The Battle of Ukraine - A Campaign Evaluation

  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine initiated the most significant war in Europe since World War Two, and the largest Russian military operation since that conflict. In a colossal struggle, two army group equivalents have engaged each other in bloody, brutal, high intensity war, one fought on the streets of Ukraine's towns, cities and villages. Despite a widely held belief that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would only last a few weeks the Russian offensive has largely been defeated. In this informal discussion, some of the probable causes for the Ukrainian defensive victory are explored, all within the context of the Russian and Ukrainian strategies for the prosecution of the conflict. It must be stressed that this is simply a preliminary discussion, and the analysis given in this video is subject to change if, when more detailed information emerges at a later date, our understanding of the war changes in some fundamental way.
Finally, my apologies for the poor audio quality.

I said this on another channel, but one of the most critical preparatory steps before combat is getting your troops mentally prepared for when the shooting starts. Troops need to be in the right state of mind to kill and take casualties and remain functional. Russia completely failed to properly prepare the bulk of their forces. By promoting the fantasy of a "special operation" and that they were going in to "liberate" the Ukrainian population, the strength of the defence and complete rejection of the Russian liberators by the civilian population was a major shock. The low Russian morale, the number of abandoned vehicles and the overall poor performance of Russian ground forces is indicative of this lack of preparation. They weren't even inspired enough to maintain their vehicles leading to significant losses through simple breakdowns. On the other side, Ukrainian tractors seem to work just fine.

There was an interesting interview on a American news channel, ABC PBS? with a former army logistics inspector of some sort, he pointed out something about pictures of Russian wheeled vehicles abandoned in fields, he said all their tyres are blown out making them unserviceable, he went on to explain this was a combination result of using cheap tyres and lack of maintaining the self inflation system/tyres.
Could be that maintenance and corruption in procurement is also having a heavy toll on Russian equipment and might also explain the high PGMs failures as well.
Another interesting thing was the analysis of shot down Russian military drones, on inspection they were using cheap civilian sourced parts.

I've read that many Russian vehicles are shod with cheap Chinese tires that oxidize and embrittle very quickly (aka dry rot) and therefore failed as soon as some miles were put on them. This may well be another case of corruption. The treasury may have been billed for Michelins and some general pocketed the difference.

Wow i've just stumbled apon your chanel and the 2 videos i watched were goldmines.
Military stuff is an area of interest for me but not my field so i always have a little doubt for the speaker, but i can see when someone is competent and when he knows what he is talking about.
Your video -not just a video its more a high quality tv level documentary imo- on nukes was amazing.
Man thank you for that work, idk if you are familiar with nuclear and general physics or had to research it, but i have been studying physics for years so i know quite a bit on the science behind. The quality level of your communication blew me away.
I can find phd level educational content far more detaildd then that on yt, and also short videos far easier to wtach and in a more casual way.
But managing to speak in a way everyone can understand of a subject as complex technical and controversial as nukes and still convey the historicity, the phgsocs and the engineering parts without it impacting the quality of the information is impressive. Did i know the physics behind, yes did i know the history and engineering yes mostly but i still learned a ton and more significantly even kf i had all that knowlege and time and everything i wanted could i make such a good documentary ?
    I don't think so

I’d be interested in hearing you go on about two subjects. First, I’ve heard that while, as you said, the Russian Army is highly mechanised, it is also very reliant on railways for transport and logistics, with a lot less in the way of trucks, tankers and other less armoured transports than you would expect for such a large force. Which really hurt them when Ukraine destroyed all the railways leading into Ukraine at the start of the conflict.
Second, I think you could say a little more about the political aspect. I think the fact that the political leadership, from the president and the prime minister and further on down did not take the first opportunity to go flee the country was very instrumental in the resistance being so effective and giving the west the wear withal to implement and stick with such harsh sanctions across the board. Also, it’s a lot harder to deny a request for sanctions, funds and weapons from political leaders who have bombs raining down on the cities they refuse to abandon.

Ukraine's best defense is to: 1. Abandon open terrain which is muddy and exposed to drone/arty/air assaults, 2. Destroy all rail and automobile bridges near the border, 3. Turn cities in to impenetrable fortresses, 4. Use the advantage of interior lines to flex forces to meet new Russian urban sieges.
Russia's best offense is to: 1. Wait until May to launch the attack when the fields are dry, 2. Use fields to go directly towards objectives (shortest route possible) and avoid roads and rails, 3. Defend the Donbass and Crimea, and Assault Kyiv. Ignore the temptation to attack in a multi-axis assault that can't mutually support each other.

Outstanding, considered analysis. I am looking forward to your insights as the war drags on. As an Australian myself, I am also interested in your initial analysis of the recent Solomons' foreign policy debacle. I think your aptitude for the regional campaigns fought in the 1940s forms a neat nexus with your contemporary evaluations of ADF capability (F35B?, Arafura, A2/AD) and this recent development....

Love your videos and analysis. in your video about Australian Strategic approaches in the future you mentioned importance of the long range drones. Interesting that the current government has scrapped purchasing them. How will this impact on your conclusions in that video?

The MQ-9B sky guardian (med endurance, med altitude, armed surveillance drone) acquisition is cancelled, but the MQ-4C triton (long endurance, high altitude, maritime ISR drone) program is still well under way.
The 12-16 sky guardian drones always seemed like a poor choice to me. Too few and too expensive for a platform that would struggle to operate in a contested environment. Also, based on our progress with the Ghost Bat, it is seemingly within our grasp to pursue such a capability domestically in a fashion more tailored to our circumstances.
I also worry about the possibility of political blow back attached to acquiring drone strike capabilities, coming from neighbouring countries who have already expressed concern about Australia's growing regional dominance in long range strike capabilities.

Thank you for your in depth analysis, what part has been played by Ukrainian artillery and armoured forces in the 40 days of fighting? Can the damage done to Russian army to date be wholly due to ATGM 's supplied by NATO and the Soviet ATGMs in the Ukrainian inventory.

The problem is, when you want to fight in a German or British way, you need to train and have doctrines like those armies.
I.e. on the level from platoon to battalion specific capabilities are needed, which are absent in the Russian army.
E.g. a highly trained and intelligent corps of NCOs and junior officers is needed, which is capable to educate and instruct the rank and file troops. Logistics, recon and intelligence, and security are elementary components. These skills can not be taught, in "scripted exercises", etc..
