It was an FU but it was to his whole “image” from not only his record label, but MTV and all the executives, who wanted him to make the same album that he had done previously that was successful.
This is essentially a popstar, turning around at all the people who want him to be a plastic copy of what he was, and telling them to go fuck themselves.

What makes this song along with George's vocals is the AMAZING bass line by Deon Estus. RIP. He sadly died in 2021. Deon was with George since tge days of WHAM! It's pretty sad that this person(reactor) watching this has no clue about this this.... I feel like she'd be more inclined to talk about Whopper Wednesday.
I'm a musician lead singer for over 20 years myself and I can greatly appreciate Deon. He touched many hearts.
      Here's what some on Twitter had to say about the late great Deon Estus;
Estus played bass with many notable musicians, including Tina Turner, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa and Annie Lennox."
His friends and fellow musicians are sharing their memories of him today: ‘He made everything fun…champagne on ice, frisbee and seemingly endless laughter’," the post reads. "His wonderful spirit and his talent will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Deon."
The official Twitter account for George Michael also offered condolences, saying that he was much more than just an "unbelievably talented" and respected bass player, he was loved and treasured by his family and friends.

I just knew my mom liked George Michael so… When I found out what the song was about, I wasn’t even surprised. My dad even said: “How many people out there thought George Michael was Straight?” 😂😂 it’s like when Rob Halford , the lead singer for Judas Priest came out, people lost their minds!! How can this heavy metal icon be gay?? But none of that lasted long, just like when George came out… nobody really cared cause we loved these bands/artists for the music they put out etc… nobody should care who’s banging who, thats their personal lives.💯

My brother and I were discussing this the other day. We grew up in New Orleans, which was (and is!) a pretty progressive city surrounded by a lot of backwards thinking, unfortunately. That being said, we'd been listening to GM since we were kids (my mom and aunt were both huge fans) and always understood that he wasn't entirely straight, if not a closeted gay man. As an adult, I don't understand how anyone can listen to the lyrics of One More Try or Father Figure and think a straight man wrote those lyrics. (I'm not knocking straight men, I'm married to one, lol!)

The jacket that is set on fire, exploding jukebox and guitar are from "Faith" music video.
As people said he wanted to get away from the media at that moment, but the label was pushing him, so he gave them a video without his face. Another of his music videos where he sent a message to Sony, is "Fastlove", where you can read on headphones that girl is wearing FONY!

From what I've been led to understand and from what I remember. This song was more a shot at his record label, which I believe was Sony. George went through a huge lawsuit with the record label for his independence and control over his music from them. He ended up losing the huge lawsuit he had with them. He refused to appear in the video because of it, which is why you don't see him in it. The lost lawsuit set his career back several years.

So correct. This was George giving Sony the middle finger. He was tired of Sony putting him in this box where his image is what sold his music. He didn’t want to be that image on MTV any longer. He wanted his music to stand on its own, because he saw himself as a songwriter. He was no longer willing to sell his soul to a record label just to sell. I love the George so much. He was so brave and stood his corner with conviction. He had the top supermodels of the day in this video. I remember correctly he was the first to have a black supermodel in a video.

George (not his real name) became such an icon and it's difficult to appreciate how he didn't get left behind in the 1980s 'rush to the future' ethic that seems to have utterly deserted the pop world in the last 20 years. Stuff in 1990 DID NOT represent what was around a decade before. But Conservatism is good y'all...

George caught a lot of flack being a white artist who crossed over and won a couple R&B awards with the album, “Faith”. So his next album was “Listen Without Prejudice. It was a lot deeper. He didn’t want to do the traditional promotion, just let the music speak for itself. This is why his picture isn’t on the cover and the supermodels are lip syncing in the “Freedom 90” video. He wanted to shift from the image created from marketing “Faith”, plus after going nonstop since WHAM!, he was exhausted and wanted a break. Sony UK was willing to try to find a compromise, but Sony US was having none of it. They basically told him to do as he’s told because he’s under contract. So George sued to try to get out of his contract. It got really ugly. He lost the suit, but David Geffen contacted Sony and basically said, “You won the suit , but he’s never going to record another thing for you again so let me buy his contract.” So actually this song is more about the freedom he wanted from his label, although I’m sure him wanting to come out was mixed in there too.

George was unhappy with his record label/he wanted more creative control, and I read/saw in a documentary that he actually was unable to record/produce any new music for FIVE YEARS while he was struggling with them…
So him not appearing in this MV himself has something to do with that situation.

