Hotkeys Portugal
We are Jane and Phil, and in 2023 we bought a long-abandoned small farm in central Portugal.
Both of us are into DIY, gardening, cooking, and renovation. We are breathing new life into the farm, to create a sustainable and healthy home. As Brits living part-time in Europe after Brexit, we are adapting to life in Portugal whilst also keeping a home in the UK.
Both in our 60s, pushing against the idea of retirement whilst managing health and fitness through an active lifestyle, creative projects, and continuous learning.
The renovation project will rebuild the old stone house, a second tiny house, and two barns in 8,000 m2 of sloping woodland. We hope to combine our experience with DIY tools and techniques with local methods and materials alongside technically smart solutions to sit comfortably within the Portuguese architecture and environment. That means off-grid where possible with solar power, water recovery, and high-speed internet to allow us to keep our freelance work going.

KITCHEN ROOF at last - renovation of ABANDONED FARM - EP53
At last, we have a proper kitchen roof on the outdoor catering centre of our renovation project in central Portugal. It is a transformation of the abandoned farm site from tumbledown buildings covered in vegetation, via a camp-style temporary cover, to a proper structure covering the counter-top, sink and electrical sockets. It took us a year, but we are only in Portugal part-time, and it was well worth the effort.
In this episode, we pass a big milestone in our renovation project, and do it in our typical style - optimistic, having a go, a bit trial-and-error with a few embarrassing mistakes thrown in - as we challenge ourselves to learn, enjoy and grow older with a smile.

Ruined house renovation - HARD SUMS for kitchen roof rafters in Portugal - EP52
День назад
The kitchen roof goes a step further at our ruined house renovation in Portugal. This week Phil makes the structure more robust to survive Portuguese rain and wind and then adds the rafters. This is more challenging than expected when we have to calculate dimensions and spaces on top of a roof. Lots of hard sums, and all our engineering and maths qualifications are lost in a flurry of mental an...
Turning the corner - renovating Portugal abandoned house kitchen roof EP51
After all the dismantling, we turn the corner to build a proper roof to protect the outdoor kitchen, the only catering facility at our abandoned house renovation project in central Portugal. This has become the centre of the site and so, before it faces another winter, we must give it the protection it needs. This structure is intended to last for many years, as a remedy to the multiple tempora...

This week we dismantle the outdoor kitchen roof at our old farm renovation in central Portugal - again - but this time with a clear plan for the finished article All the materials have arrived, at last, so we can go back to the plan and remove the temporary structure ready to rebuild as we really want it. #portugalrenovation #ruinedfarm #abandonedhouse #diycouple #olivetree There is also a lot ...
Portugal renovation part-time - resetting priorities - EP49
We are back at our old house renovation project in Portugal after a short break. The part-time approach enforced by Brexit visa rules means we must reset each time we return. New trip, new enthusiasm, and the list of jobs is longer than ever. Everything has grown, but it's great to be out in shorts at this time of year and getting back to rebuilding our abandoned off-grid farm. The big question...
ONE YEAR to build a roof - almost! Couple renovate ruined farm in Portugal EP48
In this video, we’ll focus on the outdoor kitchen as we renovate our ruined farm in central Portugal. We go back to the first days to see where we have come from with a short timelapse of one year's work so far. Then, we build on last week's work to raise part of the frame, add a temporary section, and cover it with OSB and waterproof membrane. This is the driest and most structurally sound roo...
Adapting to AUTUMN IN PORTUGAL on leaky ruined farm - EP47
The rain sets in at our leaky ruined farm, but work continues as we renovate our abandoned homestead in central Portugal. This week we learn to live with some scavengers in our kitchen store room, and work around the limitations of solar power on stormy days. A highlight is a day out in Coimbra with friends Geoff and Lesley, still around after the exertions of last week, who make excellent tour...
KITCHEN TEAMWORK - friends lay outdoor kitchen gravel floor in abandoned farm - EP46
The outdoor kitchen floor project gets a boost as we team up and welcome friends from London to help us renovate our abandoned farm in Portugal. Geoff and Lesley kindly broke into their holiday to help us out, and we had a blast preparing the timbers, levelling the sub-floor, and laying the gravel base. Phil and Geoff go back 25 years through work, living in the same London neighbourhood, and a...
Kitchen floor problem - couple renovate abandoned house in Portugal - EP45

Lots of digging at our abandoned house this week as we make the outdoor kitchen floor lower and level, and respond to an unexpected failure of the canopy roof. This is our project to renovate an abandoned stone farm house in Portugal and turn it into a dream home, future-ready and sustainable with off-grid power, heating and water recovery. #outdoorkitchen #abandonedhouse #stonehouse #ruinedfar...
Why choose Portugal? Ruined house renovation Q&A - EP44
We celebrate one year since we first saw our ruined house in central Portugal and started the renovation project. We've had many questions, like: Why choose Portugal? Has Jane done voiceover work? What will we build? Will we do the work ourselves? Why did we connect to mains water? Do we stay at the farm in the winter? Will we move to Portugal full-time? #oldhouserenovation #movingtoportugal #r...
Outdoor kitchen hot water at ruined house renovation EP43
The outdoor kitchen at our ruined farm renovation project gets another upgrade with the addition of hot water - that's great news because nobody likes washing up or showering in cold water, even on hot summer days. Jane revisits the well to remove more unwanted greenery and Phil resumes building the bedhead having been interrupted by the fire alarms last week. #renovationprojects #portugal #hou...
Portugal abandoned house renovation - nearby fires but safe - EP42
A normal week gets turned upside down, but don't worry, we are safe and the risk has gone right back down. We see the fabulous Bombeiros dealing with big fires around the country, and a couple of times get a bit closer to us than we would like. The community pulls together and our thoughts are with those further north still at risk or impacted by last week's events. In other news, Phil gets sta...

