I have a 2023 Mazda CX-5 mid-level trim, non-turbo. Your wrap-up at the end perfectly describes what sets Mazda apart, and what I love about mine. Also, for a mid-level car around $30k, I have a premium interior with quality materials; for me that also adds to the ownership & driving experience.
I’ve been a Honda owner for 23 years but I just couldn’t justify the price and styling of the CRV. Test drove all 3 makes and the CX5 was my choice. Took delivery of my CX5 Signature a few days ago and I’m just amazed at how well built it is. The RAV4 was my least favourite. Here in Australia the CX-5 is extremely popular I know because I have one myself and yes the fit and finish is definitely the best of the Japanese brands
CX5 has better interior quality and slightly better handling but in everything else RAV4 wins. It has better reliability, safety, boot space, comfortable back seats, excellent mpgs and the best resale value. And I have seen CRV as well, it looks so roomy and luxurious.

I've just not touched Honda yet because it's costlier. I'm not changing or fixing what's not broken. Nothing against Honda, of course. I believe all are great in their own ways.
I had a 2013 CX-5 Touring for 100k miles and was HARD considering a new CR-V Touring Hybrid. Your video shows all of the reasons why I was considering it so much. When Mazda offered 0% for 60mo on new CX-5s last month, it gave me the push I needed to test drive the Turbo model. I'm happy to say that I'm officially on my 7th Mazda and 2nd CX-5. I went with the 24' Turbo Premium and regret NOTHING. Premium fuel recommended or not, I'm thoroughly enjoying every smile per gallon ❤️ Awesome video for sure.
Great comparison with lots of important information. This video helped me make my decision on which car to buy. However, the constantly moving background was VERY distracting and dizzying.
Thank you so much for this on spot & superb breakdown. You really helped me get to 90+% of my next decision. It's up to the testdrive but I'm not expecting any overtakes. Thanks once again!
There are very few insurance companies that are going to provide full coverage on any of these cars for less than $1,400 - $1,500 a year. I am unsure why the insurance costs over the 5 year period is so low for all of them. Great video!
We got the CX5 Turbo Signature and we love it. Amazing interior fit and finish. Drives great and good power from the TURBO. The ride is a bit on the firm side, but the handling is crisp and sporty.
Great video! The black moving background is a bit nauseating/distracting though. A couple Important points to mention for each model: - The RAV4 is planned to be redesigned next year, potentially addressing many concerns - The hybrid CR-V has no spare tire! - The CX-5's infotainment screen is only touch screen for Apple Car Play / Android Auto, otherwise you need to use the dial Is the CX-50 now a more comparable model to the RAV4 and CR-V instead of the CX-5?
Thank you for the feedback! I think the CX-50 is intended to be more competitive with these models, but sales volume shows the CX-5 still dominates the rest of Mazda’s lineup
In the end, it all comes down to your lifestyle. Whether you want to save on gas, have more space, or get more power out of an SUV. Either one will do you well if it fits your personal needs. I have a Rav4 XSE Hybrid to save on gas and pick up inventory for my restaurant. Wish it had the power of a Mazda but I’ve become more conservative these days with fuel and speed.
Excellent review and well formatted and enjoyable to watch. I would have agreed with the CX-5 if it had a hybrid option like the other ones. I think at that point it would outsell them as well. This is kind of related, but I'm personally baffled why Acura has not launched a hybrid version for the RDX. I think it would dominate the segment if it did.
I like the Mazda's styling and better interior however the game changer for me was getting a hybrid for only $2k more. To no surprise the best choice for a low to mid price hybrid crossover in Canada was the Rav4. The CR-V hybrid is only available in its top trim.
That’s an important distinction. The RAV4 is still better on fuel economy and has a lot more diverse offerings (price, features, and style) for Hybrid than CR-V. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
Just bought a 2024 Toyota Rav4 LE. It was a no brainer. We considered all other vehicles out there. We talked to friends and family and co workers and it was clear to us the Rav4 made the most sense. Yes, the Mazda CX-5 is kind of nice, but I don't really like how it handles and the power delivery just feels weird to me. There's is good reason the Rav4 outsells all the others! Now, my son is buying one!
