After fighting with my cameras not showing up because of the camera VLAN I originally setup, I found this in the upper right corner. There is a "Can't find your device" option and at the bottom of the list "try advanced adoption". This allows you type type the ip address of your camera (under the VLAN), user name, and password and boom...It;s in!
Usually with a lot of systems like Hik and Dahua etc, the detections are done on the cameras themselves then passed onto the NVR, you can get a few NVRs that do this locally, but it is usually limited to half a dozen. It would take a lot of processing power for a UDM to be running detections on multiple 3rd party cameras.
Yep that’s what I have done the line crossing is set on the Hikvision so it’s done by the camera. Trying to link that to Protect is what I haven’t figured out yet.
@@home.network.solutions the detections are usually proprietary I would imagine, can't imagine there being interoperability there, onvif feed is one thing but complex alarm triggers is another.
I have a bunch of Night Owl cameras connected to their own NVR and that NVR is connected to my Ubiquiti switch and Dream machine. But it cannot find them. And I have 2 Kasa cameras, it cannot find those either (I see that yours do see Tapo ones). Do you know why that might be?
The cameras are probably getting their IP from the recorder. You should be able to see the recorder though and the Kasa cameras. I’d find their IPs addresses then try the ‘cannot find my camera’ option and input the ip addresses manually.
Most likely your night owl NVR creates a separate DHCP network for the cameras. If the Night Owl cameras are onvif compliant. You should be able to physically disconnect them from your nightOwl NVR. Plug them straight into your ubiquiti network POE switch. If you want them recording to both the UniFi system & the Night Owl You may have to re-import them to the Night Owl under their new IP address that they will be given in Unifi.
I watched the official UniFi update video they released and when they talk about ONVIF support and show a screenshot of hikvison cameras in Protect, it shows “-“ in the Last Event column instead of a time. I don’t think they plan on allowing detections or notifications unfortunately. I hope they offer a licensing model to get full capabilities from 3rd party cameras.
I hope they add notifications, even if it’s a paid feature through a license because unifi cameras are extremely disappointing when it comes to specs, very poor image quality, would rather use Dahua turrets.
UniFi cameras are actually pretty good, just a lower resolution, generally speaking. Each group set has its advantages and disadvantages. I like the simplicity of all the UniFi stuff, but I like the functionality of dahua

Hi There, I notice that you have OS V4.0.19. I can ony upgrade to 4.0.18 and it doesn't have an option to Discover Third-Party Cameras. Can you send me the link for the 4.0.19? It seems that Unifi is not officially publish the 4.0.19 version. Please help.
Yes surprisingly the DS-KV6113(B) does work on Unifi Protect despite the fact that it doesn’t always work with other onvif compatible NVRs. The issue has always been that it doesn’t allow you to add an ONVIF user account but Unifi can use the admin account.
Unfortunately, right now, the ONVIF camera needs to be on the same VLAN/Subnet as the Unifi Protect App. I believe this will be changed in a future EA release
@@taylorgates6980 Even with a newer release, you would have to have a UI or cli access to the cameras to tell them where the protect server is. So a way to do it FROM the cameras TO protect. I do that with most of my unifi cameras where I login into the ui, then I tell it where the protect server is via IP or FQDM. This all works fine, providing you have all the port forwarding or NAT rules. Same for UAPs, I have a Unifi Cloud Key somewhere behind a firewall/network where I opened up the relative ports for unifi to work and connect. I point my UAPs to that name and I can adopt them. The Unifi Cloud Key is sitting in a server room in Mexico, my UAPs are all over the world...
I have HIKVision already setup on Hikvision NVR, do i have to reset the cameras and remove them from NVR before they are discovered by unifi ? I have 6 cameras and non appearing
You are running the cameras through the NVR so they would not appear on the network. If you ran the cameras through the network you could use them on the Hikvision NVR and through Unifi.
Thanks. I've removed the camera from the network and it is now being detected by UniFi however, authentication fails. I have tried everything time sync but it just will not authenticate
@@home.network.solutions Yep, good on that. Now I run a sperate VLAN for the cameras but they don't show up unless I put them on the default network. Where can I change this so that it sees them on my VLAN???
if not then its pointless having the cameras in protect, ill stick to scrypted and HomeKit. right now protect isn't even close even with genuine unifi cams it takes a long time to load I can't see people using protect if its still slow loading and no notification support
@@M0PAX usually ONVIF just passes motion events. Some cameras brands, like ACTI, incorporate people and vehicle detection into their motion event alarms but not all brands do that and not all cameras have that type of built in analytics. You have to remember that there are different ONVIF profiles: G, M, S, and T (for cameras there are others for access control). Often, ONVIF compliance just entails S and maybe T. The profiles are not mutually exclusive and can be simultaneously used. Most IP cameras (but certainly not all such as Unifi's own cameras) I've seen support ONVIF S (which is the most basic video format but should entail PTZ functions, audio in, and certain video features). G supports the retrieval of edge recording, T supports H264/265 streaming and motion and tampering alarms and 2-way audio, but M is where you start getting into event notifications triggers and such. Its up to the manufacturer of the camera to implement the ONVIF profiles and despite it being a standard, there is variety in how some of the specifics are ironed out. Then you have to have the NVR capable of talking to a given profile. Synology for example, seems to do well with G, S, and T. Off the top of my head, Axis and Pelco (which is now owned by Avigilon/Motorola) have cameras that support M. While I'm sure there are others, M certainly isn't as common. But as I said, you still need an NVR that supports M. Without M support, you'd need a custom profile for a given camera model and firmware version in the NVR: which is why you rarely if ever get this level of support. I am certified with Genetec and a few other CCTV systems and they do go through that level of effort but mostly just for Axis and Pelco. The odds of pulling notifications from other camera brands is far from guaranteed.
