Firstly, apologies for the long absence (by my usual standards anyway). Taking advantage of a rare sunny and crisp weather window I chose to return to my local moors, walking in a landscape where, millennia ago, Mesolithic hunter-gatherers would spend their summers and in more recent times, where old moormen would live their lonely lives on the moor-edge. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. 🎄

Oh my gosh looks amazing. Just coming up to a year of full time van life this is my channel 😀 good luck with your ventures guys, stay safe. God bless
Great effort Chris. I struggled myself last year with motivation for tent time, had loads of plans but each one ended with a night in the van. Im really going to push myself this year and make the effort and get back in the tent.
Braving the cold on Saddleworth Moor... wow..what an adventure! The wild camping experience looks both challenging and rewarding. Thanks for sharing this awesome journey in the Peak District!🤗🖐
That was a vixen fox mate 100% Enjoyed thanks Tony
Many thanks and best wishes, Chris.
Hi Chris, i thought that was a very good review espesially with it being your first. Like you say i also find the gortex/hybrid type boots are never fully waterproof so i only use them in summer. I always use full leather boots in winter and they may be heavier but i like to keep my feet dry. I'm after a good pair lightweight boots now so i will pop over to the shop in Marden - Mountain feet which you mention in these comments and see what they recomend.👍
Thanks Gary. I think this was my first and last review. I definitely wasn't comfortable doing this! I always walk in trainers now in summer, but have still not found the ideal footwear for winter, with my weird shaped feet. Unfortunately, Mountainfeet closed down, but I've heard good things with regards to a similar shop in Whalley, called 'Warm and Dry'.
@@ChrisJB Cheers for that Chris i'll have a trip over to Whally then. I used to buy my boots from Paul Braithwaits in Oldham but he also closed down around 10 years back.I still have my leather Brashers from there which he recommended for me .I find if you wash/clean let dry, then dub them up after every walk they will last for years, around 15 for mine and they are still waterproof. Thanks again.
On serious catch up Chris, our boy isn't dealing too well with puberty, he's a 24/7 whirlwind! Not leaving much time to watch our favourites on RUclips. Love watching your vids 😊 Fiona & Neil
Oh dear! We have a couple of teenagers too.....hard work. 😭
Hi chris, aother good video. When we did a walk from Crowden over into Greenfield early last year ,we saw several fox moth caterpillars along the paths but the highlight of our walk was a pair of kestrels flying around us whilst having lunch near Laddow rocks.
I like that walk between Dovestones and Crowden. Not done it for a good few years though.
I learn somthing with every vid. I have seen lots of those bags over the years, now i know what they are and for. I have never heard of the Twite or its nick name before and will be on the lookout for one. Thanks your doing a great job.👍
Cheers Gary. Unfortunately twite are extremely scarce locally nowadays. They were very common on the mooredge when I was a lad.
Nice 1 chris . I love these old pikes and monuments. The view you get from my closest, Bishops park obelisk is fantastic on a clear day ,Its posible to see Derbyshire ,Cheshire Yorkshire and North wales.🙏
Cheers Gary. Yes, there are some grand view-points hereabouts. I used to go up to Bishops Park a fair bit.
Hi Chris. I never noticed the rock with the fluting or the compass stone ,something to look out for next time up there. My father took us as kids around these places - it's great for kids.i like your knowledge of the wild life so i hope to improve mine which is very limited.thanks❤
West Nab is a nice one as it's quite near a road. I used to take the kids up here a lot. I remember once there were a load of wasps on the trig point and my daughter got stung!
Hi Chris I've just subscribed on the recommendation of a friend. Those small gamers look good. I'm forever adjusting or pulling the standard ones up as I've got matchstick legs. I know there's lots of wind noise on this vid but first attempt is OK by me as I know it's always windy on dog hill and that will improve in time.❤
How do Gary and thanks for the sub' 👍. This is an old one....I hope my vids have improved a little since this one 🙂. I filmed this on a very old phone.
@@ChrisJB Hi chris, Predictive text put gamers in instead of gaiters .😂 I've already learnt a couple of intresting things to look out for and only seen your first 2 vids. I like what i see and will be along for your YT journey even though i'm not a camper ,but like my mate said you have a good knowledge of animals and points of interest which makes for good content.Your video picture and sound will get better as i follow along as for the rest, its all good to me👍
@@garyproctor7899 Thanks Gary. Just out of curiosity, who recommended me to you? I'm wracking my brain. 🙂
@@ChrisJB Hi chris sorry to confuse you but it was a friend of mine not one of yours 😂
Nice one Chris. I know what you mean about getting out of the routines of camping, I've done exactly the same thing over my "new kitchen" break up till Xmas. Just keep feeling I'm pout of whack somehow. Just getting my mojo back now. Lovely video again. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Roger. Winter de-motivation isn't new for me, if I'm honest, but I can usually force myself out and overcome it. Unfortunately, this winter, I haven't found myself as able to. A change in circumstances and greater demands on my time haven't helped, but I'll perk up as spring approaches, as I always do. Bye for now, Chris
What tent did you camp in? Just curious
It's a Tarptent Scarp 1. 👍
@@ChrisJB cool
Hi Chris. First time seeing your video but enjoyed it. Shame you didn't get a shot of the mountain hare. They are fantastic though, have seen on Kinder before. Just wanted to ask though, what tent were you using? Cheers.
