I’ve always said he was a super smart comedian. Fahim is pretty good too 😉
Saying "he doesn't have IT" might just mean the IT they're looking for for that role, and not IT as in general. Rick might be reading a bit too much into that. Santino is basically playing a caricature of stereotypes and the others are more realistic and believable so they are more moving for drama or emotion. Santino's is great for silliness which I love both aspects.
Black Lady Sketch Show was so good, so much better than SNL sadly that show only lasted 4 short seasons. Wish it had kept going. The creator of the show, Robin Theade is working on a new series for APPLE+, "Disengagement".

I think if improv was more familiar to people in general (and got more advertising or something), people would be more into it. One issue is that the kind of improv that most people will ever see on stage is like some college troupe at their college or the local bar who aren't that talented and the show is just ok, at best. Then they decide that they just don't like improv, and never seek it out again. Or hell, maybe they listen to one episode of Comedy Bang Bang but it happens to be a less-exciting episode (or just isn't particularly funny - or maybe gets a little too "weird"), so they just assume that's what it's like in general and never bother listening again. I love Comedy Bang Bang (Rick should go it some time), but I'll admit that there are tons of gems but then also tons of "meh" moments, and I can see why someone might not like it enough to keep seeking it out.
I think most "laypeople" aren't even aware that a bunch of SNL cast members (who they maybe love) came out of the improv scene, and thus, if they like that kind of stuff, they would also probably enjoy improv in general. But overall, I think there are usually some unfunny moments that occur when people can't think of the funniest possible thing to say, and that probably turns off some of the audience.
