my brother lived in the Adirondacks in the warrensburg/shcroon lake area for 35 years and he told me the same thing, that the black bears hoot at night and they are all over the place , that they heard them all the time when camping in summer. I recently went on a canoe camping trip by myself in maine near the south end of Baxter State park near the Appalachian trail/ the Debsconeag wilderness lakes area to be exact. and I saw bear tracks everywhere in the campsites. on my 2nd night I heard the hooting really loud at 3am, it was completely still and quiet , no wind and the 2 sets of hoots coming at me from up the lake. I slept with my hatchet and knife! an hour later around 4am, I heard the hoots moving around my campsite. I had hung my hammock and tarp almost 200 yards from the beach/picnic tables and fire pit area. it had rained very hard earlier so I hoped that would have washed some of my sent trail away. sun came up at 4;15am and I packed up and was out of there on to the water in my boat by 5am! I mean, the beach had bear prints everywhere! they say black bears dont bother people etc, and maine has never had a fatality from bear attack, but as far as I'm concerned they are bigger than me and are wild animals and I'm not taking any chances. I did take a chance in that I did not bring bear spray, or a firearm and I was alone in the wilderness in bear county for sure! I read up about the hooting as well. what ever I heard I was spooked as hell!!! this was a few weeks ago July 1, 2023. thx! my brother and I have been planning a camping /fishing trip maybe to pharaoh lake wilderness area sometime this season!

Hello Andrew. Thank you for subscribing to my channel. Oddly enough my home town is Warrensburg and even more oddly my son and I had just completed a one week camping trip into Henderson Pond Maine, which is just off the south end of Baxter State Park. Pretty cool ya , small world.
Andrew, I’ve received numerous reports and some you can find in the comments of this video of people describing their experiences with hooting in the wild at night. Many of these individuals are convinced Black Bears hoot. At the time I posted this video I was Re-convinced Bears hoot because my Cousin Darin is no lier. But with that said I have continued to monitor the hooting while in the mountains by myself all night long and other than one particular situation, I am confident the source of the hooting is Barred Owls. Only one time have a visually confirmed a Black Bear and while it was on the side of a ridge, I obtained a audio recording of this hooting and it was coming directly from the Bears location. Then the following day I returned to find that a Black Bear had come down off that same ridge and walked the trail I walked out the afternoon prior.
I spent a lot of time researching Barred Owls and it seems these raptors are one of the most actively vocal in my area and are most likely the source of nearly all the hooting calls heard.
I share this with you because I feel bad when I hear folks have had their evening ruined while camping because they were scared thinking Black Bears are all around them when in fact it’s really just Owls.
Black Bears are know to Hoof - Clack Their Teeth - Grumble/Growl and occasionally let loose a Guttural Roar that is not awfully loud.
So enjoy your camping, bring Bear Spray and learn how to use it. God Bless and have a great day.
      SWA

I just talked to Dad (uncle Pat) about this the other day. He still remembers when he and I were up in Blue Mountain Lake fishing near dark and we both saw that black bear hoot near the north shore of the pond. It wasn't several hoots like an owl but one hoot.

Hello John, thank you for your interest in the subject. I’ve since recorded and started learning to analyze audio recordings of different types of animals and birds. Owls, particularly the Barred Owl and have discovered Owls do indeed make a very wide range of calls. Based off what I have learned so far, Black Bears don’t seem to have the ability to generate a hooting call. To date, no one has produced video accompanied by audio of a Bear hooting. Many tell me they are certain they do, tell me they’ve seen and heard it but, most folk are stating what they heard wasn’t an Owl and therefore it must have been a Bear. Coyotes make a single tone call that sounds a bit like an Owl. Still, I have no solid answer so I appreciate your input.

You're right Barred owl hooting sounds a lot like what I was hearing which I thought was bears.
Some Vermonters I met say they saw a bear cub and the mama bear was hooting to call it. As you say , there are no definitve answers. We need someone to record a video of bears making these sounds. Thanks for the interesting video and discussion!

New Hampshire here, I just had a big black bear rummaging in my barn right next to my chicken coop around 9:30PM. After I scared it off 5 minutes later I heard the same hoot sound. I always thought that hooting was an owl

603 Maple Farmer , you are among a select few that can nearly verify Black Bears Hoot. Let’s keep eye wide open and ears sharp with camera and good audio at the ready and if we can confirm this , it changes everything in a huge way. Thank you for your input .

The day after my bear encounter I told a lot of people about my experience with hearing that “hoot” ing sound and most said it was owls warning other owls of a bear presence. I’m not totally sold on that theory cuz I’ve heard from a few old timers in my town that have said the hooting is from black bears. I haven’t had any bears since then and I haven’t heard that hooting sound either.

I live on the BC Canada West Coast and have black bears all around here. In fact they are hibernating (very short time) just up above my home. Black bears very seldom approach humans and are in fact quite shy. I have never ever heard a bear hoot. If they want to warn a person or another animal, they will huff and puff loudly and might make a sort of OOf noise, but definitely no hooting. Also, if you are going into the wilds when it's really cold in Winter, they would all be hibernating.

