Of course the emotionally stunted Sharran of all people is the one to see through Astarion’s facade and help navigate through Tav’s ridiculous spiderweb love life to get him Tav-style romance-therapy.
I think it also might have something to do with the fact that his romance storyline was progressing faster than hers, so she thinks it would be a dick move to leave him at this point. I think in these "make a choice" scenes the one initiating the dialogue is the character whose romance is less progressed. They speak up when the other character had some sort of important scene because they recognize that now the relationship with the other character is more advanced. But anyway, yeah, when I heard this dialogue from Shadowheart I thought wow, she is an angel, she cares about him so much.
Yes, Shadowheart being oddly protective of Astarion and outright stating it that there's "something fragile beneath his facade" nails it. One emotionally damaged person recognizing the other. But Shadowheart still has a family, even if she doesn't remember them. Astarion literally has nothing, nobody. Of course when stay with him he's secretly delighted but also confused why you did, as he was taught by Cazador that he's worthless. And in true Astarion fashion he proceeds to nearly shoot himself in the knee by falling into his usual routine of mocking his own feelings. Acting blasé and arrogant to test out if you honestly mean it, on the logic that if you stay with him even though he acts like a bit of an ass, it must be true, simply because at that point he'd rather bite off his own tongue that openly show that fragility.
@@TF2CrunchyFrog Astarion romance is really the best and so gratifying in the good ending. Just as you said he has nothing, nobody to lean on. He truly needs your character to show him he deserves love. Making him the Ascendant would only make sense if you didn't romance him and in turn didn't care what becomes of him. Even with that choice he'd be alone, surrounded by brainwashed spawn but still alone nonetheless. There was one dialogue which I didn't manage to get where he explains how he refused to bring a boy to Cazador for which he had to suffer. Cazador stripped him off any self-worth and empathy. I had a scene with Lae'zel as well after I had the post-Araj confession scene with Astarion, she was super chill about it and made me want to properly pursue her in a future playthrough
I fucking love how supportive she is and how much she understands Astarion's true needs. The only thing that I don't like about the relationship system in the game is the lack of platonic content after rejecting a character, like, sure they're still in the party and you can progress their quests, but you get basically no new lines for the rest of the game
Yeah, same. Thats how I felt with Lae'zel after breaking things off with her in Act 2 and fully committing to Shadowheart. Didnt say anything for the rest of the game relationship wise, which is a bummer. Could have been room for more interesting dialogue, or even given a chance to reignite something later on, but alas
I wish you could have platonic moments with everyone; I'd love to be able to share a bottle of wine with Shadowheart at the party, I'd love to stay up late talking with Karlach, I'd love to be able to have a friendly dance with Wyll. Hell, I'll even let Gale show me the pretty stars and duel or watch the sunrise with Lae'zel, or even just hang out in a graveyard with Astarion. I just wanna be FRIENDS with whoever I'm not romancing at the time.

I love Astarion and he's my favorite, but she's such a sweetheart. She could see through Tav and through Astarion too. It would be amazing to have a friend like this, who gives you your personal space, who doesn't judge you and might not be the most positive or stable emotionally, but sometimes these are the people who have more understanding of others' feelings.
Okay, well I like Shadowheart now, not only does she understand Astarion but that’s really cool of her to put their happiness above her own, and still stay in the party.
On our first playthroughs, my wife romanced Shadowheart and I romanced Astarion. I was in awe at how sweet Shadowheart is, how wonderful of a life partner she must be. I'm really glad she has good instincts about Astarion where the others are quick to ignore his theatrics.
0:26 Yep, right there is why I didn't buy it when Astarion said he was okay with sharing Tav with Halsin. Something just sounded off in his voice, like he was slipping back into 200 years of ignoring his own needs and boundaries to placate. I don't even think Astarion was pretending to approve, more like he himself didn't fully understand how he felt about it and just said "go ahead" without sorting through his feelings on it first, but I don't believe he's actually okay with sharing Tav.
I agree. I know people desperately want him to be poly, but he's clearly not. He refuses to do it with everyone but Halsin, even with characters ok with being open otherwise. He's only sort of OK with it being Halsin because he knows Halsin is 100% poly and won't try to steal you. He definitely wants a monogamous relationship, but he doesn't know how to ask for it. Shadowheart actually seems pretty down with being poly, but I haven't watched all her scenes.
He absolutely is okay with it and it's because he knows Halsin isn't going to try to keep you to himself. He's also okay with you sleeping with Mizora. Yes he's been traumatized SH picks up on that but she also doesn't get to speak for him. I gets so tired of people talking about being poly like it's a bad thing. Astarion knows what he's getting into every time, he's not saying go ahead because he's too afraid to say no. If that were the case he would be that way with everyone not just Halsin and Shadowheart.
@Mellie non ascended astarion has no mizora dialogue or it's glitched, so we don't actually know how he feels about it, but it's probably still a "well, as long as you dont leave me...." Every other poly or open option he just tolerates, probably because he himself admits he struggles to say no, and he has a deep feeling of being unworthy of anyone. His first thought, whether you bring up halsin or the twins, is that you're doing it because he hasn't had sex with you lately (pre quest being finished). With halsin, he has no option to say no, and you can't even back out after bringing it up. He can also get upset if you try to proposition a single twin telling you it's embarrassing you're into elven prostitutes. After his quest line being finished, he disassociates during the group sex act after assuring you he'd leave if he was uncomfortable, and Tav is written as a POS who doesn't do anything about it or check in on him. Shadowheart isn't speaking for him, but she's picking up on what everyone else can see: astarion isn't a carefree hedonist. He's not enthusiasticly into sharing, and he should probably heal more before even trying an open relationship.
