Interesting way of phrasing. Isn't it amazing how Jesus endured the pain of suffering on the cross plus enduring the pain of all the sins we commit, and had the power of resurrection! So its through his pain and death that we have that very power of resurrection if we follow Him. Really our lives should be devoted to accepting this universal truth and devoting our lives to following Gods will for us. If your statement doesn't make this crystal clear I don't know what will. For all the ego loving philosophical nutjobs!

Just listen to your heart man. You know philosophy is empty, you know God made you special. You're unique. You have a purpose. You have God's moral code written in your heart, not in some book written by an eccentric philosophic loner in the 1800s. Accept God's calling and ask him to help you. He will answer, i'm sure. I've been getting into Buddhism a bit lately which advocates that all suffering comes from desire and attachments. After spending 18 years using weed to escape life and as a result am 40 with no current job, no woman or kids and no career I'm forced to start from nothing but anxiety and depression.
The only hope I cling on to is that we ultimately don't require all those things to find peace. That fighting my demons will set me free and try to live a simple life.

Yeah, the Buddhist attachment thing is another concept I like on paper, but I think it's impossible to translate into reality.
Because you can't actually function without desire or attachment. We're social beings, tend to be task/tool oriented, etc, so wouldn't a life without attachment and desire be a fairly depressing one? Sure, you'd have nothing grounding you, but you'd have no friends, no family, no goals either.
Or is it an acknowledgement that life is some amount of suffering and you're trying to control that suffering?
So, like the down-going stuff here, it comes back to: OK, that's a nice idea and is easy to understand, but how the heck does one actually apply it?

I understood this at around age 19-20 when I first encountered Fight Club. It put words to thoughts and feelings I already had. The way I see it, Tyler Durden is a personal character. As in, we all have our Tyler Durden, the person that’s left once you strip away the money, the job, the car, the big house, all of that. Who are you without those things? And once you know who your Tyler Durden is, there’s a peace that comes with letting go of the rest of it.

"It's only after we've lost everything, that we're free to do anything." I think part of the quote is also the Nietzschean idea of shedding our burdens as the Camel, and confronting the Dragon Thou Shalt as the Lion. We carry all these burdens, kind of like what you mention with our fears and anxieties towards change, and are too afraid to give them up, the Narrator in Fight Club's Ikea nest, all his possessions, and transform our lives into a more authentic and life affirming way of living. Also, makes me think of Jung's theory of Individuation, the idea that we must almost "kill" our old selves for our new self. We must accept the shadow to experience complete transformation. "A coward dies a thousand times before his death, the brave man dies once." I love the Bukowski mention. His poem "Roll the Dice" is probably my favorite. "Go all the way... it might mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, your job, and maybe... even your mind... you will be alone, with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire" A few of my favorite lines. Bukowski was very Nietzschean. Only after losing everything can be build ourselves up. Anyway, love the videos, great real life applications of Nietzsche's philosophies, especially since he never gives the answer outright, and makes you find it, which is why he's so great. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid? ' 'That is the only time a man can be brave,' great work as usual brother! The spirit of Dionysus lives...

