One Word at a Time
Добавлен 7 сен 2013
I tell stories about language learning through the numbers, one word at a time.
After learning 10,000 German words, I'm here to bring language learning tips inspired by data.
For language learning apps, I've used Anki for years to build flashcards and familiarity with German and Hebrew along with other topics. I've gone through the "learn German for beginners" process, well past the A1 or A2 level and hope to share how to get through B1 or B2 to native speaker levels of fluency. I've read books, watched movies, listened to podcasts and binged shows in my target languages. Let data-driven insights help you build a study plan.

Language Learning 30 Minute Study with Me | Anki and German
I spent way too much time doing data analysis on a Gänsehaut book instead of actually reading the book 😂
this is how i learned german in germany. was sick for 2 weeks and just watched children's tv all day plus i had a german dictionary next to me for words i kept hearing but couldn't figure out.
Any other books / series in addition to Harry Potter that do this ?
I want to do a 10.000 word challenge for 4 languages (2500 words) this helped me a lot.
I can testify that easy german WORKS. In fact, it works so well I learned by only listening without even watching.
Terrorist
Why?
amazing video, love youe pacing
I have a question. Will this work for a complete begginer ? I mean, how could someone who starts learning a language be able to understand words in this context ? Or maybe I don't very understand how the 20x methods works. If so, can someone explain it to me please ?
That is a good question. If you sit and spend the time understanding what is being said, then yes it can help. But if you're expecting to just listen and absorb the language without understanding, that won't help much.
@OneWordataTime1 so this is not for a begginer right ? Because without looking what does each words means in a dictionary it's almost impossible to understand something (for a begginer still). Or does looking for the meaning of words can be down here ?
In Kurdish it is :Serok or Rêber به كوردي: سه روك يان رئبه ر
I learned one word from Trump and it is “Obamna”.
Covfefe
"the orange one and biden 2.0" lol I love it
The jokes are excellent😂
nice seforim collection
As a german it sounds kinda funny, how you said that you'd really like to read mein kampf (i dont mean it negativly i understand the curiosity). Thats just a sentence that would instantly spark jokes about you being a nazi (if you were german). Btw love your videos❤
I think at the free word in your target language it isn't 社長 but 大統領. I've been learning japanese for a year now, so I know that 社長 is more like a company president. But anyways, thanks for the vid :)
Bro casually programs a whole algorythm for us just to show how often words are spoken by politicians. Tremendous.
Is there anything else to do than counting the occurrences of a word and storing it somewhere
5:51 quick correction for the Icelandic there, it should be forseti not forseta. Just wanted to point that out! Great video.
Trememdous video!
i would stick to pre 2010 politics for English at least
Don't just vote, but buy bitcoin as well, it through the years will give to you more freedom and will change more society than just vote for president in each 4 year....
Lol
Lol
What amount of the words in the speeches and remarks are those of the politicians as opposed to those of the speech writers?
Bro if you try to learn portuguese through brazilians politicians probably you would get dumber than never before
thank your advices (zeg maar), im transforming my process of learning dutch interesting! I'm using a specific podcast, extracting the full transcript of the conversation and mastering "ngrams" that are spoken very frequently in a 1-hour episode (approximately 60 trigrams per week), which will at least make me fluent in understanding connectives before understanding key words, having a faster understanding of the content even if I don't know the words presented.
There’d be a whole lotta “Let me be clear” from the Obama students ….
2:13 and 2:43 made my mind blows. I love data analysis mannnnn (im looking for a job ( internship ) btw). can you made a video about how is this insane process?
I like your word salad Kamala jokes
So, you plotted Kamala in red, and Trump in blue... 😮
Great video, although it would be very funny (or disturbing) if people that learned English as a second language went around talking like Trump.
Bigly improvement for those guys, I say.
"I know words. I have the best words." -Trump, 2016
its easy. you just have to know variations of "billions" and voila!
Kamala’s rambling would be hilarious to hear though😂
Imagine trying to order a sandwich at Subway, with Obama's pomposity.
I literally learned English because I was fascinated by MLP as a child, especially the songs
I am watching arabic doraemon from few days ago ya sadiqi(my friend). I am not interested in watching spongebob and doraemon is my childhood nostalgia. As a native bangla speaker i learned english through cartoon and movies including english dubbed anime. I learned hindi+urdu by watching doraemon in indian disney channel. Cannot read or write hindi though. So I am very confident that doraemon can teach me the basics of my beloved **Arabic** Language In sha Allah.
you're my favorite shlomo
He refers to "colourful visuals that aid in understanding", but does his algorithm take this into account?
wow great content good vedio and sound quality for such a small channel i appreciate your effort
Wait. Did you post this advice on Reddit too? Funny thing is that I added more Easy German today because of it. About to start my first real book tomorrow.
We seem to have traded out gemaras for penguin classics
9:59 shots taken 💀and the meetings culture definitely deserves that. Awesome reflection, and congrats on the 1138 days mark! On your first lesson, the way I like to think about it is having both a why and a what, and realigning them continuously. The "why" is just a long-term goal which serves as a compass, your "what" is the next step that you take towards there (or following the analogy, path on the map towards the goal). Regularly reflecting on the relationship between the two and whether your current trajectory is aligned with your end goal is just systematizing your learning to make sure you stay on track. Though honestly, I think many people have a tendency of turning a simple reflection into an overthinking session and doing this could derail them completely 😁
Lived in Bavaria for three years. Can confirm. Not the same German.
I like the longer beard
Also, with knowledge of Hebrew and German, how is Yiddish for you (assuming you don't already know it)?
Yes! Language learning shouldn’t be about just apps; it’s about doing life in that language. Every convo, every show, each mistake is a step closer to fluency. 💪
I really enjoy your kind of content, please keep it up! ^^
Haven't watched the whole video yet but one word of advice. Do not read Mein Kampf. It's hilariously bad and not interesting at all. It's just sociopathic rambling. Nobody should read it. Yes it's interesting, especially sicne it was forbidden in germany for so long, but really.... it's not worth your time
Bet, im watching bluey in spanish and korean
unterhaltsames Video.
would you please make a video on how to improve listening ?

When I started learning German, I was going to language school in germany, but not really progressing. I started watching a german cartoon, and all of the sudden I was understanding a lot more, and then from there i moved on to drama's and stuff like "lie to me" and played in in german with german subtitles. These things let me level up my german really high really quickly. When I was a child though, I moved to the US wtihtout ever hearing the English language before, I learned how to speak in english after one summer vacation of watching cartoons like Thunder Cats etc. It helped me learn to speak and understand in English, and then school just helped reinforcxe what i learned.
Bei Lieblingskartoffelzubereitungsmethode hast du ein "zu" zu viel benutzt.
So ein Anfängerfehler
... und außerdem ein s zu viel (am ende von kartoffel).
I get why so many weebs end up learning some amount of japanese, some actively and others passively
So couldn't help but to notice all the books on that bookshelf! Would be interesting to hear what your top past and future reads are 😁
