Berry Beauty in Winter: Gorgeous for You, Tasty for the Birds 🍓
Ilex Verticillata aka Winterberry is native USA plant that loves moist soil so make sure you choose an appropriate place for it. More sun equals more berries but most importantly they are dioecious which in this case means the female produces the berries and need an appropriate male pollinator to produce the most berries. I hope you have a BERRY good time growing this! 😊

Vitex Shoal Creek (Chastetree aka Monk's Pepper)
Great video. I agree this is a wonderful rose to have. It is almost always in bloom and fragant. I got mine at Edmunds in March of 2024.-they still have today. In general, Kordes roses are very healthy and this one is no exception.
So beautiful!! I LOVE pink roses. Thanks so much for posting this video as I ordered this rose from Palatine Nursery in Canada. It's sold out now, unfortunately. I'm looking forward to seeing how she does next year in my Zone 5 garden.
Do the bees 🐝 make the orange rose more fragrant?
Ouch $35. I was thinking you could wire the berries into a wreath or some greens and lay it on top of the birdbath. 🤷♂️
I had Quicksilver for several years, and I absolutely loved it. For some reason it decided to die though. Quicksilver has stiff upright canes and needs little, if any, support. I just made an order from Antique Rose Emporium over Black Friday weekend because they offered free shipping. That helps with the expense because they've gone up from $19.99 to like $34.99 per rose in the past few years. Mine will be shipped in March.
I'm so glad you like it and you got a Black Friday sale!
Shame on these celebrities!
Shame!!!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. What zone are you in?
Thanks Zone 6
You have so many roses, you’re bound to have some winners! I’ve pretty much given up on mine. They just don’t get enough sun. Any survivors can stay though. As far as zone bending, I’m in CT and my dahlias come back every year. I just bury them under 8 inches of mulch.
That's a good trick for the dahlias!
Thank you for this review... buying the modkat flip bow❤😁
😍😍😍😍😍😍
Having seen eremuus growing in the wild, drainage is key to growing them successfully
Yes! 👍
I’m going to order it from Antique Rose Emporium right now and have it delivered in the spring of 2025. I absolutely think this rose is beautiful and the parentage are some of my favorites since I own a lot of David Austin and Kordes Roses. Thank you for sharing it helped me with my decision.
I'm so glad it was helpful. I actually planted another one this fall. :)
Thank you so much for your video you are the first person that was really helpful. I have a problem at the moment with roses being at wrong place and I have to move it even though it's not it's season at the moment. You are the only person so far that has given me useful and helpful information on transplanting my roses.
I'm so glad it was helpful in any way. Thanks for your comment! 👍
Nice video. Just one more thing, please make a video on how to harvest red coral honeysuckle seeds from berries? And how to germinate them. Lovely video
Good idea! I never did that. I only grew from cuttings and it took a long time.
Its too high and the splash will make a mess. It should of been buried deeper so it empties near ground level.
I mentioned that in the comments that I ended up burying a downspout under the gravel there since we have a gravel driveway. 👍
Wow!! clear video of challenges(even with the $$$) to making a open-French drain. Actually best i have seen, & I have seen too many.
I'm so glad you found it interesting. Thanks for the comment!
This is a KORDES rose, not a David Austin !!!
Yep, you can see that in the description and in the video I only compared it to David Austin. Happy Saturday! 👍🌹
Thank you. One thing that for me was critical with my clay heavy soil is to plant them raised a little bit because good drainage is critical for them.
Yes! It helps those roots breath during wet conditions! 👍
Hi, so lovely! Have you seen another hot pink rose from David Austin called Princess Alexandra of Kent? I am asking since you have many DA roses too :) Wonder if Raspberry cupcake still beats PAoK in terms of color and fragrance.
Yes, I have a few Princess Alexandra of Kent roses which are not as healthy for me so far but it is still early: Maybe they need more time to settle in. Flowers are bigger on PAOK but I think RC has better fragrance so far.