Yeah, all that losing everything nonsense is the last moment before you splatter yourself over the local landscape, not the key to your freedom. When you've got nothing it's hard to do anything except whither and fade.
The world will assault you with platitudes, like nobody ever regrets not working enough on their deathbed but you say fk it and get on with enjoying life everyone despises your lazy, selfish arse. You gotta grow a pair if you want to get on a do what you want to do. People will hate you whatever happens, they look down on your failures and envy your successes so fk 'em & just do it. Of course, throwing yourself into the void is no guarantee of success. As Samual Clements said, the harder I work the luckier I get. I would like to have seen more on the social aspects of this.
We are social, and while it might seem like there is a purely authentic self in there that was not created by the values we pick up from the culture and company we keep, that's not really a simple thing. We are affected by others. Our dreams are built on the symbols and visions we have that are influenced by other people's values and art. We are social. An important part of the down-going is figuring out the difference between what you want to be and what others want you to be, and figuring out whether this is really about a totally self-contained identity, or about social status and how others perceive you, about externalizing it.
It sounds actively hostile, but I think a lot of young men just want to be able to look in the mirror and see someone they respect, and the world is a funhouse mirror, so how they are perceived matters. That's why they go to the gym. That's why they care about appearances. If that's shallow, then all our relationships might be shallow and who we dream of being might have less substance than we think.
You can't just take for granted that who you want to be is obvious, you have to know the depths of who you are, and understand how that situates itself in the world. Self-improvement is a feint. It looks like transforming yourself according to your own values, but it pulls that trick because your values and society's values are usually mixed into your current sense of self. It might be possible to separate them, but maybe we won't like seeing that, because maybe, when we get really honest, we will find that who we really want to be is dark and others can't just play along with it while continuing to do their own thing. The current utilitarian ideals took for granted that we could be everything we want while also being ethically good, but what if that's not possible? We adapt to the world, but we can also change it, and with real honesty, we might also find ourselves having to decide how much we are willing to impose ourselves on others.
Nietzsche didn't shy away from this. We might hurt other people in being our highest selves. We might see real conflict. We might disappoint, might burn dogmas that others liked or needed, might challenge and disrupt and make life harder for other people. We internalize to avoid that now, but should we? It's a genuinely tough question and it's real social philosophy, which very few people actually do.
Still, this is a good video and I liked it.

The video is about being more selfish about individual interests, while stop caring about the tribe perspectives and demands...that would have a pretty bad collective result, societies would fall down (like currently they are, about birth rates and mental health, e.g.), and ideologies like feminism/red pill seem to drink directly from Nietzsche's words, as much as most the modern society.

However in the age of social media and the internet it’s easy to see why people fall into the trap of not taking action while mentally masturbating to motivational speeches and inspirational stories. Rather than doing this I’d say the first step you should take is to just have your own experiences and not worry so much about other people.

@iulic9833Maybe it’s the vanity of keeping up with others or the lies about how good or bad our situations really are upon honest evaluation of them? Focusing on the truth of what is really happening within us is the only way to grasp onto something real and really do something for ourselves (and that is scary), because we have to give up who we are pretending to be or settling for (just to get by and be safe), and do something more authentic instead which constantly requires killing the person we are (shedding our skin) as we consistently placate and distract ourselves as inertia settles in. Maybe like a more thorough and frequent “Spring cleaning”.

Self improvement wasn't really for our "happiness" but rather for our own comfort so that things are easier/smoother the next time we encounter them, it's the same with money which doesn't bring happiness but comfort according to Rabbi Manis Friedman. We train ourselves in lifting so that the next time you lift those gallons of water you won't be so exhausted next time, we read about our interests and work so that when chaos comes we'd know how to deal with them without being crushed--all in all, seems to me self-improvement will remind you that failure is inevitable, but what you can do is mitigate and delay the occurrence of failure (learned this concept from Dr K's advice on curse of ADHD lol).

He just says that the path to get there might be that you need to start by going down before you can actually go up. You need both, A) improving on yourself, building, and B) a breaking down of what is wrong with you, breaking your vices, (and C) exploration, a broadening of your horizons, gaining wisdom to know what should be changed, what should be kept, and what should be regained.)
Broaden your vision, then refocus your goals. Add material, then refine it. Build your tower, then remodel it. Rince, repeat.

‘Lasting happiness is only stagnation in reality’ - I’d argue this kind of “happiness” isn’t true happiness, but comfort and complacency. People view happiness as an unnecessary pursuit but I believe it is the evidence for everything you’ve talked about. If you can sit back at the end of the day and truly be happy, you’re probably doing some things right.

I downwent by leaving a 5 year on and off terrible relationship and I got into a 4 year undergraduate degree in music that right now feels the biggest sacrifice I have to endure. While it is absolutely rewarding, it is also arduous and mentally frustrating. I have no time to give to in a proper relationship, therefore the sacrifice I have undertaken, yet to me this was one of the second most empowered moves I have ever done in my life.