As a previous owner of the CX-5 the seat bottoms are atrocious and offer no thigh support for anyone over 5.8 Foot Tall. The gas mileage doesn’t come close to the estimates and not having a touch screen? I would definitely not recommend it.
That’s a great question. It depends on trim level and option package. We have a separate Trim Level Breakdown video each of these models where we cover all that information in depth. Thanks!

Great review! If the CX5 excelled more in what I would call the essentials of this vehicle segment (powertrain, mpg, cargo, reliability, maintenance cost) I’d agree; but its currently just to far behind in these categories for me to call it the winner. All other features are great including price but the competition is just to close to having most of those features; I think those essentials I listed above are also a reason why the sales numbers just aren’t close to the CRV & Rav4. Also I think if emotion becomes a main factor the RAV4 Prime delivers in some exciting performance in this segment. A plug-in CX5 with more ample cargo space would be exciting. Great work on the video by the way cool comparison!
Thanks for the comment! Totally valid on your points about where the CX-5 lacks and I think that’s where the age of the platform really shows since it’s been around for 7 years at this point. I think the CX-50 aims to address some of the shortcomings, and I believe they offer a PHEV CX-50, just not in the U.S.
CX5 better fuel consumption 😂 that’s funny own both. Rav 4 wins hands down. Hate the cx5. Side mirrors are awful The rav 4 is so good I bought another. The skyactiv engine is a terrible design that has issues with carbon build up.(engine will heat up and blow the head gasket)The pcv (pressure control valve) is under the intake manifold so a $20 part will cost you hundreds to replace. Oil rings on the piston is weak to help the engine react faster and give you higher power but at the cost of engine blow back. If you could reach the pressure control valve, The engine sensor is worth $450 to replace because you have to take access it. Toyota does not have a carbon deposit issue.

@@toptrims JD Power and Associates are often considered marketing scams (google it and you'll see what I mean). Consumer reports is a better source, but needs a few years to gather data. I trust JD Power and Assoc. ratings as much as I trust Disney with my kids these days.

I completely agree. I wish I could afford that Cx 5 Premium Plus that I have been thinking about... in Jet Black Mica with the Black Leather interior. Some Toyota doesn't even offer. Only Softex fake leather.
My sister have a RAV4 2022 and recently I got a Mazda CX-5 2024 and if want to be frank, Mazda is far better in interior and also dirving taste in most situtions. at the first glance they look very similar but when you spend a day in each, you can feel mazda has different DNA and feel premium
That would be a good comparison. We do have a video on the Forester if you haven’t watched already. CX-5 is pretty class competitive with the base engine but the Turbo will have noticeably more power in all situations
This is a good video but I disagree with the CX5 being the best. The compact SUV class is essentially a soulless appliance category. Under that lens the CX5 really doesn’t do well which likely explains its sales numbers relative to the RAV4 and CRV. Buyers in this class heavily weight fuel economy and cargo capacity / interior room which are things Mazda doesn’t do well in. Mazda’s handling prowess is also overrated since this isn’t a sports car. I doubt many CX5 owners are buying this to take it on canyon roads for fun. I think Mazda really needs to make a hybrid version or else they will really start getting left behind sales wise.
Nice video. One important thing to consider is the wait times on certain models. Mazda CX5 usually has much higher availability even though it's very popular compared to the likes of the RAV4 in Australia where people are on 2+ years wait lists. Oh what a fail Toyota.
I am deciding between crv and rav4. considering rav4 redesign is almost near, should i worry about rav4 resale value when compared to crv and go with crv ?
Generally speaking, both should have far above average residual values. I wouldn’t worry too much about resale being a big issue unless you would be looking to sell/trade within the first year of the redesign coming out. Both are clearly outstanding options, best of luck!
Top Trims, Can you do a review on the Sub Compact and the Compact SUV. Like Mazda cx-30, the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona. I own a Mazda 3 and love it but I need a bigger vehicle now that I need to transport my elderly parents. Need more accessibility with out the bigger costs cause I'm paying for the New vehicle. My Mazda 3 is a 2007 not ready to get rid of. It's still in great shape and I love driving my standard. But got do what yah gotta do. Thanks.
