I happened to find Kenny's videos and the rest is history. I'd like to give him a virtual hand shake for that. Thanks again, Kenny!
I totally agree. The first time you use it, you feel lost because Reaper has no visual bells and whistles like other DAWs, but once you get acquainted with the interface, you realize you can speed up your workflow much more than with any other DAW. And it's very low demanding on PC resources, leaving all the CPU power for your works. Great tutorial, Kenny, just as always!
A few years back I was using Cubase 7 Elements to record a project with a student and my elicense glitched (again!)... I couldn't open Cubase and my student was set to arrive in 10 minutes. Remembered about Reaper, and out of desperation downloaded it. Had it running in 5 minutes, and was able to do the recording session with my student; I was shocked how easy it was. Have used Reaper since and never looked back didn't even bother to get Cubase working again. Reaper runs as easily on my 7 year old HP laptop as it does on my beast desktop, and it has NEVER crashed on me! The price for a personal license is a steal! Reaper...clean, simple, very very light on the cpu and memory yet does everything you would expect of a full fledged daw. And...no other daws get such detailed and easy to follow tutorials from Kenny
That was a fantastic overview! The only thing I would’ve included is how you can create a marker that you can jump to and if smooth seek is selected, it makes it really easy to come up with lead or vocal melodies and be spontaneous with your arrangements. I used to have to move everything and then copy and paste (fearing something might go wrong and not paste over). Now between the markers and the region options, I can quickly test out ideas and then drag them around within seconds. I had purchased FL studio a few months before I discovered these things about reaper and now it’s just a piece of software sitting on my desktop that I have no use for. Reaper rules!!!
In a Behringer XR18 Facebook group, when I asked what DAW that was "easy" to use, yet I can grow into, the overwhelming response was Reaper. And of course, the price was right! Kenny's tutorials are amazing for getting a 'noob' like me started in using the software.
Have had Reaper since 2008, but I recently found Studio One is actually more powerful except for Ambisonics. A lot of people are ignorant about other sw and think what they are using is unique.
We've been using Reaper a couple of years now, and it just keeps getting better! 'Grows with you at your own pace, and is ready for anything you decide to throw at it. Great video, featuring very useful info. Thanks!
Reaper is the best DAW by far, it's a revolution. It's not the standard for every studio in the world only because old engineers and producers just don't wanna try something new.
it is too complex for beginners imo ... if I started from Reaper I would've been very confused, in order to wield the power of Reaper you need to know what you want.
Different DAWs shine in different areas, for sure. If I was a film scorer, I'd probably spring the grand for Nuendo. That said, the "standard" that the dinosaurs can't seem to get away from is arguable the worst possible DAW you could ever want for anything. I can't think of one thing it does that something else doesn't do way better. Except for drain your wallet, of course. What really kills me are the guys who have been using REAPER for years, but still pay the Avid tax "just in case" they need to access an old file or collaborate. I know guys who haven't even launched that old DAW in over two years, but they keep on paying.
Been using Reaper for many years. Always learned a lot of stuff from this channel. You will too, if you're heart is in it. Thanks, Kenny. Reaper 6 is just simply awesome.
One thing I would add, is that after Freezing a track you can then add more plugins which effectively come after the ones frozen and invisible. THAT is powerful and I've not seen it anywhere else.
Why Reaper? I also use it because it is compatible with all my old vst instrument plugins. I created a totally oriented template Abbey raod series with the theme redd 37 51 as well as the abbey road plugin suite of waves audio, it works wonderfully with my discreet audio antelope converter 8. it's been 5 years that I use reaper and I'm still not at the end of my surprises .Reaper is just a wonder !!!
