Excellent. That was nice and smooth, and takes nice dolly shots. I definitely like the idea of putting together own dolly and dolly track....but here's another three cheap options:- 1) Wear roller skates/inline skates. 2) Put a tripod on top of a chair with wheels, ideally a swivel chair, then you have panning and dolly in one! 3) Use a skateboard.
I see comments about the dolly being ugly. The result is the only thing ppl that watch gonna care about. Not mean comments from shallow souls! Good work guys!
Best home built dolly I've seen so far on the net! you really can't see the difference in smoothness compared to the Konova one lol I will def giv it a try.. it would cool if you guys put a blue print aka drawing somewhere to download..just to see how the wheels have been positioned and at what angle! keep up the good work ;)
I just realized I have most of this already at my house. Since I plan on making short films, music videos, and eventually full-length movies and such, this will be great to practice on. Thanks guys. :D
I film skateboarding and I have a "filmer board" that has big jelly longboard wheels that I sometimes use as a cheap dolly. It works really good if you're filming on level ground, but other than that can get pretty shaky. I'm definitely going to make a dolly like this one.
@neverhood311 I wouldn't mound a tripod to it. I don't think it would retain it's smoothness. You could build a much larger version of it and then put a tripod on top of that, but for this what we do is simply stack things underneath it to get it at the height we want. Hope that helps
The problem I'm having so far is if the angles of the wheels aren't absolutely precise, the dolly rolls right off the track after you push it a few feet. I don't have a drill press or precision machinery to drill the holes for the wheels at the precise angles. Is there some kind of workaround?
@JacanaProductions Not really. The pipes aren't perfectly straight so we're going to see some wheels not touching at certain points. It's not really a concern and doesn't affect the footage. Really just need four points of contact to ensure that we're stable. Nice job noticing, though.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but every time I rebuild this dolly, the rollerblade wheels just won't stay on the PVC tracks. The dolly keeps rolling off the track to the left or the right. What's wrong here?
Thanks for the awesome video guys! We're going to try and start incorporating some of these techniques in our videos. Appreciate it! Thumbs up for you!
@2dphotography Did you try with only 3 pairs of wheels? I mean 4 points are difficult to adjust exactly on the same plane but 3 always work, it's basic geometry in space. Try an equilateral triangle, it may do the trick. That's also the main reason behind the basic design of a tripod.
Haha I'm defo the one with the power tools! Cannot wait to try this. I kinda had an idea similar to this in my head for a while but just thought it probs would take way too much equipment to complete! Sooo thanks for this! I will tackle it and see how it goes :)
Noticed that one of the back wheels did not touch the track - did you manage to adjust this and how? (Gotta love how youtube commenters micro manage / nitpick every detail of every DIY project they see :) )
@aliraqi989 yeah but that means the other wheels support the dolly just enough for a smooth run. but on the other hand in line skates are too soft for the PVC
@unseenocean hehe I love the ideas, the only thing is the tracks of the dolly are for those times when your floor isn't exactly even ;) - otherwise crafty solutions!
The track is way to thick. Use 32mm or even 22mm plastic pipe it'll be much easier to transport if you only have a small car because it isn't as rigid. Keep the length of the pipe to 2 meter lengths and extend them with inserts made from cut off waste pipe. Don't bolt the track to anything it'll be fine just laid on the ground and you can use bean bags to support the track on uneven surfaces. Remember the absolute key here if you don't want this thing to just sit in the garage never being used is, portability!!! If it takes a lot of time to set up and is a hassle to transport from A to B you'll find a reason not to take it with you more often than not. Skate wheels are good but expensive their are cheaper alternatives like rubber twin wheel casters. Or if you do want to spend money for £28 you can buy 4 "U-Groove" wheels with skatewheel bearings in them off Amazon (these are excellent). Mount them using L-Brackets. Or buy one of those folderble dolly's off eBay for £28 and replace the caster wheels with the U-Groove wheels.
Your back wheel got stuck in the middle of the movement, but in general it's one of the easiest and cheapest DIY dolly tutorials I've seen. You're basically spending the most of your money on the overpriced wheels.
Everything ok, but please don't use rollerblade wheels. They are not always perfectly round and tend to deform under the weight of the dolly. Use skateboard wheels instead. They are perfectly round and can bear much more weight without deforming.

+Da Aa I think it's cute
The folding aspect is great, did not expect that.

That looks awesome, Im going to make this at school! I've been trying to find the best design for a DIY Dolly, and this looks just perfect! Thanks!
My friends and I put together a $50 dollar one that does not work or look nearly as good as this. Awesome job!
Great video. I like how it folds up easily.
probably the best DIY slider i have seen, im going to follow these plans when i make, thanks :D
BEST TUTORIAL ON RUclips.
I like the way it folds. Excellent idea.