I'm a Mazda owner back when they were great Cars, but when Ford became a part of them Mazda weren't as good, but now that Mazda got rid of them Mazda is great again😊I drive a CX 5 best SUV on the road in my opinion 👍🏿👊🏿🤗
I'm was a Honda fan all my life but recently Honda has been going down hill. I think only the type r is made in Japan. I chose the CX5 for the luxury you get for price and it's still made in Japan. Japan cars are just built with quality.
I have to say that i understand your comparison’s conclusion but i strongly disagree with who the winner is. I believe the CRV takes a unique approach by delicately balancing quality, tech, safety, economy, and dependability. It also wins the most comparisons. Honda has a saying ‘respect the customer’. They do this by providing the most interior space, nearly the best fuel economy, modern tech, and best safety. Mazda takes advantage of a buyers emotions which, in turn, allows them to offer an outdated platform, outdated tech, poor ergonomics, and poor economics - at a similar price. In other words, Mazda seems to be choosing profits over customers by selling an outdated product. Vehicles are typically the second most expensive purchase we make throughout our lives. Saying something should win because it’s ‘cooler’ is not respectful of the consumer.
Your thoughtful and respectful comment despite the disagreement is much appreciated. All three of these are great options and at the end of the day it will come down to the preferences of the buyer which one they feel is better. Thanks for the comment!
test drove all these 3 cars, loved the cx5 but man.. that second row especially the middle seat was just not it.. if they fix that, it wouldve been a easy choice for me on the cx5
I'm kind of torn betwwen CX-5 and CX-50 but I'm almost too late-- the 2024 are CHANGED and NOT as good looking- and 2023s are selling out fast. I researched the others and don't wANT them--- cheap made and have cvt (certainly verified trash).. for transmission-- good to start with- but DON"T LAST...
CX-5 is definitely better value in terms of features but CX-50 is newer design and technology and a little bigger. Also much better incentives on the CX-5. Thanks for watching!
In Europe these cars with same specs cost around 50-55 euros which is around 60000 USD almost double the prices of USA. Can anyone explain why is that?
After i saw engineer video about new mazda hybrid engine and the problems it has as design, i would stay away from Mazda. CRV was next pick for me. Mazda not only has worst MPG but hybrid model engine is jerky and not responsive to drive.
Is that the PHEV CX-90/70 or the upcoming hybrid CX-50? According to Mazda, the new CX-50 hybrid will be a Toyota hybrid system which will be interesting to see
If honda just put a 2.0 turbocharged and 200torque in CRV.. it would outperform those two! I have the 1.5 sport edition and it does get me from point a to b but its hella slow!

I have the Select level 2023 CX5 - very happy with it
What was the total price?
Two Mazda Cx5 household here. I’d get a third but my wife says we’d look boring in the driveway 😂
That’s quite the endorsement! I think the boring part would be a matter of perspective 🤣
wow this is professional, good job guys
Thank you for the support!
Good background music 👌
Thank you!!
It's amazing to me that people still use JD Power and Associates as a real reliability metric.
Always open to different suggestions. What resource do you prefer to use?
@@toptrims JD Power and Associates are often considered marketing scams (google it and you'll see what I mean). Consumer reports is a better source, but needs a few years to gather data. I trust JD Power and Assoc. ratings as much as I trust Disney with my kids these days.
Appreciate the info, thank you for sharing!
Awesome video!!
Thank you!!
I’m all for fuel efficiency. no doubt rav4 and crv has Mazda beat in that category, but driving should be fun and engaging. Life’s too short
You got it, thanks for the comment!
Great comparison and I like the video style. Can u please review 2024 outlander (gas) too?
Thank you! Outlander would be good to cover
Toyota,Nissan,Mitsubishi,Suzuki, and Honda. We’ve owned and tried this brands, but since we owned a Mazda cx3,my wife told me if ever you will trade our cx3 please get the cx5 or any Mazda vehicle… 😊
That’s awesome, thank you for sharing!
I completely agree. I wish I could afford that Cx 5 Premium Plus that I have been thinking about... in Jet Black Mica with the Black Leather interior. Some Toyota doesn't even offer. Only Softex fake leather.
Some other commenters have shared some great deals they’ve managed on the CX-5 recently with 0% interest financing, might be worth looking. Thank you!
