Based in Auckland New Zealand I like to make and create with my hands. Mainly in wood but I’m happy to use any medium that gives me the results I need. So, I thought I’d start a RUclips channel to show different random projects and share the journey of some of my work. It's a bit of a mix of projects from woodworking, carving, chainsaw carving, landscaping, and other random projects.
Leftover decking timber, let's build an outdoor table with it!
Using leftover Kwila decking timber I make a couple of outdoor picnic/barbeque tables. Because it’s an outdoor table I didn’t want to invest too much time in making the joinery, so I used dowels for the joinery and invested in a doweling jig to make the joints. I’m very pleased with how they both ended up and they are a step up from the everyday outdoor furniture you get today.

The greatest gate build I’ve ever done
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.21 день назад
In this video, I finish the gate build, I did the frame in the last video, and now I am making the tongue and groove panelling. Fix these to the frame using stainless steel screws, and give everything three coats of stain to finish. Then add some big hinges, mount it onto the gate post, and add some sliding bolts and a handle. As I said this is the greatest gate I’ve ever built, but it is the o...
Big gate build, never made one, but let that not stop us
Просмотров 981Месяц назад
The epic fence construction continues, but in this episode, I’m finally working on the gate, I’ve never built a gate, let alone one of this size and it was full of challenges. In part one I take rough-sawn Macrocarpa slabs, I cut them down to 160mm width boards and then milled them down to size. Another first is rip sawing on the bandsaw 150mm planks and making big mortise and tenon joints.
Don't look like a duck, but will it sound like one?!!
Просмотров 8233 месяца назад
I have a go at making a duck caller out of Queen Ebony, turning the barrel and the insert. Lots of new challengers, I make a brass band out of a scrap plumbing fixture, then etch some decorations in it, and try to figgure out how to get it to quack. Then make a little box for it to go into. Let me know what you think.
Whats some gate posts without a fence, so lets build a fence!
Просмотров 3133 месяца назад
The ongoing story of the need for me to replace a couple of gates that I really hate. So far we have the overcomplicated saw horses, squared gate posts, setting the posts in concrete and now I’m going to build the fence around the gate posts. The framing is 200 x 50 H3 treated timber and the palings are ship lapped. After the fence was built I put in a mowing strip as well.
Setting Big Gate Posts in concrete
Просмотров 3864 месяца назад
I’ve made a couple of 3m long 200 x 200 gate posts and now I need to get them into the ground. This video is of me pulling the old gate and fence down, pulling out the old posts, digging a couple of very big holes by hand, and setting the two gate posts into concrete. Grab a beer put your feet up and enjoy the toil!
Making 8 x 8 Gate posts
Просмотров 4735 месяцев назад
So, we made the sawhorses in the last video to get the future gate posts off the ground so we can work on them at a more comfortable height. The next thing to do is take the round posts and make them 8 x 8 square. I used a process of chainsaw and axe to square the posts up. It was a lot of hot and sweaty work, but I was very pleased with the results. The next job will be getting them in the gro...
Overcomplicated Sawhorses
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
I need a good set of sawhorses for an upcoming project, so in this video, I make a set out of recycled pallet timber. I had to come up with different solutions for the project one being a router jig for cutting the pockets for the legs. As always with my projects I’ve made them a lot more complicated than they needed to be but was still very happy with the results.
I make an Acorn, but what's inside?!
Просмотров 2156 месяцев назад
I’m making a unique piece in this video it’s made from firewood Taraie which is a native wood of New Zealand and it’s going to be made into the shape of an Acorn. But not any old acorn, this will have a lid made from the cap of the Acorn, and inside will be cavities to hold salt and pepper. I’ll make a little spoon as well.
Picture frames Christmas gifts
Просмотров 1007 месяцев назад
Merry Christmas everyone. In this video, I make some picture frames out of old white Oak skirting boards. Using my 45° cutting sled I cut very accurate miters and then make splines for the corners using another jig for the little table saw. Then I cut and installed the glass, print, matt board, backboard, pins, tape, and hangers with string. The prints I made in the previous video when I made t...
Making a Book press and printing a wood block print
Просмотров 4457 месяцев назад
I’m making a book press for my daughter out of some spalted white Oak. It was a fun project with some cool joinery, large dovetails, and my first wedged mortise and tenon joints. With the press made I thought I’d test it out with a first attempted woodblock print. I was pleased with the results and enjoyed the project, so let me know what you think.
Making cat scratching posts
Просмотров 1748 месяцев назад
I’m saving our couch from our house full of cats wanting to scratch it up. I’m making the scratching posts out of some recycled pallet timber and some mystery wood that is very hard. The posts are designed to lock into the legs of the couch and a flat top for putting your drink on.