You were right that this video had a deeper meaning, but you GOT THE ACTUAL MESSAGE WRONG. While George Michael did come out later about his sexuality (bisexual with a much stronger preference for men though) & you could see the song applying that was NOT what the song was about!
This SONG & ESP. with the video (which is actually KEY to his message) is about HIS TALENT vs. HIS LOOKS!!
Some of the key lines of the song are (I may not have them 100% right): "When you shake your a-s, they notice fast, some mistakes are built to last. That's what you get. That's what you get..." This was a DIRECT reference to one of Wham's earliest (if not THE earliest) hit videos/song that they had - "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." I don't think that you have reviewed that one yet & it is (for this song alone, never mind seeing the START of George Michael & Wham) one of the most important to review...(& enjoy, if you forget this song.)
In THAT video, George Michael & Andrew Ridgeley are very joyful & carefree as they are making it in the music industry & that joy was a huge part of why that song & video were SO popular. The OTHER reason - which is TIED TO this joy is that George Michael is so joyful, he is so full of dance that he just lets loose with the dance moves. Back then it was really only Latino men who were loose enough to really move their hips & shoulders in a full & joyful way when dancing but George Michael had them met IF NOT beat. Add those dance moves to his looks & us girls went CRAZY for him & Wham (along with their music) & the music executives took notice! After that, the music executives FOCUSED on George's looks OVER Wham's music - BY FAR.
(He again mentions in this song about getting a "brand new look - for the boys at MTV" - in order to entice the female fans watching those MTV videos further. He also concedes that in the early days he was willing to go along with it as it was part of stardom that he had wanted. After a while however, he got tired of the continuous focus on his looks & wanted the record label to know that HE HAD TALENT TOO & NOT to focus all their attention on what he looked like! They didn't want to do that & were sceptical that his music was good enough to be sold without his looks added in.
THIS song is called Freedom '90 (as opposed to Wham's hit "Freedom" - which is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SONG) because that is when he was supposed to be at the end (out of) his record contract - so that he could RE-Negotiate his contract to focus BACK on his music - instead of his looks.
In this song you hear him saying that - "I don't belong to you & you don't belong to me" - referring to himself & his record label at that time. You also hear him asking them to believe in him (ie. in HIS MUSIC) & when he sets fire to his leather jacket & the juke box machine, those are setting fire to his old image to start fresh.
He tries to make his point EVEN CLEARER by NOT ONCE being IN this music video (TO BE LOOKED AT!) (The male that you see briefly is NOT him. Instead, the video focuses on some of the TOP supermodels of the time (which is why you recognized the blonde - Linda Evangelista since you would have seen her & probably all the others on the covers of various fashion magazines & [esp. perfume] advertisements.) THESE women DO get paid for their looks! He tries to say (sucessfully) with this video that even though he ISN'T IN the video that it will be successful - because of HIS MUSIC - & it was!
Now go review "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" - to see where it all began. Don't worry, it IS okay to drool over him there. We all did - & remember he was okay with it back at the time of that video (it's just later he realized the record label was no longer believing in his music - only his looks. Us fans ALWAYS liked both!)

