There is a free open source 3D CAD/CAE software, called FreeCAD. It's been developed slow but steady, I just hope it some day gets similar attention as Blender, it could become a very competitive engineering software.

Karri Koivusalo sadly I have to day Fusion360 beats it hands down and is free for hobby users.

Of course Fusion360 would beat it now, FreeCAD is in very very early development stage. Note I said it *could become* very competitive, not that it is.

Karri Koivusalo It could - but I followed FreeCAD for years now and it is still very rough around a lot of edges. Making a parametric modeler is seriously a heavy undertaking !!!

Well, it's barely usable at this point, but getting a decently sized developer community and perhaps some GSOC love would give the development a lot longer legs.

Karri Koivusalo yeah don't get me wrong I am not against freeCAD but it at this point I think lost the race - as long as Autodesk does not kill fusion or more it a commercial product also for hobby users fusion will have so much more than freecad.
Maybe with freecad they should focus on a stable sketch engine and good solid modeling in a usable UI. Then look at more. It has too many construction sides.

But very few engineers use Blender?

Because they even dont know it most of them. Blender is even most usefull for design, but theres a lot of people that dont know it. Maya, Solidworks, Catia are the standart. They are good but for exemple Solidworks for rendering is very week. You can renderit a lot better on Cycles. Simulations for exemple are lot easier to set up in Blender than Soliworks

Blender has little support for nurbs, which limits its possibilities to just finite element simulations. For other purposes it is better to use tools that help you generate 2D drawings and export the design with the required precision for the manufacturing machine or FEA tool. On the other hand, in engineering it’s quite common to use step or iges to ensure compatibility between tools (both formats are ISO standards).
However, if you want to avoid proprietary tools there are some open source alternatives like BRL CAD, Salome Platform, QCAD, Free CAD... I particularly like Salome as it is a mature software which feels right if you have been taught with Catia or NX

@@hugoantunesartwithblender No major company will ever use this software for professional work. It simply doesn't compare to other CAD software out there.