The shot at 4:12 is very nice. Good work!

Great job! The shots look worth more than $65! Thanks guys
I just build my own like you teach, and It works prefectly! Thanxs!
Awesomeeee ! Any tips on how to connect more pipes together while keeping the track smooth?

Really well done video, guys! And a wonderful dolly to boot. Thanks so much!

to the hardware store tomorrow, thanks! love how it folds! thank u thanks u

3:05 pvc pipe will bend under its own weight. You can not use pvc there and expect it to stay straight.

hey this is fantasic but what if i need longer tracks or a higher camera angle would a bigger platform work?
How did you get the wheels in the exact right angle? I would like to know because i just bought 8 inline wheels.
Thanks guys!
Noticed that one of the back wheels did not touch the track - did you manage to adjust this and how? (Gotta love how youtube commenters micro manage / nitpick every detail of every DIY project they see :) )
I'm having trouble finding skateboard's wheels, could you please suggest a replacement for that? Thank you and congratulations! great video!
@aliraqi989 yeah but that means the other wheels support the dolly just enough for a smooth run.
but on the other hand in line skates are too soft for the PVC
Is there a specific angle or distance im supposed to drill the holes for the wheels?
i love track dollys.. perfect for music videos
1D as hammer was quick laugh. Great video. Thx.
@unseenocean hehe I love the ideas, the only thing is the tracks of the dolly are for those times when your floor isn't exactly even ;) - otherwise crafty solutions!
Making one now. DIY everything going to save me 100,000 by the end of my lifetime
Good work.
Awesome DIY!!! With a few more cosmetic touch-ups these would sell like hotcakes!!
i would recommend going to goodwill to find inline wheels. I always see them there and they are like six dollars for a set!
Congratulations!
good video.
Dope work
It's a Nikon D3s, we also used another D3s to film this video. However now we have moved onto the D800. Did not like the D4!
So nice, i´m doing one right now... thank you guys!
good job but the track should be longer.. the length of the board subtracts from the length of the tracks so u have to add that much more track
what camera did you use for filming the test shots? and how much is it?..
one word: awesome.
I made one today using this howto.. thanks guys!

2:51 what the f*ck does that expression mean?
did you used stabilizer???
Why don´t you use canon for video?
good stuff guys
Your back wheel got stuck in the middle of the movement, but in general it's one of the easiest and cheapest DIY dolly tutorials I've seen. You're basically spending the most of your money on the overpriced wheels.
very nice.. saves money too...
parabéns pelo tutorial....muito bom mesmo!!!!
This whole video was shot on the Nikon D3s.
@ 3:19 back left wheel wasn't spinning?
Nice guys thanks for sharing !
Verrry nice idea.. and usefulll also.
Perfect!, Im gonna try this tips, thanks.
45deg?
can i use my skateboard to be my camera dolly
hey guys, whats the name of the song at 3:38?
@kidmeetslitweed Not sure, but it's just a cheesy apple loop :P
nice...beautiful...
Cool!
wher can i tripod head???you did nt say anything how to do that???
thanks!
when you fold the track, i was "AAAWWWW...SOME"
never cross my mind how to fold and pack that way.
Great !! I like it ♥
Why don't you just cut the pipe in the half horizontaly?
Luv it!
LUV U GUYS ROCK!
Omg this is wonderful ^_^ !
2 Reasons:
#1 I don't have balls of steel
#2 I've grown quite accustom to all of my fingers, I feel like I'd miss not having some of them.
nice
This is smart.
why not we use the skate board as dolly . much convenience
thank you this video my like very good
Mantapp..!!
good
the slide was okay but the video was very blurry even in 720p (i mean the test footage)
they probably do
Hi Boys, if a Dolly has wheels it's not a slide it's a railway,,
When he tests it, the back wheel doesn't even spin
LOL nice job!!

But ... unfortunately ...some wheels don't roll ....
I used my Canon 1D as a hammer.. now it is broken.. :(
Humph..
OR you could use a skateboard
woww! me gusto! :D
All the others call it a slider
I just put my camera on a tripod and taped it to my skateboard
Why Don't We Just use An RC Car And Mount It On the Car
This is smoother
this one was ow-some....pls forward links any other smart things done.plssssssssssssss
'
dont have to put price tag in here,,,
not need it to know
It's better with 5 wheels instead of 8. Simplify simplify.
Hahaha, alright no worries. Thanks anyways guys. Great video btw :)
Drill a hole in your wood and put some nuts..and bolts