Making a small thin Box
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I’ve been asked to make a small thin box which I’ve used white Oak to make and hollowed out the inside using chisels. I used magnets to close the box but found they were quite strong and made it hard to open. Because of this, I put together a latchey thing that forces the box open breaking the magnetic seal and assisting with opening the box. Inlayed a monogram in the lid using bone as well.
Sculptural Vase Holder
Просмотров 9999 месяцев назад
I made a bit of a sculptural piece in this video, it’s a vase holder for displaying flowers with the wood supporting the vase so when flowers are put in the vase it won’t tip over. I’ve seen similar things, so I thought I would give it a go and give it as a birthday gift to someone who grows beautiful flowers. It’s made of White Oak out of a firewood pile, added some bowtie inlays to help stabi...
Making a wooden spoon and spatula
Просмотров 13210 месяцев назад
In the previous video I made a cutting board, it’s a gift for my niece's wedding, in this video, I’m using some of the scrap pieces left over to make a spatula and spoon. The wood is recycled Kauri from old weatherboards off a house. Most of the work was done using hand tools.

Great work as always.
@LewisSkeeter thanks for the positive feedback as always Lewis 😁
That’s some beautiful wood. I cant believe you can build decks from such an amazing looking hardwood. And that does look like its good and hard. Here in the US most decks are made from ground contact construction lumber or that nasty looking composite plastic material. I can get Kwila here, but I’d have to take out a second and maybe a third mortgage to afford it. Pricey stuff. Another great video. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback Jurb, we have two main wood options here in NZ Pinus Radiata, which is a soft wood but cheaper, and the Kwila. Kwila is the more expensive, but a lot longer lasting and durable. It does make nice furniture but it is bloody heavy!
Good looking gate! Have you used Sikkens before - how is it long term? I'm shopping around for a fence stain
My first time using the Sikkens, I did a bit of research and a few commercial gate builders were using it and that's why I thought I'd give it a go. I put 3 coats of the Sikkens on the gate, it's recommended you recoat every two to three years. I'm happy with the product so far, looks good and covered well now we just see how it lasts. Thanks for the feedback.
Bloody awesome mate!
@@SandySchaare thanks Sandy 👍
Very nice gate, congrats. I believe that curve at the top of the stiles are Finials (a decorative feature on the top or end of any object)😀
@stinkees696 thanks for the information, I appreciate the feedback 👍
a toothpick would also work and avoid hitting the nail in the future
@pollelibre2649 good suggestion, definitely use that next time. Thanks for the feedback 👍
Great job, did you put any mechanical fixings through the tenons, or did I miss that?
@brianbostock1698 thanks for the feedback, no mechanical fixings just glue and a tight fit. I thought about running some pegs through the tenons but the timber I used is prone to splitting so decided not to risk it.
Great job, watched the entire build in one day, 🙂
@kutchyf1 thanks for the feedback glad you enjoyed the series
She’s a beauty!
@@dougieranger thank you for the feedback.
I saw this Video and you instantly got me subscribing I can't wait to watch your other videos and future ones
@BigBird2138 thanks for the sub, it's a eclectic mix of videos so enjoy.
Very touching reminder ....Subscribed👍
@pierrecouronne3096 thank you, I appreciate the sub👍
Very nice job bro Should last a good couple of lifetimes ❤
@davefieldhouse5119 thanks Dave, should last me out.
My only suggestion is the addition of a bolt that can be padlocked so that anyone that climbs the fence can’t use the gate. A beautiful looking gate.😁👌👌❤️❤️
@terrystephens1102 thanks for the feedback, I didn't show it but you can run a padlock into the back of the bolt to lock the gate. Like you say stopping people jumping over and opening it.
Very nice gate build. Yes I hate them too. I've never had one I was happy with. Hopefully this one lasts a long time.
@homestead_diy thanks for the feedback, fingers crossed it will last, certainly better than what was there.
Some of the most satisfying videos on RUclips are just nice series of a project from start to finish - these absolutely hit the mark, great filming and editing, commentary spot on, well done!
@scottlillynz I appreciate the feedback, especially considering the work that goes into it. Still trying to get better all the time.
Great job!
@@richgetz thanks for the feedback 😀
Bloody good job, mate. Fair dinkum! ;)
@jt9498 thank you 😊
ice work!
@@richgetz thank you for the feedback
Really great videos! Criminal that your subscriber count doesn't (currently!) reflect the quality here.
@@scottlillynz thanks Scott I appreciate the support!
Great job!
Thanks for the feedback Lewis, I was pleased with the results too.
Beautiful work...I loved your attention to the fine details... & you obviously know how to keep sharp tools!
