Texas Sandhill Crane Hunt

This hunt was a last minute decision based off birds feeding in a nearby field . We took the Momarsh Invisaman blinds and a dozen DiveBomb decoys and gave it a shot. Justin was clutch and knocked down two while I managed to come out with a torn rotator cuff. It was a great time and I enjoyed the experience.

Here is my review of the new Avian-X HDR Turkey Decoys - Jake & Hen - . These are awesome decoys with great attention to detail and even come with interchangeable heads to show an aggressive and non aggressive posture. These are some of the best decoys I have ever seen and I know they are going to tip the scales in my favor once a big old Tom gets one look at them.

    Ideally you should have 100 pellets in a 30" circle. 1.25 oz. #2 steel only has 157 pellets to start with. My bet is that you can't achieve that goal at 50 yds and possibly not 35 yds with chokes and loads you are using. My first suggestion is that you should correct your point-of-aim problem with shims or other adjustments if possible. Attempting to make corrections while shooting at game will never be consistent. Second suggestion is you use 1.25 oz #5 bismuth which has around 240 pellets. This will allow you to exceed the 100 pellets in the circle and still have enough knockdown power to kill out to 50 yds, if you can consistently shoot that far (I can't). Thanks for producing the video.

    Good video No reason to apologize for patterning at your chosen yardage. I didn’t like some of the holes with either choke and was fascinated by the comments regarding why they were high. I shoot goose between 25-35 yards mostly ( ducks too) over water and and am trying new combos with my A400 Just ordered some Boss #2 and will pattern them .

    I just bought one and hate it. It’s to short and it leans back so far it’s like laying down. I bought it to watch the Grandson’s football games and hate the seating position for games. It’s probably fine if your drinking beer and spiking a cigar. Other than that, I hate it and wish I had my money back.

    I thought the reason you cant use a factory full choke is due too the constriction with steel is being done in the barrel. An after market extended choke its being done with stronger steel outside of the barrel. I may be wrong but its what I have always heard.

    • @68wildside
      @68wildside 9 месяцев назад

      The factory chokes are labeled after leadshot patterns and are too tight for steel shot. For example, kicks chokes are labeled after steel load patterns, resulting that kicks full has less constriction than factory full.

    Measure the height of your rib to the top of the barrel at the back of the gun after the taper of the barrel, then measure the height of the rib near the front bead. The front should be lower which means your line of sight of your aim is pointed downward from the line of sight of your barrel. The further you get out, the higher your shot placement will be…until gravity takes effect at a certain distance. That’s why your 35 was higher than your 25, gravity hadn’t taken effect yet. Your gun is doing exactly what it’s suppose to do. When you decoy ducks, shoot at their feet. It’s designed to shoot at objects without covering up the target with your sight, which is what people in your comments are calling “float”. Most semi-autos use the same euro style aiming. Next time you’re at the gun store, check out the difference in the rib height from front to back of the barrel and you’ll notice most are lower in the front. I’m a big Benelli guy and I think they only have one semi auto with pure line of site where both rib height and barrel are parallel to each other…I think it was the M2. If you’re Photoshop or Illustrator guy, draw a line from centerline of the barrel and a line from the rib and you’ll see where they cross paths. I did that with my SBE 3 in scale to see where it was at 20-70 yards. If you call the manufacture, at least with Benelli, they will describe how the aim works, however, very few avid hunters notice the rib height difference and complain their gun shoots high, which it’s designed to do. Great video and hope this helps with your aim.

    Great video! I have the same shotgun and have been using aftermarket chokes for steel shells. The one I use the most is the Patternmaster classic duck. Last year I decided to try the Boss Bismuth just like you're using. I patterned them at 40 yards and found that they hit high as well but I also patterned the factory chokes as well. The factory chokes in my A400 patterned very well, not high, more centered and even. The modified was wider and the full was tighter as you would expect. Thanks again for your video and Great hunting!

  • @jrow84

    Please be careful changing the fit based off of bench shooting(unless that's how you hunt). On the bench when you just want accuracy, you should be able to achieve the proper sight picture regardless of fit. Someone else mentioned to shoot free hand, mimicking a hunting situation as nearly as possible, best way to do it.

    • @g7outdoors497
      @g7outdoors497 2 года назад

      Appreciate the suggestion and I don't completely disagree with it.. The rest is purely for consistent results on the pattern itself. Shooting freehand allows for inconsistency in an evaluation like this as I am looking at the pattern itself. If I pull the shot I am not going to get a true result on how the pattern performs . Mimicking the "hunting" situation when patterning in my opinion tells you nothing on how the combination truly patterns...... Let me explain my thought process, its like trying to Zero in your rifle from freehand standing, You don't start with that, you start from the bench and zero it in, doing this tells you where your true point of impact is and then you can go and practice in a hunting situation such as standing freehand. The rifle is zeroed and if your off the mark then its shooter error. ( Yes, I know shotguns and rifles are different animals ) When I pattern the shotgun from a consistent rest I can see if my pattern is shooting high, to the left, low or to the right. Once I know that I can now go into a hunt/shooting situation and know where my true point of impact is and adjust my hold accordingly to be successful. Everyone has their own opinion and way of doing things and I do appreciate your suggestions. Hope you have a great day

  • @TommyboyGTP

    Do the same exact test but try different shells and see how that goes. I'm thinking it's more of an ammunition thing than the chokes with patterning.