toujours un plaisir de regarder vos partages
merci pour ce partage 👍👍
❤
😎
Looking really good!
Thanks Geoff, and the gravel is doing a great job too after all that hard work.💪😎
A fine outcome, Ann and Phil.
Sorry, Jane.
Thanks a lot, Jean. Your support is much appreciated 😎
Hola Jane & Phil, great video as always. Jane i think I'd rather tackle the roof than all that digging. Superwoman !!!! Hugs ❤
You're very kind, Patricia. I prefer to keep my feet on solid ground - never did have a head for heights💚
I think you are over worrying about how things look as you say it’s not permanent as someone else said I reckon that roof would withstand a typhoon but you will still get wet bless you
Thanks for your concern, Sylvia. Phil's been using this as practice for future projects - figuring out the best way to do things, so it's better to be safe than sorry! If we ever got a typhoon, we'll be hiding away in the tiny house for sure😂💨💨
You will probably need a drain between the patio and lawn to stop the patio flooding when it rains.
We certainly will, and it's already on the future projects list. We've experienced the monsoon-like nature of Portuguese rain on more than one occasion☔️☔️☔️
Gostei, muito bem feito. Matemáticamente perfeito e bonito. Abraços Phil e Jane.❤❤
Obrigada.
that is pretty amazing ! mistakes are not mistakes they are learning experiances :)
That's what we keep telling ourselves. We've had a whole lot of learning recently😉
Great job Phil and Jane, nice video.
Thank you so much Larry, it’s taken its time but it’s hard to keep pace when juggling partial presence and local material availability. 👍😎🛠️🇵🇹
Fantastic tidy Workmanship 👍 Phil & Janey keep on digging doing a fine job 😀
Thanks, Gordon. I'm sure there will be plenty more digging over the coming year, but hopefully with mechanical assistance once we get to start on the main rebuild.🚜
Finally!
It does tend to take us a while, but we get there....eventually😂
What kind of wood protector are you using
The protector I’ve used here is called Cupigrou and is the main stuff available in our local hardware store. I’ve also used something called Xylophene but it really is down to which store I’m in. Hope that helps.
Oops - wrong language, I think...Is this better?
I think stumpy is on its way out. If the growth is soft, it might be some kind of oyster mushroom. If hard, it is a bracket. Both feeding on dying trees
Oh no, I hope not! I'll give it a good feed in the spring and keep my fingers crossed. Even though it is a bit close to the orange tree, we've become quite attached to it since its remarkable recovery.
Well done - great video - thanks
Very kind of you to say so, thanks a lot ❤️🛠️😎
Fantastic job
Thank you so much 😀
great job guys,well done.
Thank you so much 😀
Looks good. Free math's lessons if you want
I’m counting the days until we can, oh no, that means more numbers 🤕🔢
the small ladder is wobbly as heck, watch out. and relax, work is only something we do to pass the time between breaks... 😜😂 stay strong 🤠😎
Spot on - that concrete slab I was on is a bit uneven - took a few days before I worked it out and got around to putting some wedges under one. leg to steady the ladder. Tea breaks don't get filmed, but they are many and very welcome!☕️🛌😎
c'mon, mate! it's a 2 shingles roof... for a kitchen! hoy! chop chop with the diggin'! we don't have all day! 😜😂😂 a famous restaurant in portugal started like that, btw... still operating, shingles gone because of new code, but costumers still pass through the kitchen to get inside, though! stay strong 🤠😎
Yep, stuff takes longer at this age, especially if it's over-engineered like this one. Lots of new stuff for me, so lots of lessons still to learn 😎🛠️😅
Great Work guys 👍.. are the main corner pillars laminated together.
Yes they are, should be good for strength and durability. 💪👍🛠️
@ I’ve a full roof to replace & I’ve seen a few using laminated lumber, I’d like to use for the main beam.. I’ve made them in the past , but I’ve quite a span .
I’ve heard of them used for that. Don’t know the technicalities, but good luck figuring it out. Let me know how it goes because we will have a big span in ours when it eventually gets built.
@HotkeysPortugal 😍🤩
Claro que sí ❤❤❤
😀
Very tidy, Phil. Well done.
Thanks a lot, more by luck than judgement perhaps but happy to get this far. Stick around for the proper roofy bit next week. ❤️🛠️👍
Looking good 😊
Thanks a lot, it’s good to be building something again that is intended to be a bit longer lasting than a lot of the temporary stuff so far. 👍🇵🇹🛠️
I’m always amazed at Phil’s knowledge.
You are so kind to say so. Fuelled by a lifetime of rapid research and trying to stay one step ahead of disaster. That, and learning from mistakes, which are many. ❤️👍🛠️
Beautiful job. Your outdoor kitchen is an envy! 👍🏻
