobe staples don't have to be basic. In this vid I chat about all the "must-have basics" that I don't own, and why.

Trying to Style Skinny Jeans in 2024

Skinny jeans are back??? We've all heard the rumblings. Is this 2010s trend ready to make an appearance in fall 2024 fashion, or is it just too soon? Personally, I think a more straight-leg, true crisp denim jean can be very cutesy very mindful very demure. That being said, a jegging??? I fear we will never be ready. In this vid I try to style fall outfits using both. Let me know where you stan...

    I’m a vegan of 13 years who still buys second hand wool, leather, down, and silk. I don’t know if I’m still allowed to call myself a vegan, but for 13 years I’ve never eaten an animal product (to my knowledge), adopted all of my animal companions instead of buying from breeders, volunteered for cat rescues/shelters, used cruelty free/vegan beauty and household products, and abstained from zoos, aquariums, and other animal entertainment. But I genuinely believe more harm is done to animals and the planet by buying most vegan leathers (though the plant leathers are getting much better) and polyester clothes/furniture, as well as trashing the existing leather, fur, feathers, and wool. I’ve been called out for being a hypocrite (mostly by non vegans actually) but I can reconcile it in my brain very easily. Reduction in harm is always the goal. (As an aside I never understood why vegetarians were supposed to be the enemy.) And along those lines, while I tend not to buy fast fashion now that I have the means to go sustainable for new clothes, I do have pieces from Banana Republic, Gap, and Nordstrom Rack that I have held onto since 2016-2018 era. If you can make a fast fashion piece last for 6-8 years or more in your closet that is inherently more sustainable than the slow fashion piece that was decluttered after a year or two.

    I don't like the concept of basics in general. It mainly stands for boring pieces in boring colours. I prefer statement pieces and will wear a patterned dress over a frilly blouse with neon coloured tights and plarform boots. Most "styling experts" will say that you need to build an outfit around a central piece, using basics to emphasize that single element of an outfit. But I look at that and I disagree. That's just the easy way out in my opinion and there is no fun in that at all. Of course it does work for many people, which is awesome, but that doesn't mean we have to sign it into law.

    • @katpat-rice
      @katpat-rice 14 часов назад

      i think that really is the point of basics though, they are an “easy way out”. if you’re in a rush or uncreative or just want to easily look put together, that’s where basics come in.

    Hey I just have to say I appreciate your videos so much! I love putting on RUclips or a show while I do my makeup or paint etc, but influencer videos or fake feeling content has been super tiring to me. I appreciate so much that you just talk about what you love, and I can tell, are doing it for fun and because you genuinely love these things. Your videos are so relatable to real life, and that is refreshing. The text you put in at the beginning is relatable to all of us, and that’s another reason I love this. Never feel like you need to post something you’re uncomfortable with, but it’s so nice to watch something that feels real again! Your video on wardrobe gaps made me have a different view on my own wardrobe, and has helped me feel like I don’t need to buy things everyone else has, but just what I love. Anyways, thanks for making such cute fun videos! This makes youtube a fun place again!

    It's so bizarre to me that somebody doesn't own those things, i don't even think about them, they always kind of existed in my wardrobe (no judgement whatsoever it's just surprising af). Out of the things mentioned i have several items of the said type (probably 5 pencil skirts, like 3 black turtlenecks for different temperatures, and an unspecified number of blazers etc). What I don't own are white tops (one tailored shirt for very formal occasions does it for me), bras (sports tops for me), leggings (i do own them but they are my home clothes due to their falling out of fashion) and probably Mary Janes (always wanted them, never found THE ONES i could buy/would fit me)

  • @CatEyedFancy
    @CatEyedFancy 3 дня назад

    YES. I don't own a lot of the standard "basics" because I have closely evaluated my closet and style and realized I don't need them. I bought my first blazer not long ago because I now work a director level position (but even then we are an 'office casual' dress code). I picked one in a color that really suits me, not the basic black, gray or navy. I like it with my work wardrobe but if I wasn't in the kind of position I'm in, I never would have bought it. I don't own many solid black items - black actually is a harsh color on most people but we are just taught it's a necessary basic. It also shows every bit of pet hair and lint badly. I do have a black dress that I love and a high quality material black fitted t shirt that I use to layer with, but when I wear these I usually layer them with other clothes or jewelry in colors that match my complexion better. White? We don't own white in this household. I don't wash clothes with bleach so it's way too hard to keep looking clean and white. I also don't own heels of any kind. They are bad for your feet, knees and body alignment in general so I don't care how good I think they look, I won't wear them nor any other kind of uncomfortable shoe.

