Postponed months earlier due to extreme weather, sail training went ahead with a short window of fair conditions but under threat of yet another 'east coast low' forming. Despite heavy continuous rain, the training went well - crew practicing nine 'wears' in a row ie stern through the wind.

Launched in Sunderland England in 1874 the Clan Macleod was later renamed James Craig, among a fleet of trans-Tasman traders out of New Zealand. With thirteen full circumnavigations of the globe and twenty three roundings of Cape Horn to her credit, the James Craig finally succumbed to the rise of steam and was abandoned as a hulk in the secluded waters of Recherche Bay, southern Tasmania. Interesting to see the chain on the brace pennants; on the ship Balclutha they were only used on the six topsail yards. The rest used wire there. Nice work guys. TM

I think it was 1968 when our Sydney ocean racing fleet was hit by a northerly gale on the way back from Jervis Bay. I was in a 32 footer and we (and many others) took refuge in Eden. The surprise and delight for me was finding the tiny whaling museum and the history of the Killers of Eden - an orca family that teamed up with the whalers in their rowing boats ( shades of Moby Dick) and helped them to catch whales. Wonderful pics of a great restoration. She will certainly rock you to sleep. My mate John (Chink) Longley was the project manager on the Endeavour replica in Perth. Keeping history alive as an antidote to all the cash and carbon BS.

Capitalists destroyed sailing, money corrupted the soul of sailors, designers... Keels that are raised on the windward side, enormous size of sails, side wings for lifting the sailboat out of the water, sails so big that masts, cables suffer to the limit... Materials lighter than a plastic cup... And all this for just one regatta, so much money spent that next year the constructors are releasing new models. I love sailing, I also sailed on a two-year-old America Cup sailboat, the sailboat is unusable for further regattas, the materials and the hull are worn out, it needs a lot of repairs, the new owner simply cut it up and took it to the plastic waste. Luckily he didn't pay much. All that money for just ONE regatta, disgusting... Better to give money to sick children, old people... Everything is good as long as we are healthy, when we are broken by illness then there are no rich sponsors, we are not followed by television, helicopters or this mass of dangubs staring at these unattainable space assholes. Greetings from Europe.

Canting keels and movable ballast helps. They don't actually reach full power until they start heeling, that's what they're designed to do.

Its a big event every year for Sydney. Thousands of people are watching all from all around the harbour and on TV.I have been one year on Boxing day ,and the shores were packed with people. Its once a year and takes less than an hour to head out to sea. Then the yachts are on their own with one or two helicopters with cameras. The helicopters are from TV Stations. The fastest yachts get to Hobart in less than 1.5days 630nm.All good fun and spectacular. no need to be a party pooper. the harbour is full of stink boats 365 days per year.
