As easy as it sounds but for these spellers it is actually difficult to spell especially the words in the remaining rounds. It gets confusing because they have to study thousands of word origins, definitions, alternate pronunciations, usage etc. So it's very important for them to gather as much as information before they open their mouth to spell and what's more there's a time limit so imagine the pressure.

A few things for the trolls. First, the national bee has not gotten easier. If one looks at the winning word in previous years, you will see stuff like croissant. It is a random draw and btw palama can easily be misspelled(aka my spellchecker has indicated that I have misspelled this word). Second, in no other year did finalists last 20 rounds. It usually ends after 15 to 16 rounds. The final 8 had 5 PERFECT rounds which does not happen normally. All spelling bees even Nationals have a word list. Those kids exhausted the word list. To put it simply, there were no more words to give those contestants. It was not a "Give everybody a trophy"; it was the National Spelling bee putting up the white flag in surrender. The only way that the bee can be tougher is that they can reduce reflection time from 2 to 1 minute and no questions about root words.