@@toptrims I am not sure that I could get financed with my credit history, but it wouldn't hurt to investigate. Thanks.
My sister have a RAV4 2022 and recently I got a Mazda CX-5 2024 and if want to be frank, Mazda is far better in interior and also dirving taste in most situtions. at the first glance they look very similar but when you spend a day in each, you can feel mazda has different DNA and feel premium
That’s great perspective, and I believe many would agree. Thanks!
I would of liked to see the Subaru Forester Wilderness compared to these 3. The only nock on the CX 5 is MPG. Does the CX 5 need the Turbo?
That would be a good comparison. We do have a video on the Forester if you haven’t watched already. CX-5 is pretty class competitive with the base engine but the Turbo will have noticeably more power in all situations
May only be me, but that changing background during the comparisons is kinda annoying to the eyes
Appreciate the feedback!
why everyone compares RAV4 or CRV with CX-5. CX5 is more similar to corolla cross.
Interesting take. How so?
Thank you for the great review! But ni need to forget that the real price of Toyota and Honda very far from MSRP.
Very true, inventory issues and dealer markup are important considerations. Thank you!
Excellent points made, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
The first time handling prowess prevents you from getting in an accident, you will come to appreciate it!
Mazda CX-5 all day
It's a great car
Nice video. One important thing to consider is the wait times on certain models. Mazda CX5 usually has much higher availability even though it's very popular compared to the likes of the RAV4 in Australia where people are on 2+ years wait lists. Oh what a fail Toyota.
That is an excellent point and certainly something to consider when shopping. Thank you!
Thanks.
Fantastic idea, thank you! It will certainly be in the plans for upcoming videos!
@@toptrims Thanks, looking forward to that. Also, best bang for your bucks would be good too. Thanks for listening to my suggestions.
I'm a Mazda owner back when they were great Cars, but when Ford became a part of them Mazda weren't as good, but now that Mazda got rid of them Mazda is great again😊I drive a CX 5 best SUV on the road in my opinion 👍🏿👊🏿🤗
Well said!
I'm was a Honda fan all my life but recently Honda has been going down hill. I think only the type r is made in Japan. I chose the CX5 for the luxury you get for price and it's still made in Japan. Japan cars are just built with quality.
Spot on!
I’m looking to purchase one of this for Uber just want to know which one will be better for that?
RAV4 Hybrid will have best fuel economy, CR-V Hybrid also a good option for that purpose. Thanks!
@@toptrims Booked Rav 4 hybrid
I don’t want a hybrid car I love Mazda style and it is the best for me
Thanks for sharing!
test drove all these 3 cars, loved the cx5 but man.. that second row especially the middle seat was just not it.. if they fix that, it wouldve been a easy choice for me on the cx5
Did you also look at a CX-50? Curious if the backseat room is any better. Thanks for the comment!
For fuel economy, Rave4 Hybrid. For a better driving experience, CX-5. Both vehicles are reliable. 😁
You got it. Thanks for the comment!
Music is too distracting; down vote.
Thanks for the feedback
Import duties
These are considered large vehicles in most European countries (and they charge more bc of it)
Premium is charged for fuel efficiency
That’s great info, thank you!
I love Mazda CX5
Good looking car
Absolutely!
According to Mazda, the new CX-50 hybrid will be a Toyota hybrid system which will be interesting to see
I really want to watch this but that flashing background is too distracting.
Thank you for the feedback
If honda just put a 2.0 turbocharged and 200torque in CRV.. it would outperform those two!
I have the 1.5 sport edition and it does get me from point a to b but its hella slow!
That would be awesome! Although that might compete too much with the RDX for Acura’s liking
Do mazda as resale value for their cars and suvs as compared to honda and Toyota ?!
Generally speaking, Honda and Toyota will have better resale but it will vary by model. Mazda is not far behind
@toptrims brother I was in a cue either to buy toyota rav4 or nissan rogue !
RAV4 would be the best option there. Good luck!
Cx 5 the driver's choice nuf said.
No arguments here 😎
So. Wrong comparsion. Crv hybrid dont have cvt. They calld it eCVT but it not like usual cvt.
Thanks for the clarification!