I've used and owned SEVEN other major DAWS over the past 15 years and I still had to watch this video twice to wrap my head around how unique it is. Many of the functions mentioned are available in one or more other DAWs (usually only one other) but these are the things I noticed that no other DAW I know of can do. --Portable Installations: Multiple!!! installations of Reaper on the SAME machine that can be run at the same time! --Huge number of settings and actions... over twice as much as some DAWs that already allow control of thousands of actions. --Changing mouse modifiers... not sure any other DAW does that --Any type of media on any track: MIDI, mono audio, stereo audio, video, etc. --Automation items with names --Sub projects --Side chaining / routing any audio to any other audio --Powerful MIDI routing that's relatively easy to use compared to other DAWs (Logic) that can do similar routing P.S. Pretty much only excellent DAW marketing managers (and people at media outlets like SonicState) would have time to keep track of all the latest features of every major DAW so corrections to my list are welcome.
for me the clinker was the ease of slangin wave files around, chopping them, reversing, gluing, pitching, bouncing.... all of that stuff... I come from Sound Forge sound manipulation background so that was the killer for me, it LOOKs like a wave file editor sometimes I dont think other DAWS look that way (this is demonstrated around 5:20) nice work here!
Kick ass content. I'm an old Tascam user from a couple decades ago. Tried messin with a pirated version of pro tools using an MBox I found on offer up. So freaking complicated for an old man like me. Heard about Reaper from Glen Fricker with SMG a year ago and love it. Found some usb drivers to make it work. Recently bought a Behringer umc22 that I connect a couple pedals to. I get really kick ass sound I'm happy with. I dont feel mentally fucked using reaper as I did with pro tools. I still have an issue getting good sound pre record using ir's that's why I opt to use pedals.
Auto color, parameter modulation, 64 channels per track, anticipative FX processing, cycle and custom action, scripts, routing flexibility, project tab sync play, web control interface, input FX, real time resampling, monitoring FX chain, drag and drop everything, integrated bridge, rock solid, DCA and pre fader DCA, independant pan laws per track, snapshots, ...
I'm a 30 year old man that has always loved music. In my teens I learn to play guitar and bass and have been playing ever since. One thing I always wanted to do was record some music, but a good quality recording, not the low quality I was doing at the time with phones or webcams. I had tried in recent years other DAWs (free versions or the basic versions) and always felt disappointed due to the limitations and having to spend lots of money on the better versions (money I don't have). And then I found Reaper which is amazing and affordable! But I must say that the main reason Reaper is such a great DAW is because of you as an incredible advocate for the program and teaching in a great deal of detail in a very understandable way. You are the cherry on top of the cake for Reaper! :D keep doing such a great job :D
I LOVE Reaper. I use it primarily for mastering and audio editing/sample pack creation. The things that keep me using FL studio for composition are the piano roll and midi tools such as the 'scale levels' tool as well as the step sequencer. The sequencer in reaper you mentioned is cool but after trying it, it's just not very seamlessly integrated into the workflow. It'd be great if it automatically created and reserved tracks for mixing and if I could create separate patterns for individual drum sequences. In FL, I like to make each sequencer pattern specific to a drum group (eq bongo sequences in one pattern, kick snare on another, hi hats and cymbals in another) which I can then mix and match later to create my compositions.
Did you know that you can use FL Studio as an inserted VSTi on a Reaper track? That's what I do because I also love the MIDI implementation within FL Studio, but hate pretty much everything else about it. When you insert FL on a Reaper track, you just click the little fruit icon on the window that comes up and it opens a window containing FL which you can then add VSTs to and write MIDI, which is automatically piped to Reaper on that same track.
works fabulous on persistent USB MX Linux., self-contained install. i can't use it with VST's though, except the included Tyrell, which i like a lot...
I originally got Reaper just for voice over, and I would love to see your editing process for setting up and mixing a voice over file, either for narration or character acting.
Next month, I'll kick out ProTools MP9, It's a light version of ProTools anyway, and they gave me zero discount to crossgrade to a full standard license. So Reaper charmed me many times, especially how you can route tracks, makes it very versatile. So you guys have a new costumer. And thanks Kenny to put me over the line. Another thing, I'm done with dongles, which always fills up my USB ports. Thanks again.
I like to play old midi song files from the web,I use a quick toolbar icon I made which deletes all the cc data so I don’t get mysterious playback issues with program data.
Huge thumbs up. Just the size of the download alone is worth it. So simple, yet does so much. I don't think it's a "poor man's Pro Tools", I think it's better. Been using it for more than ten years.
