Astra Yao’s entire discography (the 3 songs) is very reminiscent of early 2000- 2010’s Chinese pop / pop ballads. It’s great to me Also Wonderland Reverie being in Cantonese is a bonus- Love hearing Cantonese in mainstream stuff like this
Due to various reasons, the Cantonese dialect is very influential in the overseas Chinese community, especially the older generations. Even some Vietnamese can speak, but with Guangxi variant.

Ever since I started ZZZ it has only been waves after waves of nostalgia. The retro aspect of the game keeps making me go back and reminiscent about the past. Honestly as a 90’s person I would have never thought a gacha game would be making me feel this way. Cantonese itself is very niche in the gacha genre. I personally have not heard of another Cantonese song from another game. So the fact that the devs have included it, makes this both very significant and meaningful. I hope the devs continue to carry on with their passion and do look forward to what the game will bring us in the future.
I honestly think that you have a gold mine of content here [And ZZZ's community as way more chill than Genshins that is steeped in caring about IRL stuff in game and all that nonsense that comes with it]. You can analyze the modern music, and how there's classical influences on it, kind of like how rock and metal are influenced by the structures of classical music. There's a lot to work with here.
The zzz community (and game) gets trashed on by every other gacha community lol. That's why we're so chill. We love our game and community and just want to be positive with everyone 😊.
If I had to guess as to why the community ended up the way it did is probably because ZZZ didn't take off the way Genshin or even HSR did so the influx of players it had throughout the months never got too high to handle. Its the little brother of the Hoyo family that seems to always stumble and struggle a bit when trying to do anything and gets made of fun of by the other kids at school for it. The worst I've seen from people is calling the whole game "gooner bait" but that's just the current day Internet at this point that thinks everything is too gratuitous with its designs. I personally hope that ZZZ gets to a point of overall improvement beyond QoL updates because 1.4 did surprise me
@@6295clone I can agree with that. The only reason I don't play Nikke is because I'm mainly a console guy but I know how well praised and enjoyed it is for it's non sexy elements. Though people rightfully praise that aspect as well

ZZZ is my first gacha game, although I was somewhat aware of the various controversies surrounding Genshin and the gacha community in general. But ZZZ's aesthetic and gameplay just seemed really cool to me so I tried it and now I'm obsessed lol. Some of the best feeling gameplay I've experienced in a while and the music is actually AMAZING. The patches also release insanely fast and are very content rich. I do have issues with the gacha model, obviously, and I do think they hold the game back in many ways but I can't really deny the quality of what's there.
I think this is a healthy perspective to have on the “genre” zzz is a quality game. It’s definitely my favorite of the hoyo big three. This action combat style with the 90s aesthetic is very pleasant on the eyes and the characters are cool.
I do not know much about music, but whenever i hear you talk about it, it makes me love it like nothing else!! Very excited to see more ZZZ music analysis! I really love the music and aesthetics of this game. Thank you from italy!
Zzz has, hands down, the most diversed gacha music I've heard come from one singular game lol. I hope they never stop producing such high-quality music!
Too be honest I muted ZZZ's music a while ago as its moments of great music rarely actually happen in-game. & basically never outside of cutscenes. Star Rail has it beat in that area. Felt like they dropped the ball with the SOC having no rock or metal outside of that one fantastic cinematic at the end. So I just play more fitting music on RUclips or Spotify as I play. Not played this new patch yet. Given the new character being music themed I really hope they do a better job with the in-game music.

The combat stages in chapter 4 (SoC) had different atmospheric metal/metal core/rock songs playing in the background and the final boss fight against Pompey had a really good one at that with great vocals. I suggest you look up the chapter 4 OST and check again

It's funny you should mention Cowboy Bebop, because I really felt a strong Carole and Tuesday vibe from this animation, which was a music-themed anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of Bebop. Love how much musical imagery there is in the MV, from the saxophone rollercoaster to french horn ferris wheel and musical note carousel, and even to small details like Astra hearing music from a cat's growling tummy or from the rim of a glass. The 6/8 waltz beginnings of the song ending in a slower 3/4 wistful melody was also beautiful. I'd love for you to get a singing part in a future ZZZ character video!

