    Fair video. The 24-90 is the best zoom I’ve ever used, and it is a beast. It’s not something I would ever carry around. I use it for events on a tripod, and it’s superb. Re: the variable aperture, note the alternatives. Lens designers are faced with three primary components - performance, cost, size - and they usually optimize for two of them. Most fixed aperture zooms go to 70mm. You get 29% more with the 24-90. To make it a fixed 2.8 throughout would make it *massive*. The fact is lens designers can always make the aperture at the wider end greater, but it’s hard to do. Would you complain if it were a fixed 4.0, like most zooms that extend past 70mm? Peter Karbe decided to make it more versatile with decreasing focal lengths. I’m a fan. 😊 Btw, I’m also a prime guy with 14 M lenses, which is 95% of my photography. I also have the 35 APO-SL, which is a masterpiece.

    Solid request, I would love the same thing. I would happily sacrifice the convinence of a regular zoom lens for a "step" zoom. When we are fixed at a certain focal length we tend to position ourselves better, keeping the right distance from the subject at a particular focal length.

  • @JianzhiShi
    @JianzhiShi 9 дней назад

    While the 24-90 is a fine lens, unfortunately(or is it?) the 24-90 and 90-280 were designed by Panasonic, and the 16-35 was from Konica Minolta, according to their optical design patent assignee.

    😊 Call me weird or accuse me of having no taste, but I find photos shot at extremely wide apertures, like f/2 or lower, look unnatural. The abrupt “wall of blur” right behind the subject just doesn’t feel true to life, and in 30 years, I wouldn’t want to look at pictures where everything except me is lost in a wash of bokeh. That seems like a pretty sad way to preserve memories. If you want a bit of subject separation, it should be done subtly if stoping down the lens. After all, this isn’t cinematography. Just look at the work of painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Caravaggio, or Velázquez. Even though they masterfully directed attention to their main subjects, they never obliterated the background into an indistinguishable haze. Instead, they used light, shadow, and color transitions to offer a sense of depth without sacrificing context. That’s the kind of timeless aesthetic I’d rather aim for, one where the viewer can see both the subject and the world they inhabit.

    • @hellobrandonscott
      @hellobrandonscott 10 дней назад

      I'd never say you have bad taste because you prefer that aesthetic, to each their own, just depends on the vibe you're going for. For me and my corner of the wedding world, this ethereal shallow DoF look has always been the ideal, but not everyone of course photographs weddings that way and that's OK too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @Biosynchro
    @Biosynchro 10 дней назад

    Back when this lens was released, Leica claimed that a sliding aperture design allowed higher performance. Not to mention size. If this lens had a constant aperture, imagine how big it would be! IMHO, a zoom lens replaces fewer lenses than you think. A 35-70 replaces 35 and 70, and you can leave out 50. The benefit of this way of thinking is that if you prefer primes, you dont need that many to replace a zoom.

    • @hellobrandonscott
      @hellobrandonscott 10 дней назад

      I actually never preferred the 50 focal length in general. The last one I owned was the Canon 1.2 and that was around 2015. I bought an M6 and the seller sold it with this 50, so I figured, hey I have it now, how about I give it a shot, and now it's probably my favorite lens. So it was a bit of happenstance that I ended up with it. I really love manually focusing though with the tiny M lenses, so though the 50 APO SL is fantastic, I just have this so no reason to get that.

Especially the Autofocus is not that same as sony or any other fast A. I. features cameras. The two most relevant features for me are the phase detect AF and the tilting screen, both of which I can live without. I have never had a problem with the autofocus using the SL-2s for studio portraiture, event and landscape photography. I have found the eye detection to be excellent (almost infallible), and the in-body stabilisation to be amazing. For subject AF (animals, birds, trains, whatever), and fast-moving stuff (like my hyper-active sprocker spaniel) I have other cameras for that. @@_parkphoto Yeah! So three things were noticeably snappier. 1. Pushing play to review a photo. On slower cards this took like a few beats longer. 2. Clearing the buffer much faster when I'm having to do an occasional burst mode situation (people walking down the aisle at a wedding for example). The buffer doesn't even fill anymore. 3. Importing is 2x faster, which really adds up when it's midnight after getting home from a wedding and I just want to go to bed. I have 7 cards to import (Q2 + SL2-S x3), so this makes a HUGE difference.

    Where is a good place to buy used SL2-S or SL?

      TBH in my opinion the best place to buy used Leica gear is B&H. I have a filtered search I make a bookmark for that helps: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=used%20leica&searchType=USED&sort=NEWEST&filters=fct_brand_name%3Aleica

      I love KEH for Leica gear as well. They’ve told me that they rate Leica gear more stringently - such that a “Bargain” grade Leica will be comparable to an “Excellent” grade something else

    Just picked up an SL2-S/35f2 kit at my local camera shop for under $4k. I can use it for 3 years and it’ll probably depreciate less than $1k. Now that the SL3-S was announced, I think you’re going to see used prices of the SL2-S go UP because very little has changed with respect to image output. Oh, and B&H is now sold out of all new SL2-S’s. What SD card would you recommend? Is the card you showed a V60 or V90?

      Congrats! That's such a great move. The card I had in the video is just a V60 and it is more than adequate for the 2-S. I auditioned a V90 before buying a full dozen, and the V90 didn't make enough of a difference to justify the 2x+ price difference. I've been using these (amzn.to/3WnGX5N) since the summer and they've been such an improvement.

      I've owned an M10 and M10-P, which are also 24mp, and they're incredible, but the SL2-S files are just that much nicer. I sold the M10-P to get another SL2-S.

      @hellobrandonscott I have an M10 too. Also a special camera but not as practical.

      Fully true. IMO the only reason now to switch to a 3-S is simply a preference on packaging and form factor, because the images should be nearly identical.