Thank you so so much for this video, had I not seen it I would not have changed my life today. I took a huge leap by confronting my abusive and cheating girlfriend for 2 years, now my ex.
I was so scared, I had spent so much of the day just thinking about how to do it, thinking how she would react and everything. I even thought about just waiting until tomorrow (again). While distracting myself I decided to watch this video as it was recommended to me and it made me realize that I just had to stop being scared of the plunge, and I did it. She belittled me for it, tried to rationalize her lies but I stood firm and faced the harsh reality of the situation and my action, further exposing her for the manipulator she is.
And even though I now feel drained and lonely, and will probably have nobody to hold for a while, I also feel extremly liberated and confident. And whatever regret I might have, will not be worse than the torture I had to endure when I was with her. This morning I cried out of sadness because of my broken heart, but now I'm crying out of happiness, it's over, I'm free, I'm actually free. She's not controling my life anymore. I can be happy and be myself

This comes off as a response to self improvement not being edgy enough. Self improvement is about doing uncomfortable things ie. ice bath. The argument that people who look to self improve believe “let me ice bath and meditate so I can be happy” is just as applicable to a down goer saying “let me torture myself and hit rock bottom so I can be happy. They’re both, in their entirety, submitting one’s own self to the hardship and humility of self-discipline.

In what way has your life actually become better? What actual risks have you taken? What have you achieved? It just sounds like you are showing how your life decisions fit into Nietzsche's philosophy to trick us and maybe even yourself into believing you are doing good. Incredible video. There's another character from a tv series which embodies this nietzschean philosophy: Rust Cohle from true detective season 1. Highly recommend checking it out since it relates to nietzsche's thus spoke zarathustra and fight club.
Also, really impressed with part 3 that you included about Dionysus. Most people don't cross past examining Thus Spoke Zarathustra but the Birth of Tragedy is incredibly insightful too

    • @TheShanky2000
      @TheShanky2000 9 месяцев назад

@nooblifter390 you can google it, will give you a better explanation but I'll say a few points that Rust opens in the show with embodying Schopenhauer's philosophy of pessimism and counteracts his beliefs by behaving in an ubermensch-ian way, how hes willing to sacrifice himself for solving the murders.
The “time is a flat circle" quote is from Nietzsches' ideas of eternal recurrence.
He also follows the moto of living dangerously and give your spirit dangerous liberty but guards the heart.
The idea of solitude and other people being a prison is an idea of Nietzsche that he seems to be embodying.
And of course, the stuff he says about organised religion.
And his sense of strong duty despite his fatalism.

A one good example of a down-going is Harry Potter. In the last book, everyone else is protecting the school and preventing Harry from confronting Voldemort and meet his death. But after learning about the truth from the Pensive, Harry then knows the path he needs to take. Your channel is Godsend my friend,
I have been literally a warrior ever since i was 5, i was beaten and bullied every single day, at school and at the neighbouring area, i was given a swirly in a pile of feces, thrown in big garbage bin, and many things you can imagine,
At the age of 10, i started boxing so i can fight back, when i became 11, i beaten up in front of the school one of my bullies who was 15 at the time, at the age 11 again, i met my best friend, me and him are only children and he was bullied as bad as ne and he didn't know how to fight, at the age of 14, me and him created our own clique just to survive the teen years, then it was 4 years of street fighting, me, him, and a bunch of others who were our people, i was more of a meathead, a jock really, he was more of an egg head, a booksmart person, so we were pretty compatible, he was the brains, i was the muscles plus i have ADHD, which i was not diagnosed until the age of 18, then i joined the army for 3 years,
Now im 27, and i was looking for a channel like this,
Im still best friends with my friend, 16 years and going, and until today i still box, and taught my best friend boxing,
And my life is going for the better now, started a business degree now, i also work full time for 5 years in the same place,
your channel is exactly what i have been searching,
I wrote this essay so i can show everyone, that self improvement comes by itself, and that you should never give up,
    It will come by itself.
    Keep grinding kings,
    We will make it,
    God be with you all.👊💪✝️☦🙏

Maintaining high mental and physical fitness in life takes courage and dedication. It is much easier to give up than to keep going. Same with ice baths, improved nutrition etc. the more you do the more you notice all the negative effects of your limiting beliefs and bad habits are... anybody who has truly pushed themselves toward a goal knows that.
Nobody wants to get up in the morning and have a cold shower. It takes a continued belief in your own worth to do hard things like that consistently. That's the mental battle and it's the harder one.

