If you think Cromwell was cruel to the Scots, see what he did to the Irish, who were Catholic and especially hated by him. His treatment of the captives at Drogheda is particularly horrific. His real surname was Williams and he was of Welsh descent, but he clearly felt no kinship with his Celtic cousins.
Good observation! Hard to imagine someone with Celtic lineage being so brutal to the Irish, and Scots. Drogheda was awful! On today's standards, he would be in the Hague. The history of the British Isles is so rich, I'm really looking forward to the new TV drama Kings and Conquerors on 1066. I think it's on terrestrial TV, and it looks like they've done a nice job with it!
a very simplistic view to imply his methods were barbaric, read some history from anywhere across the entire european continent during that period and you will find that EVERYONES methods were barbaric...!
You're absolutely right that brutality was widespread across Europe during that period, but acknowledging the universal nature of violence doesn’t excuse Cromwell's actions or diminish their impact on Scotland. Historical context is important, but so is calling out specific atrocities and their lasting consequences. Pretending it was "just how things were" often oversimplifies history and undermines the suffering of those affected.
Me, wealthy? More like the guy mucking out the stables! I’ve learned more from life than books, but both are great teachers. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I appreciate it!