@@FumblingwithFlowers I see! Thanks for the input! I should try out Raspberry Cupcake for sure. It is out of stock in many websites but surely it will be available sometime in the future. Also, how thorny is Raspberry Cupcake compared to other roses you have?
@@Maru0118 I'd say no worse than most other roses but much less thorny than Gertrude Jekyl and prickly 'Blanc Double de Coubert' rugosa. Always check Home Depot for roses and local garden centers for the best deals.
Where can I buy this kind of tree peony
I got mine at Breck's. Tree peonies are slow growing so they are very expensive the bigger they are. They sell the smaller size. Still expensive but hopefully one day worth it. :)
It’s beautiful! I’ve debated on getting this rose but your video has sold me on trying it. May I ask what type of fertilizer do you use on it?
Thanks. I've added fish fertilizer in the past but usually just compost. I have heavy clay soil.
@@FumblingwithFlowers I've got a mix of sandy and clay soil here in Florida. I need to add more compost.
Excellent review and just what I wanted to know about Cardinal vs Red Twig. I got 2 Red Twigs on sale but then saw a Cardinal in a video. Also, I have deer so thank you for mentioning that. Think I made a good choice. Thank you!
Thanks, I'm so glad. I don't know why I can't see comments earlier. I hope they do well for you.
100% Best video I've seen in ages on RUclips. I've found myself wondering the same thing every time I see these on TV.
It like 70% commercials are for gambling. It's weird.
I share your obsession...I bought one rose plant...then another...then another...
You understand ❤️
You did a nice job! Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Whst tupe of fertilizer will they need
What type of fertilizer should we
I don't think any fertilizer needed. They grow fast on their own. We have nutrient rich clay soil but I did mix in some compost at the time of planting.
I saw them at clearance of Lowes and was surprise to find such a fine rose there! I bought 2 of them, whose flowers were almost done. I deadheaded and planted them on the ground. Surprisingly only one week later they started to produce lots of shoots, and buds appeared about one more week after that. How vigorous they are!
I'm so happy you can enjoy it too! It is proving to be a special one.
Green giants are zoned to zone 5. Thuja Occidentalis ‘Hetz Wintergreen’ arborvitae are zoned colder and grow similarly to green giants. Nice vid‼️
Where do you purchase Raspberry Cup cake Rose?
Check local garden centers and even Home Depot you can get lucky.
I bought 2 of them recently from Lowes for $14 each (clearance)

Just brought a “winter fire”! Looks very promising. Have it at a corner of a driveway border in front of a white fence. It’ll eventually have a peanut butter tree canopy to shade it from 6-7hr sun in summer. Mixes nice with ninebark and Fothergila. Thanks for this video! Let’s me know maybe what I’ll expect. CT can’t be too much difference than NJ😂Cheers!
I hope it works well for you. Some plants can cheer us up in winter.
Did you plant these from seed? If so, where did you get the seeds from? I was used to grow it in England, where it self seeded everywhere
The tall ones were starter plants from Etsy and the shorter cultivars Lollipop Verbena were on sale from Jackson and Perkins. :)
I also picked one from HD on sale for the same price. Just planted it and was wondering abt the growth Habit and structure. Can see both in your video, so thanks for sharing. I am in zone 6a. I look forward to the next season
A very enjoyable video. Thank you!
My neighbors have one on the rear property line with my downward sloping yard. Its roots, the biggest of which grows high above ground, have reached my patio, 50 feet away. The rest of them spread across the top of the soil in a fine web. Nothing other than weeds grows more than 30 feet from its trespassing trunk. It contributes a variety of debris year-round and attracts boxelder bugs that crawl all over my house every spring. It’s the only species of tree I hate.
I'm sorry you have to deal with that. 🌹Hopefully no branches come down on anyone. 🙏
I planted 5 green giants this summer to block my annoying neighbours next door. They never mow and leave junk around their yard. I can't wait until my giants have blocked my view of their lazy and out of control yard.