Hi Kenny, another great, informative video. I'm new at this and just bought me a macbook pro 16. Main concern for me is to figure out a system for dealing with only a 500 gig main drive. The big challenge is to create a functional system of, I think, storing plugin libraries on an external harddrive, and creating a template that run on an external ssd [eg I got me a 500 gig sandisk ssd] while running reaper of the main drive off the macbook as to save space on the hard drive. I , for one, need guidance as to best practices and methods to make this happen in a way that is cost effective while ensuring that reaper software runs smoothly. Any chance of creating a video on how to make this happen since I'm sure a lot of people will benefit from this !
That was a very well put together overiew of the advantages of Reaper! The only thing I miss is an Ableton / Bitwig style clip recording mode - being able to record any length of clip alongside other audio clips of varying lengths and have them loop playback is great for sketching out ideas, especially when jamming / overdubbing guitar parts for example. It's also a good way to store recordings that don''t take up space on the main project timeline until you're ready to use them. Other than that, Reaper kicks every other DAWs butt - at least for me that is!
Kenny you’re the main reason that i am using reaper. In case you would hv not Made reaper video tuitorial I would hv left reaper within 2-3 days and never look back again.Using reaper since 2016.
Thanks Kenny! Reaper should become the industry standard. The only reason I open PT now a days is to export the audio of a session and bring it to reaper.
EVERYTHING I like very much. I will give it a try maybe next December that I've got time, but I was also thinking of trying Digital Performer (from MOTU). Onlly thing I would like, if I will be watching it all day and sometimes night long.... couldn't it be more nice looking!
Reaper and my Behringer X32 desk have been central to my studios heart. Super reliable, cost effective, feature rich, and it just works! Reaper user since it came out.
Just when you think you know it all, Kenny drops like 10 more mind blowing capabilities that Reaper has. Reaper really is insanely good. Everyone thinks it sucks because it doesn't hold your hand, and is free, and the interface is a bit dull, but it's amazingly powerful, efficient and leightweight.
Please, begging for these features! For Composers: 1) Better (more convenient) integration with Kontakt vst plugin 2) Articulations (not external scripts...) For Sound Designers: 3) We're not given an option to uncheck "Preserve pitch when changing rate" in Media Item Properties as a default setting For Recording MIDI: 4) Retrospective Record (There's a script which I use, but I'd like to see it as a built-in option) Thank you. This DAW was more like a joke at a first glance for many folks out there... now it's the main work-horse, affordable and powerful, with frequent updates and great community.
Best move I've ever made. I've learned more with reaper in a short time which gives me more time for writing. Best Daw no matter what the experience level.

@@inarisound I agree, but I started on reaper. If you are the type that has patience to search on forums and Kenny's videos you can grind it out
@@diogofs25 i think it is the easiest to start recording and mixing, i tried cubase, it was far more complicated to get you going
@@inarisound I don't know, I'm an incredibly slow learner when it comes to learning new software and switching to Reaper for me was quite seamless.
Man Reaper really rules!! As a kid I was equally intimidated as any other DAW, now I like the powerful simplicity!
when I hear something like "oh Fl/Cubase/Logic etc is the best DAW I just roll my eyes and smile
Been using Reaper for many years. Always learned a lot of stuff from this channel. You will too, if you're heart is in it. Thanks, Kenny. Reaper 6 is just simply awesome.
It is the only software (including upgrade) I have ever truly been happy to pay for!
One thing I would add, is that after Freezing a track you can then add more plugins which effectively come after the ones frozen and invisible. THAT is powerful and I've not seen it anywhere else.
Thanks
You can do that in Cakewalk.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Very cool. Never used Cakewalk.
I’m learning new things everyday thanks to your videos, your videos are a godsend.
Thanks Again
My god I am such a rookie.
Wow. lots of great features that i have not use yet. thanks for the tips!
all respect to cockos team !!!
--Changing mouse modifiers... not sure any other DAW does that
--Any type of media on any track: MIDI, mono audio, stereo audio, video, etc.
--Automation items with names
--Sub projects
--Side chaining / routing any audio to any other audio
--Powerful MIDI routing that's relatively easy to use compared to other DAWs (Logic) that can do similar routing
P.S. Pretty much only excellent DAW marketing managers (and people at media outlets like SonicState) would have time to keep track of all the latest features of every major DAW so corrections to my list are welcome.
This is gold. So many great nuggets here.
Totally agree! Amazing DAW!
