Keep Mosquitoes Away... Without Bug Repellent!

  • Like most RVers, we love the outdoors. But when the mosquitoes fly, we hate having to cover ourselves with slimy, smelly, or even toxic (for products containing DEET) insect repellent. Citronella candles and other repellents don't seem to work much better and those expensive mosquito magnets seem to draw them in from all over the place. Summer dinners on the patio can be a real pain sometimes. When it gets bad enough, it's easier to just give up and head inside.

When we're out and about, hiking, canoeing, or other outdoor activities, this technique won't help. But for relaxing on the patio, especially around dinner time, when the mosquitoes are most active, this 100% non-toxic little trick works surprisingly well.
Since we learned this technique for keeping mosquitoes mostly at bay, we've been enjoying summer dinners outside more often, even when the air is still. Since the little buggers are lousy aviators - they can only fly at about 1 to 1.5 MPH - all it takes is a little wind to keep them away. If it doesn't happen to be windy on the day of your picnic, you can easily make a little wind of your own.
Hope this tip helps you enjoy your summer more too!
The piano music is my own performance of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag from 1899.

Welcome! Glad you found us. :) The RV park where this was shot is called Tapadera Estates, in British Columbia's beautiful Fraser Valley. You can get a much more detailed look at the park and surrounding area in the video we put together for a friend to help them sell their lot there. I'll send you a link.

Thanks Dany! I've always wanted to do a winterizing video, but being full-timers, we've never needed to winterize, and don't anticipate needing to any time soon. I'm keeping my eye out for RVing friends of ours to need it though, and then I can help and video at the same time. :)

So glad this worked for you! It doesn't keep ALL of the mosquitoes away, but sure helps a lot (bug repellent doesn't keep away every one either, right?)

The same also works for flies, notice at the Supermarkets there is a high velocity fans at the entrance doors blowing downward, what this does is that the flys cannot fly through it and they remain out, in other words its a shield barrier

You can also try o2cool fans and battery operated fans.

The reason this works also has to do with the fact that mosquitoes are attracted to their animals by the CO2 they exhale. The fan helps to dissipate your exhaled breath making it harder for mosquitoes to find you.

We really hate using bug repellent too, especially those with DEET, which is toxic, but seems to be the only thing that works. Thanks for the nice comment. ;-)

Hi. We've never had one of those bumper waste hose storage containers, so not sure about that one. I suggest checking out the RV forums at iRV2.com. There's a wealth of information from thousands of RVers there. It's free to join and post a question. Very useful resource and someone (probably many people) will surely have an answer.

At least if you're living in the yard without a house, you won't get west nile virus. ;-)

santiboy79 SO gad to hear that you like it! If you'd like to see me play the entire piece (at a more typical speed) at the Las Vegas Motorcoach Resort last year, you can see it here: ruclips.net/video/jkk7W_jM1iI/видео.html
This is the tip of the iceberg. There are ragtime festivals around the country with professional players that blow me into the weeds! I'm a total piker compared to a guy like Frederick Hodges. He is an absolute animal on the keyboard. If you like Maple Leaf Rag, you will love his performance of Lion Tamer Rag: Frederick Hodges plays Lion Tamer Rag

Simply genius! LOL I'm from the mountains of VT where the mosquitoes will carry you off and eat you at their place. I'm going to try the fan thing. Thanks! Can't believe we never thought of it.
