you make things look easy with all the hoard stuff you have, that lift is a nice thing to have, I built a BAHA bug out of a 58, with the back cut off I could remove the engine with a milk crate under the engine............Oh the good old days, when I could do crazy stuff....Nice job
Enjoy your vids. I just finished getting a 59 bug started that been sitting since 1988. Its fulfilling to me to start and finish a project no matter how small. To take something thats been discarded and get it going is always a good feeling for me. I for one appreciate the time you take to make the videos. Thanks MG
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! My starter is hit and miss weather its going to turn or not. Have replaced the starter, battery, wiring, condenser, ignition lock.....and its probably just the bushing. Of course the starter came with a bushing but I figured "how the heck do I change that?" So it ended up in the hoard.......Thanks again.
I almost destroyed a new starter by "testing" it outside the bus because I did not know it needed a bushing to keep the shaft straight. I was happy to see you explained that for everyone!
Recently found and subbed your channel. Back in 1982 I became an overnight VW mechanic when the Ford dealer I wrenched for bought the VW dealership and combined them. I wish I had access to you back then! Great videos about what really goes on in the real world of mechanics! Eventually I will probably view all your videos, the cold start after years are great! Thank You!
i swear man you have a gift to take things that are left for the junk yard and you bring them back to life you are amazing man! i enjoy watching every video you make. when that bug is done it will be awesome! keep it that same color don't paint it a different color
Man I love the air cooled VW engines. I used to have a bus when I was a kid. Can't remember the vintage, but it was originally 6 volts. It had a newer motor in it and was converted to 12 volts. Just couldn't kill that thing. I pulled the engine once to replace the throw-out bearing and discovered that someone had repaired the broken clutch cable many years earlier with a pair of vice-grip pliers. They were rusted solid but they still clamped the ends of the cable together! I replaced the vice-grips with a new pair and it was good to go! :-)
That motor sounded real good, Had a 1962 or 3 in Germany with a roll-top and semaphore turn signals drove the piss out of it, the nice ting about it was you could find anything you need in the the junk yard real cheap, this was 1973.
So, I remember where I know this car from. I know the guy who painted it. It was done at Paul's Auto Body on Rabbit rd in Salisbury I also still have a bike with the rear half the frame the same DuPont Purple paint that was left over from this project. It's a variation on some of the Ford Splash purple pickups. I was doing some side work there in the mid 90's and this was one of the projects that was going on. Small world after all.
+mustie1 if for some reason you did ever decide to, that paint is surprising easy to match/blend. But I'd paint it a different color before I did that lol..
Burlats de Montaigne I would if it was in a more secluded spot, I would have taken it months ago but the neighbors wouldn't let me until I talked to the land owner..
Hey, at 25.04 you clean out the mouse nests. I had to come back and watch to find it. I was going to pop the motor out next weekend and do this, but I see you did it. Awesome..
That engine sounds sweet! I think you've got a winner there. At one point I thought you were going to end up on your ass holding that muffler in your hands L.O.L.
No no no no. You're right, It did sound like that's what she was saying to you. Once running, it did (as you said) Sound Sweet. Purring like a kitten ready to go go go go.
very nice brother, she's just waiting for someone to show her love. great work my friend, you should see the bed for the model A i got, it's Haad-cooA!! cheers
Ahh the dragon is alive :-D And you are professional, well i think so :-). Even through the camera it sounds nice, no nasty sounds and no misfiring, its the first start that allways seems to be difficult, too much damp sitting in the engine perhaps. I would have been wrong on the starter, i thought the main contacts of the solinoid were mucky and not connecting the power. lol wrong polarity battery, i suppose there were early versions that were positive earth and later converted, can be confusing lol.
I once used a red cable for the ground side on my truck. the parts store didn't have it in black and because I know myself all too well I painted that red cable black. it was to become a part of my battery pack tray. ( multiple battery start for cold winters ) the main truck battery can be down to about 3 volts and the starter solenoids will still kick in as the starter solenoids are powered from the batteries in the truck bed and not the main truck battery.
Well a leash not you're doing when you fix these Volkswagen's up nicely in everything I enjoy your channel and keep on doing what you do man that's all that's what it's all about you know keeping people happy and then watching your stuff I enjoy it they call me cowboy but my real name's Eric talk to you soon that
Enjoying your videos - love the common sense approach to doing things, very refreshing. Do you have a video that tells more about your lift? I'd really like something similar in my garage, but can't say I've ever seen anything like it?
I've never been a fan of the color change paint, but man it sort of works on this car. I hope he keeps it as is. it needs wheels and lower it just a bit.
"Pulling" that motor would be a bitch without a lift. You would need three floor jacks. Nope. Would almost be impossible. Floor jacks only go so high. That lift is awesome.
I bought a 66 Vdub and I was the 3rd owner. It sat in a field for almost 20 years. Replaced half of the left and all of the right pans and one heater channel. Be sure to brace the body good when you take those channels out it gets really wobbly. Good luck on the rebuild , going to be a cool car. Take care. If you have time to watch, here is the one I did a while back. ruclips.net/video/h90_oBUF_wI/видео.html
That motor comes out pretty easy when you know whats going on.Cool that you can just fire it up....sitting on a jack.A Farnicastaff would secure that motor even better .....for full rpm's of the 36 hp
It sounded good
You have no idea of the enjoyment people get from vids like this thanks.
you make things look easy with all the hoard stuff you have, that lift is a nice thing to have, I built a BAHA bug out of a 58, with the back cut off I could remove the engine with a milk crate under the engine............Oh the good old days, when I could do crazy stuff....Nice job
+Roger Nichols thats like a bus, you can pull the bumper and apron,
sweet she is alive that is way cool awesome love it can;t wait till tomorrow sweet ride.
The starter sounded like a quiet air raid siren if you were to keep a steady cycling. :-)
Love that color! Look badass with a black top