Hello Archi and thank you. Yes, I've seen them on Kinder and Bleaklow too. My tent is a Tarptent Scarp 1 🙂
It's always good to see you back in the Holme Valley again Chris. I'm sorry to hear about your bad fall though, i hope your ok now.
Thanks Ian. A bit sore for a few days after but all okay now. 👍
Another great video Chris, i really enjoyed it! Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours
Thanks Clare. Happy New Year to you and yours too. 👌
Brrrr!
It was chilly for sure Karen. 🥶
Looked another good camp mate , although a cold one for sure.Careful on that ice , my wife slipped on a muddy hillside in 2023 and ended up breaking her tibia and fibia, had to be stretchered off the hillside by MR, leg pinned and 2 weeks in hospital , took months to recover , we don’t bounce as well as these young uns do!
We certainly don't Paul. I didn't bang my head but certainly lay there in a bit of a daze for a few moments. That sounded flippin' nasty re the missus. 🙁
Hi Chris, That video was a true tonic, as I sit here dripping and sneezing from an un invited infestation by some sneaky virus. How many calories are there in paracetamol?
Thanks Peter. Hope you're feeling better pal. 🤞
That sounded like a nasty fall Chris, but like you say people more attentive when older! But know the feeling dealing with sheet ice over footpaths. We' ve been up to BlackHill in warmer weather. Excellent filming techniques Chris, but rather you than me camping out in those conditions. Well done for tackling though up on Saddleworth Moor. Hope your elbow recovers !
Thanks Shanita. I was sore for a couple of days, but was fine afterwards. I was back on Saddleworth Moor, just walking, yesterday. It was thick with freezing fog. 🥶
Very interesting and that light before sunset looked great 👍
These are my local hills Stig. Not very high or remote but they are special to me. 🙂
Great winter wild camp. Cheers from Norway 👍❄️
Thank you Stig. We holidayed in Norway a few years ago. One of the best countries I have ever been.
@ChrisJB Ok. Nice. That alone deserves a new sub 👍🙂❄️
@stigfloberghagenphotography Thank you. I've subbed back. 🙂
@@ChrisJB Many thanks 🙂
Great video, look blooming freezing.👍
Thanks. Yes, very chilly! 🥶

Glad to see you out buddy, Only had 1 walk out but no camp since October as renovating house, but nearly finished then full steam ahead, ATB george
Cheers George. It took a bit of effort but I was fine once I was out. Good luck with the renovations.
Stunning area for a winter camp Chris! Happy New Year👍👍
Thanks Anthony. Same to you. 👍
Cheers for another brilliant video. Hope you get out more this year mate. Might see you on the hills this year.
I hope so too Steve, though going from part-time to full-time work hasn't helped.
Great video as always Chris
Thanks 👍
Nice vid Chris, well done for getting out. As you know I'm local to you and I agree it's been 'proper grim weather' for a while now, so hardly surprised that it took a bit of effort with motivation. Spring is coming 🤩
Thanks John. It's that just getting out of the door sometimes. Once I'm out I'm okay. Ready for spring though!
Good effort! Thanks for reminding me to put me microspikes int the rucksack ;)
Cheers Steve. I literally slipped up forgetting them.
Perfect conditions Chris, love those cold dry days, brilliant light. You can probably see our house from there 🤔😜
Yep, good winter conditions for a change. Better than grey and wet anyway!
Thanks for the video Chris. A joy and an education to watch as always.
Thanks Paul. 🙂
Thanks for the video Chris. A joy and an education to watch as always.
Glad you enjoyed it Paul. 👍
Good to see you out Chris, I was out last weekend and it was Baltic in the North York Moors. They can be long nights.
How do Dave and ta. They certainly can. Better than rain though. 🙂
Lol... sheep are trixy, skittish buggers. You need to be mindful around lambing time; the odd one will push you to protect their young and beng heavy, and at knee height, it can end badly. I tend to give them a wide berth where possible. 🤣
These were very skittish, though spending a lot of time on my auntie and uncle's farm as a lad, they used to let me help out with various jobs with the animals so I'm pretty comfortable around them. I do remember a bloody big aggressive ram they had though.