  • @razzledazzleboomerz
    @razzledazzleboomerz 3 дня назад

    I completely relate to never owning/will never own blazers & pleated skirts. For me, I probably will never own white jeans, white overalls, trench coats (I don't live in the city), any mini skirt (I only own all maxi's...only short skirt I may consider is knee-length, but it can't be between knee and ankle. I hate those), any knee-high boot (unless it's specific for gardening or winter- not the trendy, stylish kind like Frye boots). I know this isn't a basic, but, will never own a Chanel, Dior, YSL, LV bag/anything because not into those luxurious brands. I just bought a 3.5 inch high heel that's block and has an ankle strap, otherwise, I will never buy a heel higher than a kitten heel unless it's a block. I also don't love turtlenecks on me which sucks because I love them, but I have a short neck, so I look like The Rock with them. I doubt I'd own cowboy boots. Love the fashion involved but I don't see a need to purchase cowboy hat and make an outfit since I don't live in a country/southern state and good quality ones are really expensive. I wouldn't wear it too often, so I probably wouldn't purchase. Last big thing is, since I don't work in corporate, I don't like trousers/pleated trousers. They're so chic, but not for me. I bought one pair at H&M when I was younger and never wore them afterwards. For some reason, as constricting as jeans can be, the trouser just feels too fancy for me, even if I wore them casually with a t-shirt, just not my thing. This goes also for any pants that end awkwardly above the ankle and aren't flowy. I know capris are in now and I see models wear them. I don't know/think I'll buy them. I like how it looks on other people, but I don't know if I'd like it in me more than just a trend. I don't like lace much either. Oh! One I MUST mention- the form fitting grandma cardigans everyone wears- I don't think I'll own one, never really liked the look on me. I've been debating buying a gray one, but I haven't been able to pull the trigger because I don't know if it's actually growing on me or not. We're seeing them in all colors but not a fan of them

I wish I’d always thought of it this way It’s also cultural, my country is more informal than the US so blazers are very business, very formal, or part of a specific style. In most offices blazers aren’t a basic but jeans are. Most men have one (only one) for very formal events but most women don’t need any! I think for bras maybe go to a mom and pop lingerie shop and get professionally fitted? I found my perfect bras by trying on every option at Victoria secret. I agree on the black and white. Those are from the winter palette and I’m warm and soft so I don’t own much in true black or true white. I really liked this, and I definitely feel the same. Things that are "basics" that I don't own? As a dresses and skirts girl, I don't own any jeans, and am perfectly fine with it. I like pants, but mine are all trousers on the baggier side, maybe pleated, or sweat pants. Ballet flats, whether they are in or out of style I kind of have always hated them and they look terrible on me. And yeah, a blazer. I'm just not a blazer person. I love an oversized look, but I want it slouchy and cozy. I love like a men's tailored shirt as an oversized "menswear" item, but a blazer is just never looking good on me. I spent aaaaaages looking for bras to replace some Victoria's secret ones because the ones I bought in 2012 fit well, but they died after 10 years. And none of the ones I tried at any store I went into fit. I gave up and just bought soft cup longline bras from target, which are way comfy but don't hold the girls up. ThirdLove supposedly makes good ones of the kind you describe. I eventually found a high end french brand that I adore and have 10 wired contour ones that fit fabulously. So I would say something about how brands are run makes the bras not fit. I shopped for 5 years without success.

    I feel like our eye is so trained to focus on proportions and I feel like skinny jeans just give absolutely no shape. I liked them with the boots but the brown pants were def better lol! The brown jeans in the boots just worked better to our newly trained eyes. Idk if that makes sense.

    This confirms my feeling that anything can look good on someone young and attractive. That’s how designers get away with promoting horrendous ideas.
