    Great video and idea! But it bugs me that you say these are the "top 30,000 German ngrams" because theyre not! Theyre the top 30,000 ngrams used by the EasyGerman channel, which isnt a representative sample of the language. I'm not great at German yet but I'm certain that "zum Beispiel" isnt the third most-common bigram in the entire language. I can definitely believe that EasyGerman use it a ton though!

    One problem with any subtitle-based language study: tv producers in any language make subtitles as essentially an edited version of the script, not at all a strict transcription of spoken dialog. So non-standard language may be standardized, long sentences may be shortened, and dialog-subtitle mismatches are often intentional. (There are also intentional errors, which doesn't help!) Even if you're watching English TV translated into your language, the dub will try to match lip shapes while the subtitles do not need to, leading to them not lining up. I've found this frustrating whenever I've tried tv language study. Subtitles definitely help, but they are more a parallel asset than a real guide to audio input. That said, tools like this can certainly be helpful, especially if your enjoyment of the content means you keep studying! Just expect these problems as part of the course.

    I looked into LingoPie. It has Brazilian Portuguese but not European Portuguese and there's just enough of a difference that I'm not convinced it'll help me learn European Portuguese. (The difference between them is bigger than, say, American English vs. British English, but nowhere near as big as between Mandarin and Cantonese.)

    • @keinin_nihongo
      @keinin_nihongo Месяц назад

      Brazilian here! We can understand about anything we say to each other when talking to an European portuguese. The thing is, the accent is completely different, so, if you study one, you may have trouble understanding another. But for reading, don't sweat too much

      @keinin_nihongo 29 дней назад

      @@JustLIkerapunzel I see, that makes sense. That is cool, you are learning indirectly! I think it's most natural for natives to understand the European portuguese, much like American and British, but for those who learned maybe it's a bit of a pain. I mean, I did watch mostly youtubers from Portugal when I was a teenager, never even had to think too much about it. I even heard some of my friends saying "It's like a spanish portuguese" hahahah

    The translations on Lingopie are preety poor, especially for Korean (which I’m learning) and Chinese (my native language). Some say this is because they use literal translations for learning purposes, but why not offer both literal and meaningful translations, like Language Reactor does? Additionally, there’s often no word breakdown, and words are only shown in their conjugated forms. This makes it hard to review effectively. What’s even more frustrating is that Lingopie sometimes limits the number of available episodes for a show, even if the show has more episodes, cutting you off at key moments. The content itself is also disappointing-mostly cartoons or low-quality soap operas, even for widely-studied languages like Spanish. As for the Netflix integration, you still need a separate Netflix subscription, and Lingopie only supports certain shows, which doesn’t seem like a benefit. In comparison, Language Reactor allows you to watch all Netflix shows and RUclips videos with better subtitle options, plus AI tools for idiom and grammar breakdown. If you’re already paying for Netflix, there’s no need for Lingopie’s limited offerings. In short, Lingopie feels like a more expensive, fancier but less effective version of Language Reactor. I regret my yearly subscription-it’s been ten months, and I have barely used it. I feel misled by the hype around it. While Lingopie excels in advertising, it has a long way to go to in my opinion, given that there are options like Language reactor and migaku, which cover a wider range of options.

    As a german it sounds kinda funny, how you said that you'd really like to read mein kampf (i dont mean it negativly i understand the curiosity). Thats just a sentence that would instantly spark jokes about you being a nazi (if you were german). Btw love your videos❤