Great to see you back up on the Moors in a tent Chris. I always thoroughly enjoy a Chris JB video. I know where you are coming from with Winter Wild Camping. I went out last night on to The West Pennine Moors. Really enjoyed it, but I had spent all day considering excuses not to go. Too much gear to take, too long in the tent. Probably not sleep for being cold etc. In the event I had a great nights sleep and enjoyed sauagae, mash fried onions and gravy, washed down with a few double chocca mocca coffees, whilst star gazing in the middle of nowhere. Then listened to the footy on the radio. In winter I take my OEX Bobcat, tiny tent once it's ziped up but incredibely warm. In fact I had a thermometer outside and one in the inner tent. 8 degrees difference. Incredible really for two sheets of polyester or whatever they're made off. Anyway, It's rekindled my enthusiasm and I'll be back out next week. Looking forward to your next adventure. Hope your elbow doesn't cause you too much pain.
Many thanks Alan. For various reasons I've been a bit slack getting out and as a result not putting much on You Tube. I'm hoping as the days lengthen and the birds start singing my enthusiasm will start to blossom again. I like my Scarp and am very familiar with it but I have seen it described as a cold tent though I've nothing to compare it with. ATB, Chris
Great to see you back out Chris , missed your content , just been looking on the OS , looks like another great location up on Saddleworth Moor , thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Rob. It's a great expanse of moor. Handy too when I don't want to go far.
It's great to be out on the moors in the winter snow, but the chances of that are much rarer these days. Glad you had the opportunity. Time to look forward to warmer days now. Best wishes Chris.
I agree Michael. It's the grey wetness of the typical winters we get nowadays that I really struggle with. I am ready for spring too. Hope you and Shanita are well.
A chilly one that Chris, hoping to get out before the spring. I may even try and film it 😅. Atb Grant
Cheers Grant. Hope you do film it. 🤞🙂
Another great video Chris. Thanks for making great videos for us and keeping us entertained. I like watching your video for future camping spots.
Many thanks Ikram. This spot is a handy one but not perfect. It's on a bit of a slope and I always feel I'm rolling.
I could not camp on Saddleworth Moor, there a children buried on that moor thanks to Hindley and Brady. You could be walking and pitching your tent were they lay.
Unfortunately, Saddleworth Moor will always be associated with those crimes from the 60s. However, there is so much more to the Moor than that. There are great walks, landscapes, wildlife, etc. As for the camp spot, it was several miles away from where the police focussed their searches.
@@ChrisJB The police had no idea where they were only what Hindley told them, they may have been buried miles away from the searches. Despite the great walks etc you could be where those children are laid. Your post made me physically sick but hey why let those poor children spoil your fun
@@janicejohnson6372 Most know that Saddleworth Moor has sad associations, but it is in a National Park, the Pennine Way crosses it and a large part of it is a nature reserve managed by the RSPB. It's a place of recreation for many. With that in mind, it is always going to be a popular place with folk who have a love for nature and the great outdoors. And so it should be. It is entirely possible to have a respectful awareness of the past, whilst still being able to enjoy the present.
@@ChrisJB As a nature reserve I have no problem with but otherwise I cannot think of s sadder place for recreation. I think the families of those children would agree with me,lets hope none of them come across the video like I did.
I think the areas the police searched were very close to the roads. Chris is miles away from the road areas. The moors are extremely beautiful and peaceful once you get away from the main tourist areas.
That wasn't black ice; that was the ghost of Myra attempting to keep you off the moor
I think it was just me being my usual gormless self.
Happy New Year to you too Chris. From start to finish I just absorb your stories like I’m with you on the hill. Cracking. I’m finding a lot of you tube stuff now is all about products and click bait. Not the case here. Keep it up! ATB Richard.
Same to you Richard and thanks. I agree, too much gear stuff and clickbait on YT. I'm not interested in those things really and as a result have really cut back on the folk I subscribe to. Best wishes, Chris
Good to see you out mate. Love your vids. Like someone else said, not full of someone talking crap. Btw, I bet if we had a competition of guy line tripping I’d beat you🤣Take care mate.
Thanks UP. I am such a clumsy bleeder at times! And don't get me started on losing things in the tent. For such a small space, I don't know how I manage it. ATB, Chris
Great to see you back out 👍
Thanks Matt👍
I've been waiting for this. A nice cold one to start the year🍻
Hope the wait was worth it. 🤞
@ChrisJB always mate👍
That looked reet code Chris ! Happy new year to you too buddy. Di you think a change of area might motivate you a little? Get to the lakes?
Hello Dave. A change of area probably would help, but the local hills are handy when you decide to go out at very short notice, or don't fancy a long drive. I have a bit of a funny relationship with the Lakes. I have a strong attachment to some parts, but others, for me are, dare I say it.....overrated 😬.
@ChrisJB Mmmm, over crowding definitely can be overrated that's for sure. Well, take care, Chris . If you fancy a mosey up here let me know.
@@Fellmandave1 I will. 👌
