Recent Finds - A Couple Of Pretty Decent Vintage MTB Rescues
Просмотров 7323 месяца назад
First off, a big shout out to Speed & Sprocket Cycle Works www.speedandsprocket.com for allowing me the opportunity to rescue the 1996 Specialized Ground Control in the video. I am truly grateful. It’s been a minute since my last video. Generally, I would rather be making more in depth, evergreen videos than these more conversational updates. Purely because I don't think that I'm very good at m...

    80's Centurion Super LeMans bar end shifters, got the Jagwire Shimano "universal" 3100mm for the rear derailleur... Perfect fit! (a little long, but clipped easily).Easy install.

    Does this process help braking effectiveness as well? My rims' braking surfaces seem to be worn over smooth and I'm hoping I can sand back the affected layer. Stopping power at the moment is compromised because it looks like whoever had these wheels back in the day rode the brakes hot.

    • @ReferenceBicycle
      @ReferenceBicycle 6 дней назад

      Yes. A fresh surface will improve braking performance. I highly recommend new pads at the same time for best results.

    Im currently trying to get a pair of roller cam brakes dialed in. Im having a hard time with the springs losing tension after a few hard squeezes of the the lever. would love to know how to get that spring back force nice and snappy. I also just sort of eyeballed the orientation for the brake pads. I would love to know a more through approach to setting up these brakes, Keeping my eye out for that video :)

      Thanks for reaching out! Sorry about the slow response. You will definitely want to make sure you’ve got the outer lock bolts tight enough to maintain spring tension once it’s adjusted. They definitely shouldn’t loosen up like that. I do use blue Loctite on those bolts. Finding the best pad adjustment takes some patience. It’s hard for me to explain in detail here, but I typically start with the pad posts midway through the holder, slight toe (just like any rim brake pad), and I do try to keep the pad as close to the spoke side of the rim as possible (since R-C brakes drive the pad toward the tire as it wears). I’ve been busy with work lately, I will have that full video up this fall. I appreciate you staying tuned! And thanks for the comment! Chris

    Brings back memories! I had this model; it was my first "real" mountain bike. Bought new in 1991 when I was 14 and rode it for 5 years until I warrantied the frame in '96. A word of caution, though. As dorky as the front reflector looks, it saved me from certain injury and I would recommend against removing it (or at least the bracket). The reflector bracket has a secondary function to catch the straddle cable and prevent it from catching the front tire if the brake cable ever fails. Additionally, the brake cable pulley on the stem is a poor design with the little brass pulley, as it will eventually fatigue the brake cable, causing it to suddenly fail (this happened to me). Without the reflector bracket, my front tire would have unexpectedly locked on me just as I was bombing down a descent.

      All true! I’m glad it brought back some good memories for sure. Thank you so much for the comments!

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      Cutting them off risks damage to the bars. I hate seeing gouged bars from someone using a box cutter to remove grips.