Hi Pamela , I have researched and entertained conversations on this subject with multiple individuals. No one yet other than my cousin has confirmed a visual encounter including a Bear hooting . Back story on my cousin - top of his class - Super Star in high school sports - Marine Core Veteran - College Sports Medicine and rehabilitations - Head of Rehabilitations at Ellis Hospital then Sunny View - Proud Husband and Father. Darin has never been said to lie . It’s makes it hard for me to think he didn’t see and hear what he says he had seen and heard a Bear hoot. I had a encounter with a Black Bear this summer . The Bear traversed onto a hillside and I was approx 150 yards away when I heard this hooting sound twice and it was coming directly from the Bears location BUT I did not see the hoot come out of the Bears mouth . It was around 3:30pm early summer and the next day I went back up to investigate and there were Bear tracks on the trail where it had followed me out . You can watch this on my video labeled Sasquatch or Bear! So at this time I still cannot myself confirm Bears hoot . The research continues and thank you for leaving your comment . It’s important to the research , thank you

Thank you for your comment Pamela. I have learned Black Bears also make a clicking sound when calling there young. They also will slap a tree to ward off an intruder. I have nearly five individuals whom are claiming they have witnessed a Black Bear hooting. I need to remain skeptical and remain diligent in my quest to answer this question.

"Very seldom approach humans?" Not in Gatlinburg TN. I have 3 to 4 in my backyard everyday and unfortuneately within 10 feet of me more than once. At night especially a problem.

Black bears do hoot when they are trying to call a mate. My dad called one into our backyard one night by mimicing it. I heard it and saw the bear he called into the yard. Those professors are crazier than a loony tune . It didn't take me 10 years to figure out they hoot. They all nneed to go back to college and get a degree in something they all ready know.Who in their right mind would believe a professor over experience. Your cousin is correct. Owls make a whoo whootwho who and bears make a woohooawhoa. I am 71 years old have heard a bear hoot and if one hoots I would just out of common sense assume all bears hoot.

Hello Countryluvbugslady and thank you for your comment. Over the period of a year and a half since my cousin explained to me he and his father ( my uncle Pat ) had both witnessed the Black Bear generate a hooting sound, I have received mixed comments on the subject. Some of the comments, are eye whiteness accounts of Black Bears hooting or in your case, dad calling them in. Myself , I I witnessed a creature that very likely was a Black Bear. This creature fled to a hillside, then after 15 min of me seeking it out, I started walking away and then a very pronounced call came from the hillside during mid day that resembled this hooting call in debate.

I have heard that sound many many times in woods of vermont. Staying at a camp on mountains in pownal. Hoo hoo hoo hoo, hoo hoo hoo hooooo. Must be a lot of owls then. Cause i would hear 3 or 4 in different directions about 50ft from campfire. Unlikely 3 or 4 owls at once. Also owls dont crunch branches. To a T same sound like clockwork every single time i stay there. Has a growl or roll at the end of it. Im gonna try and record it this summer.

OGfromUtube , Thankyou for your comment and I have been drawing closer to recording a Black Bear vocalizing these exact Hoots . I had encountered a Black Bear this summer and at the time I was not at all sure what the set of Black legs I had seen that took 3 steps in my vision but no flexing of the legs throughout my sighting . I thought Sasquatch ? Then upon departing from the area , I heard multiple hoots of this exact nature up on the ridge where it would have made most sense this unidentifiable creature had fled to . Once the call is recorded coming out of the mouth of a Bear , the reasons why this particular Hoot is made will be a great study worth applying myself indeed. I am interested in your results. Feel free to communicate through this comment stream . Thank you for watching the videos and have a great day .

The sound he described is an owl
A black bear doesn’t ask, “who cooks, who cooks for you?” An owl does.
Bears say, “ew who you fool” or “who oh you”

OGfromyoutube , recently I had a chance to witness a Barred Owl make a call that I am very familiar with and it did have the grizzly growl at the end of it . This is the sound my Grandfather told me was the Black Bear. So far the closest I have come to confirming Black Bears hoot was mid summer after startling a Bear or young Sasquatch ( could not confirm the body but had viewed three steps showing straight black legs ) then approx 15min later on the hill this creature traversed up onto , I heard and recorded this hoot sound coming directly from the area the creature should have been . Let me know if you discover any other happenings .

Hello poppy The Cat, the evidence is convincing individuals Sasquatch range from 6’ to 9’ adults and young are as babies up through to adult hood as well. It appears their intelligence level allows them to traverse the forest in a way they hide their tracks and tracks are hard to discover. I recently discovered an impression that I casted as well. It’s very interesting and once I vet the occurrence, I will be sharing the discovery on my channel. Thank you for your support and have a great day

Hi Patrica , Thankyou for the comment . You are right to say Owls Hoot and this is the study of the Owls hooting and what is the other hooting noises associated with the natural Owl sounds . This season I had an encounter with something that had black legs approx 3’ High that didn’t have a bend at the knees while observed 3 full steps . I cannot confirm it was a Bear but I can confirm that approx 10 to 15 min after the encounter , I heard these hooting sounds coming from the same Ridge that this unidentified black legged creature travel up after I spooked it out of a low land swamp area . I turned to listen , heard it again and then one more time as I was further down the trail headed back to my truck . A couple days later , we went back up into the same area and had taken pictures of Bear tracks that appeared to have possibly followed me out of research area 2 . The evidence is starting to weigh on the side of Bears hoot . Again Thankyou for your comment and have a wonderful day