I really liked all of George Michael's music , but, was not sympathetic to his self inflicted plight. Nor am I sympethectic to anyone's insistance upon shoving their sexual preferences in my face. It is none of my business what anyone's sexual preference is, I don't ask or care, so do not make it a mandatory issue that I must accept or agree witb. Keep your sex in the privacy of your damn bedroom & off public display, like I do.
George started with WHAM and was present in the direction that his musical career traveled the whole time! No one replaced him with a look alike double in his music videos.
He agreed to and participated in the deceptive publicly portrayed image of himself. He sold out & knew straight away that his true sexual preference and its' image would not sell, profit and would not gain him the massive acclaim that he received by deceiving the public!
The labels that he recorded for were out to make money & they knew how to make it. If George Michael wanted his free expression of his sexuality preference, to dominate his work, he should have stayed in his own lane and accepted his results.
He cried and whined against his record label company & blamed his homosexual imprisonment & forced restraint on everyone but himself.
You don't lie to ppl for years, deceive them into believing you are one character w/ one set of values & later, after they have bought what you fraudulently sold them, expect cheers and ice cream?
Because he had $ & had now, accumilated enough fame, notoriety; & made enough money off of his lie & he decided that his victims are going to hear & know that he deceived them because the deception is profitable for their desires & view of him, but, he now had enough financial profit to make himself feel better. He couldn't get his feels in public & have it leak to the to fans through media. He deflected blame to his record label and projected blame upon the ppl/fans/consumers, so they are at fault & so they are forced to like & agree with his deceiving them & thereby, will see him as a victim instead of remembering that it was him, who really made them his victim?
He expected them to see him as the victim & accept his truth that he knew, from the beginning would play a determining role in his introductory sales. That's why he lied & hid it from ppl when he chose to deceive everyone from the onset .because he had a choice from the onset. The very first time he had to play along, all he had to do was pick up his balls and gothefeck home!
I don't have sympathy for any of these fools that think they have the right to force their sexuality in my face because I like their singing talent?
Or any other talent or skill that they have that drew me to be a member of their audience.
I assure you that I am not, nor have I ever been, in any pornographic audience to view someone's sexual behavior or preferences, so why would any musical artists or others try to force it in my face & make me agree to uplift their preferences, accept it as morally right & be supportive? That is fine if you told me all of this and then I signed up for it.
But I will not be deceived by a lie and then manipulatively, forced to accept the deceptive ploy, deflection of blame that transforms the guilty deceiver into a victim & excused from any consequences, uplifts their lying & justify their behavior as behaviors, as if, I think it is right!
Heck no. George found out that some ppl hate liars. He resented his fans & record labels & cried about his right to his homosexuality.....meh. It was all about his compliance to deceive the public. That is what the public had a problem with!
He made up all that shite in his head & refused to be accountable. All he had to do was be fecking honest. He would have kept the fans who loved his voice & didn't give a shite how he got his rocks off, as long as he kept it private and out of our face.
I completely disagree about the brave description! He was deflecting blame & claiming that he had to fit into a mold to be accepted. No he didn't. He had to lie to profit because his self display as a heterosexual, single man was the image that was massively higher in profits and much more lucrative for him than his real image. When he had plenty of money, he wanted to go out to make a fool of himself by publically demonstrating sexual antics with men but he couldn't be seen & risk suffering public back lash & regection.
We are all free to practice all the evil that we desire.
But, no one is going to force me to uplift what they see as right in their own eyes because they refuse to be disciplined by unchanging truth, upon me or because they lie to themselves & play the, "I practice that behavior & I like it so that makes it good, right, and true & you are not allowed to say that I am wrong"! Bullshite!
If that were true, a liar is good, a murderer is just expressing themselves & making themselves happy! Their reasons for murder are true for them so my truth that says it is wrong is not allowed to convict their truth because it is true for them & truth is subjective.
    Yeah. Nope! 🤣🤣
So, even after George played out his tantrum, blame everybody game so I can be publicly gay like I want to, and he suffered all the consequences for lying, (not for his sexual preferences), you can read about a few more of his sexual shananigans where he continues his same entitled to be a victim, selfish behavior where he still believes that he can practice his sexual acts and preferenced choices wherever, with whomever & in the view of whothefeckever he likes, no matter if those who are exposed to it want to see it or not.
I like his singing talent & wish he just kept it professional. Selfish, emotionally controlled thinkers are control freaks. They won't discipline their insatiable feelings and excercise self control. Since they cannot control their self and feelings, they try to control everyone and everything around them & demand that all comform to fit their desired demands.
You all might believe their bullshite & your own, but I don't care about feelings. They're temporary, always changing & no wisdom is or ever was derived from any decision that was made based upon feelings, their demands or their insatiable desires.

Truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth.🙄
I don't define myself by what others think or say to me or about me, therefore, I don't comment for likes, dislikes or replies.
I am very empathetic when it involves a real victim. This was not the case.
      💪

      You're welcome.🤣
I don't care about my feelings or yours so, your sarcasm only served whatever feeling of your own that you were comforting.😎
And I don't need to know someone personally to analyze their speech & behaviors.
      It isn't rocket science! 🤣
We all suffer in some form or fashion!🤣
But, I always look to the Holocaust & see that suffering as the most deserved of empathy.
It always reminds me to get out of any poor me feelings. An attitude of gratitude is a sure cure for any misery.
It isn't difficult to weigh a self enabled victim status against a real victim status when you understand the difference between thinking with feelings that are temporary, insatiable & lie vs thinking with absolute truth that is not subjective to emotionally based feelings.
There is such a thing as being a victim because one bases their decisions upon their selfish, temporary feelings which are the cause & effect of their consequential behavior.
There is also no solution in saturating that person with more empathy, (they blame everyone & everything else & have so very much sympathy for themselves already), instead of, giving them the necessary conviction of truth that requires their own accountability & teaches them to critically think with logic; instead of their emotionally controlled thoughts derived from their feelings so that they learn how to take back their self control.
Instead of being emotionally controlled & impulsively reacting to their feelings' demands with the same self defeating thoughts & dysfunctional behaviors, they can critically think, discipline & control their emotionally out of control feelings & prevent being a victim of their own self created circumstances again!
I'd rather be hurt with the truth than deceived by my own lying feelings or manipulated by someone else's complicit lie that serves/soothes/comforts their own feelings.
Put it on a shelf if you don't get it. It may help you later. Or perhaps we had this conversation & it will help someone else who reads it later.
It is difficult to admit that we are our own problem & the greatest enemy that we have to conquer is our own emotional thoughts derived from selfish feelings & their insatiable demands.
After all, everyone thinks that their feelings are their friend.
They're not. They are deadly, destructive & deceitful.
They must be disciplined & controlled & they're lawless.
Every crime & every destructive behavior is the result of an emotional thinker who would not discipline & control their own temporary feelings, their emotional thoughts that were derived from them & the demands to comfort & sooth them.
Empathy is not the solution. You don't solve a problem with the same thinking that created it.
Pointing out how the destruction came about, helps someone else avoid it.