I wasn't initially sure how I was going to feel about Astra but she ended up being one of my favorite ZZZ characters. She's so cute and fun and kind, and her confidence yet vulnerability is really lovely. Adore her relationship with Evelyn. I've caught up with the main story this patch and the music is stunning! Idk if you stream this game but I would love to watch you play her quest, partially because of the beautiful music involved. You should check out her album too! It's 3 songs plus instrumental versions/alts. All very good. Love how much you catch about her character from the music. Always feel like I learn something from you in these reactions.
I feel like I'm back in the 2000's hearing this. If I didn't know any better, I might've thought this was an opening theme to a random drama series from Hong Kong. Cantonese pop culture fell out of favour starting around the late 2000s, so I never would've imagined seeing an analysis and reaction to this music without a game like ZZZ.
3:40 I would like to politely disagree with the characterization of Astra Yao as "modern woman" - she is a true, classical heroine, just like a princess from the old Disney cartoons. I'll try to keep it spoiler free. She doesn't want to be the first, the best, she doesn't try to be (in words of a modern Snow White) "The leader she knows she is". She just happens to be all of that because of her natural talent and hard work, though her dreams lies in a different place. Also, she doesn't try to do everything by herself, she asks the proxies to do it. She _does need saving,_ while not by the prince, but rather by her bodyguard (aptly named Evelyn *Chevalier,* i.e. knight in French). To me, Astra is akin to the princess Jasmine: she is sick of her gilded cage, she wants to see "the whole new world", but instead of the lovely thief Aladdin, she has her best and only friend (and proxies, if you choose so).

yes!! so glad you got a chance to check out some astra music. to echo some of the sentiments of other comments here, while i've been loving all of these songs as much as everyone else, her character especially resonates with me as a cantonese speaker. it's so rare to see it utilized when mandarin is generally the default in chinese games/games in general, that it's always exciting to see when my language is recognized, as well. i had such a great time playing through her 1.5 story, i'm excited for you to experience it as well! and hopefully you have some time to listen the music of her other marketing media too, i feel there's a good bit of variety in the tone they each convey, plus you'll get to hear songs in both canto and mando!

I love how you always take something so seemingly simply and then point out how there is so much more than what meets the eye, or in this case the ears~ You always have the ability to make a nice, light, simple little song into something very deep and meaningful; your insight is so deep that it almost seems like a spiritual gift from above~ When you talk about music it doesn't seem to be a symphony of nice melodies anymore, just music, but it becomes a meaningful and universal language with incredible depth~ 💙🦋

I think your point is spot on about the shift back to reality and the resolution of being able to sing to people. But I also think it has some melancholy as well, that the beautiful dream that came before always has to end, and maybe that her actual singing never lives up to the ideal in her head. Maybe that's what she meant by "the illusion will fade"

She went through a traumatic experience as a little girl & music helped her through it. She wishes to spread the healing & comforting nature of music to the world. Which is why there was no big boom at the end. Her music is as soft-hearted & nieve as she herself is. I love the spirit of her character. Though, too be honest, I'm not a fan of her overall. I find her to be a little generic & tropey. Don't like her playstyle either. But I definitely appreciate what they were going for with her. Music has been a comfort blanket for me also. Like I imagine it has nearly everyone. It's a universal language for a reason.

I downloaded it as well for Miyabi because the gameplay was reminiscent of Vergil but lost the 50/50 and lost all motivation to play. What I like from ZZZ and also HSR is that they make these animation more often than Genshin. I just wish they did more of it to show the story.

Good for you, because 'Genshin could never' is real. You can't modify an old Ferrari to match a new Ferrari. It has practical limits.

ZZZ has been nailing the trailers for a while now. The Lighter, Yanabi and Miyabi EP are also absolute top songs with amazing animations.

I think your point is spot on about the shift back to reality and the resolution of being able to sing to people. But I also think it has some melancholy as well, that the beautiful dream that came before always has to end, and maybe that her actual singing never lives up to the ideal in her head. Maybe that's what she meant by "the illusion will fade"

I've been listening to her character trailer song quite a bit, and it reminds me of Seycara's music. And I like your analysis on these things
She went through a traumatic experience as a little girl & music helped her through it.
She wishes to spread the healing & comforting nature of music to the world.
Which is why there was no big boom at the end.
Her music is as soft-hearted & nieve as she herself is.
I love the spirit of her character.
Though, too be honest, I'm not a fan of her overall.
I find her to be a little generic & tropey. Don't like her playstyle either.
But I definitely appreciate what they were going for with her.
Music has been a comfort blanket for me also. Like I imagine it has nearly everyone.

I downloaded it as well for Miyabi because the gameplay was reminiscent of Vergil but lost the 50/50 and lost all motivation to play. What I like from ZZZ and also HSR is that they make these animation more often than Genshin. I just wish they did more of it to show the story.
