    I am from Cleveland, Tennessee. At one time I owned a lawn care business and became acquainted with Clayton Beaty. Clayton was one of the most kind men I have ever known. It was awesome to hear my hometown mentioned on your show. I loved growing up in Cleveland. Met a man in Cleveland that changed my life forever. His name was Jesus.

    Y’all mentioned planting sunflowers! I plant sunflowers in my garden and all around! Sunflowers attract stink bugs and I just go by in the morning and pick the stink bugs off and smash them. Stinks a lot but keeps them out of my butter beans!

    • @nancyplank1651
      @nancyplank1651 3 года назад

      I have also been told to plant sunflowers on the perimeter of your corn crop to draw the stink bugs to the sunflowers and not your corn. I was told by a crop duster that when you see a missing or damaged kernel on an ear of corn, that is where the stink bug has bitten the silk that leads to that kernel of corn.

    I am a pro and been in the industry for decades, my burning question is...are they Felco pruners? I found your products in 2020. So far, I firmly stand behind what I have purchased. Getting ready to start a new homestead video channel. Will have a blast weeding in silence this season with the wheel hoe instead of my mini tiller or a long handled stirrup hoe. Testing some seeds varieties right now. It will be a fun gardening season in the greenhouses, canning kitchen. Love my freeze dryer this past season to preserve the garden and make camping a breeze. I have fun watching you two. Greg has a lot of phrases I heard growing up. Travis, I hadn't heard hiney in years. My newest phrase is hiney high used by Travis in 2020.

    Gardening by phenology- finish winter pruning by the time forsythia blooms.
    In northern zones, cut back buddleia after forsythia blooms.
    FYI, many ag schools/extension no longer offer soil testing. Even the commercial growers must send their samples to an outside lab.

    The hotter the pepper the longer it takes to germinate in my experience. Gypsy, king Arthur, and Tabasco peppers germinated in that order. They were planted the same day in the same brand seed starting mix. Carolina reapers, apocalypse scorpion, and other peppers in that scoville range, are dead last to germinate.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад +1

      We've never had any issues with the stuff we use. The commercial produce farmers around here use it, so that's a good sign that it's good to go. They wouldn't risk millions of dollars if it was likely contaminated.

      It will work for cherry tomatoes, but not large tomatoes. We use it for pole beans and cucumbers mainly and it works great for those. Anything heavier than a big slicing cucumber wouldn't work that well as the fruits would be too heavy.

When the maturity date says 80 days or 75 day 70 or 60 days…. Do I start each of them in different weeks so that they can all mature together? OR Do I just start them all at the same time in the cells?
    I want to can my spaghetti sauce and use the Abe Lincoln (80 day), Box Car Willie (80 day), and the Invincible (60 day) and Tachi (75 day)… Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    What's typical temps inside your greenhouse? On a sunny day, mine will get up there. But on a cloudy day and at night, with no heat source, temps are either same as outside temps or MAYBE 10 degrees higher than outside temps if i'm lucky. Trying to germinate peppers inside on a heat mat now but nervous to move them outside once they come up (Zone 7b). Also have some brassicas that have germinated - safe to leave them in the GH if we're looking at mid 20's?

Do you have any tips for me to have a Successful garden without a greenhouse or heat mats. Thank you and God bless.

      Put them in a warm room inside. Most things should germinate okay without the heat mat, with the exception of peppers.

    Can I plant a succession plot of sweet corn behind potatoes or another crop of corn in the same rows?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад +1

      Sure you could. I might would put the corn rows between where the potato rows were. Assuming you were using 3' spacing on potatoes, that would work perfect because you'd then have 3' spacing for the sweet corn.

    I bought a pack of cherokee tan pumpkins last year but didn't get a chance to plant them. Also bought packs of spineless beauty, Golden prize and rattlesnake beans with plans to plant for a late summer crop. All of these have been kept in the refrigerator in a ziplock. Would you say they would be ok to plant or should I just start fresh?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад +1

      They should be just fine. You might see a slight drop-off from the listed germination rate on the packet, but not much.

    So if you don't have the drip tape to use what would be the best fertilizer to use? Or does it require more of nitrogen or phosphorus, potassium which do you prefer to put on them to help them grow. Ty

    Waiting for my roselle, and cowhorn peppers from you guys. Zone 9b I hope I don’t plant them late.
    May I ask, How soon can I transplant my tomatoes, when my last frost is March 1st?
    They growing so fast, they have 2 sets of true leaves and the 3rd one is coming, I started them on January 17.
    Any ideas why they growing so fast?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад

      If your last frost is March 1st, I would try to get them in the ground a week or so after that. Sounds like you're doing a great job growing them. If they start to get "root wrapped" in their current cells, might consider stepping them up to a larger pot so they don't become root bound and experience a good deal of transplant shock when putting them in the ground.

    Hey guys! Great show as always. You guys convinced me last year to try and rotating some cover crops into my garden. I am planning on some succession planting this year and want to try and get some cover crops in before my later crop plantings. I am in Ethridge TN, zone 7B and I am having trouble figuring out how early I can get some of these cover crops in the ground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Don't know how cold it is up there, but it's been pretty cold here the last few days. Might want to wait until it warms up a little bit to get some decent germination. Winter rye will germinate in pretty cold temps, but it will certainly take longer than if the soil is a little warmer.

    I've been using a small greenhouse I got off amazon and it came with two different covers, a green and a clear plastic. If I use the green cover I assume I will need to harden off the transplants before planting time. Could I get around needing to harden off the plants if I grow all my seedlings using the clear plastic cover or does the clear plastic provide too much sun to the seedlings? Lets assume I properly vent the greenhouse during the day. Thanks!

    Help! It's March 29 2022. I have a 162 tray of Cukes, Brandy wine tomatoes, Summer squash, water mellons and expensive seedless water mellons about March 10. They were put on top of my gas fireplace about 80 degrees and kept moist. I put them under a wall mart all spectrum grow light before they even came up. Germination fine. But I think all are leggy. Even the seedless watermellons seed leaves are 2.5 inches above the soil. The squash are 4 inches. I know I can plant the tomatoes deeper than the root ball but what about the others? The squash fall over and half break. Can I plant them deeper?

    Thanks for the info , especially on the fertilizing. Do you fertilize about every 10 days? And how much 20/20/20 for 1 35 ft row? Thanks

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад

      Every 2 weeks is probably a good target for the home gardener. I'd say about 0.5 lb per 35 ft row per time. You can see how the plants respond and adjust if necessary.

    I’ve never grown watermelons before, on average how many melons will you get from one plant? I want to know how many seeds to plant because I have 7 grandchildren and they love watermelons.
    Also I grew pumpkins last year and didn’t realize how much the vines would spread out, needless to say we had pumpkin vines crisscrossing all over the place. Are watermelons like that too? Do you recommend trellising them? Because of our pumpkin vines getting out of control, I ended up trellising them on our fence and that worked out great.
    Thanks for sharing your garden knowledge, love your videos.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 года назад +1

      Watermelons will vine quite a bit as well. We mow alongside our melon plots to keep the vines contained within the plot. You can probably average 3-4 melons per plant, but that will vary with variety. I wouldn't trellis them because they are so heavy. I have seen some folks trellis the smaller varieties, but they have to use panty hose or something similar to make a sling for them once they start getting larger.