Thanks Geowhiz1, I found out long ago a sharp tool gives far better results and is so much nicer to use.👍
Thats amazing wayne, nice work mate👍
Thanks Scotty, worked a treat on the pond too👍
You should be very proud !!
Thanks David, yes I was pleased with how it came out and more importantly the Brother liked it as well.😁
Beautiful present. Love your channel and your output. You should call it 'Aussie Bloke In His Shed'. :)
Thanks Lewis, I'm glad you like my little videos, not a bad title for my channel but I would make one small correction "Kiwi bloke in a shed" I've heard New Zealand and Australian accents do sound the same though. Probably because the Australians are always trying to copy us. 🤣😉
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
That slot or dado in the smaller post is brilliant. I'll remember that for future use. Thank you and great looking fence, I look forward to your gate build.
Thanks for the feedback jurb, I ran a big screw through it as well, just to lock it all in, and made it even more solid👍
Brilliant. Well Done!
Thanks, Natanael, I appreciate the feedback.
Great video buddy, lovin the safety shoes mate !!!!! 😂😂 waynoo ol chap!! Hope you are well mate, you look well. Scotty tate here, just discovered your videos, very good!!
Hey Scotty, I had my hearing protection on🤣welcome to my RUclips channel and glad you like them. I hope you are well too!!
@@WTCreations😆😅😅 yeah I've subscribed, liked the duck pond stuff too, more of that this season please😅😆 you always talked about it, now i know what ya talkin about, cool spot. Shez your a talented man on the chainsaw too, i never knew that.
LIKING AND SUB_ING cuz I can relate to the ultra exhaustion! Good work-out! I cut veneer out of 3" thick oak&its no picnic! But worth it when presenting your completed project!!
Thanks for coming on board Sethwarner2540. You are right when the project is finished you never think about how hard it made you work but how nice it looks and what you want to try/improve next time.
Nice work! One thing I would suggest is take some close ups of that fine work once finished, show off the tenon/mortise joints from all sides, top and bottom at the end of the video. But otherwise, great work. Love the 4 degree angle, the perfect angle.
Great feedback, thank you & suggestions taken on board👍
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
i like the style of the carving
Glad you like it, I was pretty happy with the end result too.
clean lines!!!
Thanks for the feedback
Nice work.
Thanks Lewis

Il n'a vraiment rien d'exceptionnelle... couper un arbre pour ça, c'est plus que nul!🧐
Thanks for the feedback TylerRed, you're right cutting down a tree just for a chainsaw carving is not very clever, unless it's dead. But using the stump of a tree removed because it was dangerous utilises something that would have just been burnt.
Great work!
Thanks Lewis
Wow, lots of nice "extras" (monster dovetails, wedged tenons, etc.). I hope you get a nice payback (first thought: a cake; second thought: hand-bound collection of shop prints, notes, ???). The jig used to make the dovetails made me smile...how often do we make jigs (and templates etc.)--often "one use only"? And I wonder how many out there get just as much satisfaction from making the "helpers" as we do the project itself? Oh last but not least: GREAT print! 👍
Thanks for the feedback Fractode, so true the comment on the jigs and templates. Especially when they work!
Great project ...10/10
Thanks John
I love how you did the tapered leg!
Thanks for the feedback Lawrence!
Beautiful repair
Thanks antoniolozano
You have such talent Wayne. The Irish trinity knot is gorgeous.
Thank you Craftylady70, glad you like it🙂
I love it.
Thanks, Lewis, I was pleased with how they came out too.
Absolutely beautiful little box. Fabulous workmanship and terrific problem solving.
Thank you for the feedback
I can't decide what I'm more jealous of: your sketching skills, coping saw finesse, or your workshop setup! Love this build, been wanting to do something similar for ages. Great work
It took me a long time to get my little workshop, and it's definitely my happy place now. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you liked the build.
Lots of work for a little box! I like how it turned out.
Thanks for the feedback
i dont have a bandsaw. i dont have a chop saw. Bye.
Thanks for the feedback jtreg, when I first started woodworking I didn't have a bandsaw or chopsaw and made everything with just hand tools. I've over time gained tools that help speed up the process of breaking the timber down and taking the donkey work out of the woodworking. I only get a couple of days a week in the shop and these tools help process the timber faster giving me more time to create as well. As you would have seen in the video there is still a lot of handtool work done.
Awesome. 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🙋🏼♂️
beautifull art work. Never really did wood working on my own , was always too scared to do it. Props to you for making great artworks.
Thanks for the feedback, a lot of the stuff I do I'm learning on and can use the skill in another project. Some times you just gotta jump in and give it a go 👍
