IBM Keypunch by Herman Hollerith: World's First Data Storage & Processing System. An ITM Video.
In 1890, Herman Hollerith designed a system which used cards, into which holes were punched to store the data from the US Census. Keypunch machines translated keystrokes to hole patterns, which were read by machines to tabulate columns or to sort the cards.
For 80 years, his system provided businesses and the government with the tools to store and process data, whatever requirements they had. Hollerith's system was the world's first data storage and processing system, and it became the industry standard for a century.
Every piece of IT equipment on the planet, from iphones, to laptops to the internet, began with Hollerith's punched card systems.

'The Histories' by Herodotus: The Persian Wars. An ITM Clock video.

Herodotus lived in the 5th Century BC, and wrote the first history book the world has ever seen. Correction, the first book ever! Prior to 'The Histories', written works were mostly short stories or parables. Herodotus studied the customs and events of the ancient world, and summarized in his 900 page epic accounting of The Persian Wars. He lived during the wars, so knew first hand of the leade...

This video is Part 1, with excerpts from the first half of Herodotus' boo...

Starting in the 1850s, Match Safes would be crafted, often by jewelry makers like Tiffany and Fabrege', to carry the matches safely. They became a key fashion accessory, often more important and valuable than a pocket watch. Th...

Not trying to sound like a smarty but the ring shown being placed into the clock is the identity ring made out of aluminium and cannot be removed unless you cut off the foot. Racing ring is made out of rubbing which can be pulled off easily

Why would you add music to this? The music is way too loud. There should be no music when we need to hear your voice. People interested in this video would rather hear the sounds the clocks make.

It appears that I have a major component of the "John McCaskey electric program clock" except my program wheel looks to be driven by clock type spring movement. Could you please reply back so I can give you my E-mail and I can send pictures for you to evaluate please. This video may have just solved my mystery. Thank you. Chris.

Hi Ralph, Thanks for the note, sorry about the delay. Regarding adding a spacer above the adjusting nuts to speed it up, yes, go for it. I've done that myself, and having bought 150 master clocks, I realize in their day 'a good fix is one that works'. Regarding the adjusting nuts sequence, the nut with the prongs goes on last / bottom. It's a 'fine tuning adjustment, and doesn't have to touch the upper adjusting nut, since it can make small adjustments faster or slower. Have fun. Dave.

Hi Dave. I just replaced a broken suspension spring with a Seth Thomas #2. It works fine but the clock is running extremely slow, so much so that I've maxed out the adjustment nuts on the pendulum shaft. I'm going to add some spacers above the adjusting nut to raised the height of the weights. Does this sound reasonable or might you have a better solution? Also, a dumb question. I have two adjusting nuts, a chrome one with numbers and a black one with prongs. How should they go on the pendulum shaft? (a child in the house removed them and so I don't know the original orientation. Thanks, and thank you for the wonderful video.

Hi. Thanks for watching. If it runs when you put pressure on the weights, it sounds like you have a 'resistance' problem. Maybe try putting just a touch of clock oil on each gear shaft, where it enters the plate. front and back of the movement, both ends of the shaft. Worth a try. Good luck!

I'm a little disappointed about the lack of info about their "direct read" clocks that told the time in illuminated fashion, with numerals shown. I.I.N.M., such clocks were atop their buildings at the original 590 Madison Avenue in New York from the mid-1950's to that building's demolition in 1968, and at 616 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago where they would be in that city until the construction and opening of One IBM Plaza in the early 1970's; plus, the original jump clock of the MONY Building (now known by its address of 1740 Broadway) and the time display that was part of the huge Bond Clothes "spectacular" atop their Times Square store from 1948 to 1954.

I have to be honest about it that Blickensderfer are not a good typewriter at all( in my personal opinion) , it’s very flimsy, low quality material, unreliable, and definitely not a “ user friendly “ machine whatsoever, but I do love it very much because of it’s ingenuity design and it’s minuscule size and super lightweight ( which is also contributed to its inferiority) . Great invention but not a good typer by any means. I do love Blickensderfer very much but just like a woman, you love her very much but that doesn’t mean she’s an angle.

Hello Dave. Thanks for the very informative video. I need help with a customer's clock. They're complaint is that the winding mechanism has become more noisy lately. I'm not very familiar with these clocks, and I don't know what might be causing this additional/excessive noise. Everything seems to be working okay, in spite of the noise. The only thing I notice that I think is somewhat questionable, is there seems to be quite a bit of end-play in the motor shaft itself. The bearings/bushings all seem okay. Is there any chance that this could be the cause. Can you offer any suggestion? Thank you for reading my comment. I'll check back. Pete