O I'm so sorry you have annoying neighbors. I was so happy to move away from annoying neighbors and now we have nice neighbors. Our one place where most people can relax is at home and inconsiderate people can ruin even that. Please make sure they get enough water. Green Giants are really beautiful trees. Btw, your choice of 5 is a nice odd number that is pleasing to the eye too.
Thank you for all the details you posted in your video. You did a wonderful job and I learned a lot of stuff regarding type of material, name of items etc etc. Great job…👍
Thanks for letting me know. I'm so glad. 🙏
I'm also in NJ and just recently posted a video on this plant! Our openings were very similar! Love the video and love the wider shots of your garden. Very beautiful!
Eden rose is a rose for shade gardens. You planted it exposed to all day direct sun and it's delicate rosettes got burned. Move it to a more shady spot where it gets coverage from afternoon sun.
Thank you, that is good advice however this is the only year it did so poorly despite the growing crepe myrtle tree next to it giving it more shade this year. I believe the darned rose slugs may be the main culprit. I will try to treat those rose slugs next year. I'm not looking forward to that work lol.
Is it black spot resistant?
Yes! So far it is has been the most healthy rose in my garden.
3:58 - I never expected a pine to be eaten by deer
I was surprised too! It turns out deer will eat ANYTHING 1) if deer don't usually have access to a particular plant 2) if deer are hungry enough
3:30 which one is the most fragrant then?
The strongest rose I've *consistently* experienced in my area is Gertrude Jekyll. It's fragrance is more Old Rose aka Damask while this rose is more Fruity. 😍🌹
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I will check into this system. I love how it can be hidden under mulch etc. Ingenious hacks with the end bit!
I'm so glad you liked the video. Good luck with your project! 👍
Thank you for the video I think I should buy more of them 🤔
It's a gorgeous tree, I think and all year round. My pine tree looks sad but my green giants are still fluffy and pretty much green all winter.
Did you ever have problems with it leaking from the connection points? I sure did.
I didn't notice any leaking from connection points but it is buried under mulch and the amount wouldn't be an issue in that area because we have a good deal of soil for it to drain into. If it's causing an issue for your situation, have you thought about disassembling it and putting silicone at the connections to make it water tight?
@@FumblingwithFlowers that is my next move....thank you!
It works. Took a lot of effort and ingenuity and I think you won. Honestly in this day and age I have spent too much time on RUclips, Amazon, Home Depot looking for 40 in down spout diverters and non are aesthetic at all . Found one that was 36 inches flat with 2 inch lip that you can fill with small stones but it's a few inches too short and those with the fat round attachments are hideous. I'm wondering if a piece of the gutter itself cut to fit under the downspout would work and fill with stones to keep secure and look somewhat ok. Here's the issue, a lot of people have uneven yards or want water to be directed specifically. Yes those hard plastic flat ones work but seem to only be 2 feet in size.
I sympathize. I don't want to think about how much time I've spent searching for things or obsessing about things that probably don't warrant it. Sometimes it's best to experiment and do something different (especially if it's not costly) to see what works for your unique set of circumstances. Best of luck!
Your garden is beautiful. The last few years I’ve been buying a bag of earthworm castings from my local Costco in the spring. The coloration on my roses has never been better since adding that.
Thanks. It's a work in progress. Nice. I will keep that in mind. 🙏🌹
Which weather zone r u in
Zone 6. In NJ
Very nice! Definitely takes time for them to settle in. Do any of your roses form nice hips? Mine don’t, but I’ve seen some and I’m jealous. Look out for Japanese beetles. I’ve been finding a lot this year.
Thanks! Rugos set hips but I've been deadheading trying for a rebloom. I have a purplish rugosa that is setting hips right now. I decided not to deadhead it because it's not a great rebloomer anyway. Some can be very nice.