Thanks for the clarification on the phrase. You do a great job breaking it down. It sounds like you're saying to grow, don't look within, but look outward and face that which you fear most. This is a good way to develop lasting motivation. Find an obstacle, challenge, goal, or burden bigger than you think you can take on... and then start fighting as if your life depends on it. This orients you so that all those things you would be doing for self-improvement because necessities for your survival. Put yourself into positions for adventure.
These are all great lessons but the greatest challenge is finding ultimate purpose. I like to find mine in "finding the biggest rock I can and then attempting to lift it". That is, find the biggest burden/hardship facing people and then learn to lift it. This is what it means to give up one's life for another. My warning is "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?". Be careful not to become the madman who destroys the world in an attempt to save it.

"Wake up early! Cold shower! Grind! Hustle! Make money! Be the best!"
Why? Get up early? Waking up early means nothing if we both accomplish the same amount of work hours in a day. I just choose to wake up later than you. Cold showers? That's only a mental training exercise to train your brain to face uncomfortable situations. Make more money? Sure. But money is only a means to an end. It's merely a tool meant for obtaining what you want. I care about financial comfort and generation wealth, not making millions before the age of 30. Be the best? I only want to be better than the me of yesterday.
Self improvement is an endless rabbit-hole of never believing you're good enough unless you hit an arbitrary checklist of things that random people on the internet say you have to do to be a "real" or "complete" man.

    • @joeyBOOSTED
      @joeyBOOSTED 3 месяца назад

Well said. If someone wakes up at 5 and goes to sleep at 9, that’s 8 hours of sleep. If someone wakes up at 7 and goes to bed at 11, that’s 8 hours of sleep. I’ve said that for a while. I would say one benefit of waking up early is the reward of being alone- others aren’t up (I have roommates), so you can read, study, workout, etc without anyone bothering you. Although, if you have discipline it shouldn’t matter anyway and you make it happen. I agree with you-financial independence is extremely important, but it doesn’t necessarily mean every person has to hustle 24/7 to achieve it. Life pretty much comes down to simplicity- find what you love to do and do those things. When we focus on checklists created by other people we lose focus. So, just do what you love. I’m still working on implementing this but Confucius said it well- “Life is simple, but we insist on making it complicated”.

I did that when I left a comfortable life in San Diego in 1994 and moved to Osaka Japan to teach English. While life wasn’t always a bowl of cherries during those 5 years I lived there, I can’t imagine my current self without that experience. Since we all have a limited amount of time on this hunk of a rock, we might as well live life with gusto in the way that Ernest Hemingway did.

Now when you're in a shitty situation, of course it's going to smell like shit, this is common sense. But this video seems to be talking more to those who may be relatively comfortable. They have their basic needs met. Food in the fridge, roof over their head, a job, but something isn't right. They are avoiding that desire that wants something else because they want the comfort instead. It's the path of a coward.

@@tubsy. I was thinking just like you back then. But no. Your mind manupilates you and lies to you constantly. "If i get that job i'll be happy" "If i get rich i'll be happy" "If i get that nice car i'll be happy" etc etc. None of those will make you happy. The richest countries in the world have the highest suicide rates. Happiness and meaning are illogical things in nature, logic cant lead you to those, only your heart can.

Interesting video, but your analogies seem to confuse the issue. Similar to the Tyler Durden quote you used up front, I have no idea what the difference is between mastrubatory self-improvement and a down-going.
I'm 50lbs overweight. Is admitting this is affecting my life and committing to the gym mastrubatory self-improvement or a down-going?
I don't have the best relationship with my partner. Is leaving her my down-going or is it an escape from my problems so I don't have to face them?
It's the problem with making philosophy videos like this that extend beyond concepts. The concept of a down-going is easy to understand, but the reality is MOST people struggle understanding where to start the reflection, because things aren't really that cut and dry, and, frankly, the heart DOES lie and it takes work to peel back to find the truth.

Suggestion: I'm pretty sure Odysseus deserves his own video and you're the one who can do justice to the man.
