"Hemi tick" Fixed.

So my earlier video studio.ruclips.net/user/videozCHCgt8L8wE/edit had a cold start on a 2013 5.7l V8 with four broken exhaust manifold bolts. Lots of people confuse the Hemi lifter tick with broken exhaust bolts. They sound similar but you can hear the difference in this video. There is a comparison at the end of cold starts with broken and replaced bolts. From what I've read, it sounds like th...

    Hello from Cpsta Rica, I have a Dodge Durango 2000 5.9, I0ve replaced the Crankshaft sensor, now I have a ticking noise like this video, close to distribuitor. But when I installed the old one that ticking noise goes away. The only way to get rid of the ticking noise with the new sensor is when I go on reverse? Is there a relearning process? when I compare the sensors they are exactly the same size and config. Please help

    I took my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 liter to a mechanic to diagnose of the driveline was bad or something else was the problem. He bumped around with the bottom of his fist and shook the exhaust and driveline, and he said there was little play in the front driveline, so I changed it out with a new one with a bigger end cap on the differential side, and it fit. The truck sounds great. But last night it sounded a little loud and smelt like unburnt fuel and exhaust. I checked today and bumped around some and it doesn't feel loose!!! Not sure if it has a leak or not on the driver side. There isn't much space to getting those bolts on the 07.

      It was in the shop for 3 days. They had to drop the front drive assembly. Lots of labor but nothing complicated. Hard to get access so you have to remove a lot of parts. I've heard of guys doing it in their garage. Looks like a PIA though. Local mechanic might charge less than the dealership rate. $150/ hour. Plus tax, parts, shop fees.

    • @chrisbarrera2843
      @chrisbarrera2843 4 года назад

      If you have this sound, it most likely means you have a air leak between your intake manifold and headers . The sound is air escaping due to the bolts that hold the headers and the intake together , breaking . The reason it will get quieter once the car warms up or when you accelerate is because when metal gets hot , it’s expands . Thus, making the gap smaller and letting less air out of the gap. Depending how loose the manifold and the headers are, the tick can go away completely when the engine gets hot or just get quieter .

    This is exactly what my 5,7 sounds like (Jeep GC wk). It also makes it sound like there's a hole somewhere in the exhaust pipe when accelerating (kinda obvious, since it's leaking). Kinda glad it's "only" this issue. But the question is, will it cause problems if not fixed ASAP?

    I have a 2014 and it has made the ticking noise for as long as I can remember. I now have 73k miles. I had always thought it sounded like a lifter noise that was there until it got pumped up? 1) are we sure it is broken bolts? 2) If it goes away in 1 minute, does it matter? What harm is being done? Are you telling me that after a minute two metals seal back up? Hmmm? CUBuff - has your noise gone away?

    • @CUBuff2001
      @CUBuff2001 5 лет назад

      Added an updated video (link in the description) after the bolts were fixed. 1. Yes, they were broken. Otherwise the dealership did a $1600 warranty repair for nothing. 2. Although the sound got quieter after it warmed up, it was still there. As the block and manifold warm up and expand, they get tighter despite the broken bolts. However, it still leaks because it isn't sealed as tight as it is designed to be. The gap isn't like an inch wide, more like fingernail thickness but you lose back pressure in the exhaust (and power) while leaking more exhaust because the catalytic converter is capturing less C02 and end up having a stinky car when idling.

      The 5.7l Hemi will always have a tick because of the hydraulic lifters and push rod system. Once they get a little wear after the engine has broken in, the tick presents itself. It won’t lead to engine failure and is normal on a high compression engine with a push rod system (listen to a radial engine). As long as you run a high quality oil and change it regularly you should be alright. For me I always add a bottle of Zmax to keep metals lubricated on cold start. I made myself known to the usual tick. You’ll know if you crack a manifold bolt. At high rpms on the road, the tick will be noticeable, letting you know something has happened. When my bolts snapped, the tick was noticeable when I accelerated hard. I ended up replacing both with performance manifolds with aftermarket hardware. When you get an exhaust leak it affects your gas mileage greatly. The o2 sensors won’t read the correct information and the computer will try to correct it, causing the engine to run worse, and the gas mileage to decrease. I don’t even know why I wrote this whole thing.

    I am about to have this kit installed on my 2013 WK2 Hemi. Trying to decide how many of the 5mm shims to put in each side to have a level Jeep. I noticed in you first shots you had the shim on one strut only. Was that the driver side? My 05 WK Hemi leans a little lower on the driver side and wonder if the 2013 will do the same after a lift. Your Jeep looks like it still sits a bit un-level with the nose a bit lower than the rear. Wondering how many 5mm shims I need on each side to get all four corners at approximately the same height. According to ARB these things are for leveling right and left sides, but people use them to level front and back as well. Supposedly they give 1/4 to 3/8 lift. Any thought would be appreciated! Nice video by the way. Must have been fun compressing the springs...