Thank you so much, it’s taken a lot of time, some experiments, and a few mess-ups to get this far. Still a bit to go, but we are getting happier with it each week. Roll on the spring and warm weather, when we get to use it more as intended. 👍🛠️🇵🇹
Music and noise of sawing don't go together. And you Jane i also truly admire you will soon be losing weight if you go on with digging like you do - please take care.
I feel so much stronger after all the digging, and actually find it quite a meditative activity, and I don't have to get up a ladder to do it either - a good result in my book! 😎
I would have done 1 rafter each end,one central. Then four equally spaced, in between. And, hoped for the best lol.
Ah, nice idea, so many options and yet they are always a millimetre out somehow. I know mine are, but I look at it now and hardly beat myself up at all…..😂🛠️🇵🇹👍
Bom dia. A cada dia a propriedade vai tomando forma. ❤❤
That looked like a black squirrel, for many decades living in NY state I only saw chipmunks, or red or grey squirrels...when I was in my 40s my dad sent me a picture of a black one he saw, that was the first time I knew they even existed...I have seen more black ones the last couple of years with my own eyes, and much less chipmunks.
My daughter in Minneapolis area has two albino squirrels on her property. Fun to watch.
Like you, I had never seen a black squirrel before, so we had a bit of a debate over what it was. The public vote seems to be confirming it as 🐿️
Wow, Grace, that sounds amazing! 🐿️
Hola you two lovely people. Another great video, and Jane I'll tackle anything, but you put me to shame , digging is hard work. Well done, and outdoor kitchen looking good. ❤️
Obrigada, Patricia, glad you enjoyed it. What I might lack in 'trade' skills such as carpentry etc, I can definitely make up for with persistence with a shovel!💪💚
black squirel for sure.
We saw a mongoose cross the road the other day, so wondered if it was the same one, but I definitely thought the tail was too bushy 🐿️
Good work with great results.
Thanks so much. We're certainly very happy that the place is starting to take shape after being neglected for so long 😀🇵🇹
Muy buen trabajo. ❤❤
gettin' proficiente, are we? congratz! you're becoming portuguese, liter by liter... oops! auto-correct was in portuguese, sorry. little by little... 🤣 watch your back, though. stay strong! 🤠😎
Proficient? I'm not so sure. Slightly less incompetent more like! If the 'litre by litre' bit referred to wine, then we're all for it😉🍷🇵🇹
❤
Thanks a lot👍😎❤️🇵🇹
Its going to be amazing ❤
We certainly hope so!🇵🇹😎
What a interesting episode, we didn't know that if a property was classed as a ruin you couldn't live in it.
Thanks a lot, we’re just working the path between our interpretation of the regulations and the practicalities of what a ruined house is actually like. That throws up some interesting challenges, not least as the weather gets colder and wetter as now. 😎🌧️🛠️🇵🇹
@HotkeysPortugal we are campsite wardens in Gower, Wales so live most of the year in our modest older motorhome. I must admit we have shouted at the TV get a caravan 😆
You're so lucky - what a beautiful place to call home! It has been considered on more than one occasion, but we do like our spacious bed, especially if we've been working hard all day, and we've never found a caravan with a big enough bedroom 🛏️ 😉😴
Thankyou for the information about the GHIC we had forgotten our European card had expired so applied today 😊
That’s great to hear, thanks so much, and we are so pleased to have helped. Here’s hoping you don’t need them! 🤞😎🇵🇹
We have just found your channel via #portugalonapostcard. We are slowly catching up and are very inspired by what you have achieved.
Nice peapel Nice house Nice plaes. Al by al beutiful. 😮😮
Thank you very much - we are having a lot of fun doing the work, and it is great to sit down at the end of the day and enjoy the surroundings. 😎🇵🇹🛠️
Aren’t those posts rather overkill for just a roof perhaps I’m wrong but it just looks bigger than some wooden structures you see on new build permanent buildings
Possibly yes, but I’d rather go that way than under-spec it as it is intended as the ‘permanent’ structure there. I am working with the available materials - I originally planned 4x4 columns but the timber yard only had smaller or 6x6 in stock so I went stronger. Probably for the best as I will also be mounting some solar panels on top of it as well. 💪🛠️😎
Your kitchen is going to be so good when finished. Love the way you look after your tree's and all the work that you have put into making your pathways.
Thank you so much. We go one step at a time, it is nice to see some progress at last and the paths start to show how it will be one day.
Hola you two, great video of more good work moving forward. Hugs ❤️
Thank you so much 🤗 it’s great fun too - thanks for your support 😎🇵🇹🛠️
Very good work
Thank you so much 😀 it is nice to see the ideas turning to reality 😎🇵🇹🛠️