Love your tutorials, helped me a lot
Really nice overview, thanks! Reaper continues to amaze me years on.
Really helpful and informative video. Thank you
Superb program, wish I understood even 25% of it! So much to learn 😊 thanks for this and your other videos!
Your videos are insanely helpful thank you man !
for me the clinker was the ease of slangin wave files around, chopping them, reversing, gluing, pitching, bouncing.... all of that stuff... I come from Sound Forge sound manipulation background so that was the killer for me, it LOOKs like a wave file editor sometimes I dont think other DAWS look that way (this is demonstrated around 5:20) nice work here!
Reaper really is miraculous. And the constant ongoing improvements and updates just give me complete consumer confidence.
Kenny, You are just plain Awesome. No one explains everything the way you do. That is why I use it.
Thank you
Can’t stop wondering at Reaper - it’s too good to be true! Plus we are so lucky to have Kenny and Jon (the Reaperblog)!
Excellent DAW better explanation! I'd love more content for voice over like radio production. Thanks Kenny
Kenny is my Reaper Jedi.....!!! Invalualbe resource I have learned so much from your videos man.
The Best daw! Thanks for the tutorials Kenny. Saludos desde Argentina!
Best things about reaper are video tutorials by Kenny & others also the community.
I love all daws a great time to be productive
You are great. Thanks Kenny!
Great overview of Reaper features and strengths. Well done Kenny.
Auto color, parameter modulation, 64 channels per track, anticipative FX processing, cycle and custom action, scripts, routing flexibility, project tab sync play, web control interface, input FX, real time resampling, monitoring FX chain, drag and drop everything, integrated bridge, rock solid, DCA and pre fader DCA, independant pan laws per track, snapshots, ...
The video had to end eventually. LOL
That regions feature is great, very helpful for trying different arrangements.
I thought I was pretty good at Reaper but Kenny just slapped me down and showed how much morr there is to learn. Thanks Kenny!
Reaper....you're my only friend
Mind boggling awesome and just powerful...Am very grateful for Reaper Cockos DAW and Kenny should be Awarded the best Teacher on Earth...
@@christravis1357 That's sick. But the real question is can you run Reaper in a Reaper track?
works fabulous on persistent USB MX Linux., self-contained install. i can't use it with VST's though, except the included Tyrell, which i like a lot...
Reaper is the best DAW, period. I have used nearly all of them since 2000. Thanks for everything, Kenny!!!
Wow, I learned something new, and here I thought I'd discovered everything. Good stuff!
You're always great, Kenny! And Reaper is always awesome.
Very well said, exactly my view! And as I'm quite new in using Reaper, I just learned some things in this video - thanks a lot!
Love Reaper. Love Kenny.
What can I say, Reaper is great and bought my license. Kenny is the bomb and what a great teacher. thank you.
bought my second discount license of reaper a month ago, because my old licence stopped with version 4! i love it :-)
Reaper and my Behringer X32 desk have been central to my studios heart. Super reliable, cost effective, feature rich, and it just works! Reaper user since it came out.
Wow! This changes everything!
I’m definitely going to try this out.
Please, begging for these features!
For Composers:
1) Better (more convenient) integration with Kontakt vst plugin
2) Articulations (not external scripts...)
For Sound Designers:
3) We're not given an option to uncheck "Preserve pitch when changing rate" in Media Item Properties as a default setting
For Recording MIDI:
4) Retrospective Record (There's a script which I use, but I'd like to see it as a built-in option)
Thank you. This DAW was more like a joke at a first glance for many folks out there... now it's the main work-horse, affordable and powerful, with frequent updates and great community.
It already integrates well with Kontakt in comparison to a DAW like FL Studio
"Preserve pitch when changing rate" can be toggled off project-wide in the project settings, that helps quite a bit
@@kloa4219 But not that convenient compared to using Kontakt in Logic Pro
@@lokin42 Oh, thanks! That helps
Best move I've ever made. I've learned more with reaper in a short time which gives me more time for writing. Best Daw no matter what the experience level.
That's brilliant 🤘
Just installed Reaper for the first time today. I come from a long-time Vegas Pro background (mainly for video) and this suddenly just feels like home, having battled on and off with Reason over the years.