Great color on the car.
Something wonderful that you have such patients. When you're cranking an engine. I would have given up too soon.
Just another old man!!!!
+MrTrenbo hope it works out for you,,
I'm not a vw guy, but that motor sounds really good....
Sounds crazy but I think that little car looked happy to go home with you. Ran great should make a really good car.
+TheRedneckRailRoad l saw it wink a little too,
The best sounding bug engine I have heard in a while. Great job!
You may not be a professional but you care and take pride in your work and that's puts you at the top of the class!
I almost destroyed a new starter by "testing" it outside the bus because I did not know it needed a bushing to keep the shaft straight. I was happy to see you explained that for everyone!

Impressed with the results after the wash! I see Mustie the used car salesman in the future!!
Good thing you know your v dubs. That starter bushing would baffle those of us who haven't worked on them. Thanks for posting your vids!
The motor sounds great Darrin. Looks like a winner of a project on this one!
While you getcher supper ate I'm gonna watch this a few more times. I am loving this!
Coming right along! Cant wait to see you driving it with the top down!
i swear man you have a gift to take things that are left for the junk yard and you bring them back to life you are amazing man! i enjoy watching every video you make. when that bug is done it will be awesome! keep it that same color don't paint it a different color
Nice Runner. No smoke either..

Loved it keep up all posted. Cant work anymore have nerve damage to my hands
I feel I am with you in your place.
+Joseph Greenberg that sucks, but glad you can wrench through me,
New subscriber here from MA, with a 70 VW Bus. Love your channel.
your so calm when you come up against an issue.I usually have a mild mental breakdown of sorts
That motor sounded real good, Had a 1962 or 3 in Germany with a roll-top and semaphore turn signals drove the piss out of it, the nice ting about it was you could find anything you need in the the junk yard real cheap, this was 1973.
no no.. no no... Love seeing you bring these things back from the dead.
+Shut Yer Face Garage stinkin 10 year old jumper pack,
great progress on your newly aquired bug musti.looking forward to it's first test run, congrats.
I was hoping I'd see a video like this today! Congrats on the viable motor! Looking forward to the vidjas of getting this old girl back on the road...

Small world after all.
+Amesie's Automotive Corner it was only 6 miles from there that l picked it up, dont think im going to be matching that paint,
+mustie1 Thanks for the videos i love these builds and cold starts, now if Amesie can get the old saab out of the woods.
+mustie1 if for some reason you did ever decide to, that paint is surprising easy to match/blend. But I'd paint it a different color before I did that lol..
+Rodney Hunt Yeah, he should just take that Saab and leave directions to where he shifts it. Is that stealing?
Burlats de Montaigne I would if it was in a more secluded spot, I would have taken it months ago but the neighbors wouldn't let me until I talked to the land owner..
Good old memories from the 70's at Pleasant st garage , Marlboro ma keep up the good work.
A worthwhile project for sure... Thanks for the video!
+vw64manyrd trade it for a type 2 carcass,
Very nice! Carefull around that fan belt bud. Sometimes I drill a tiny hole in the back of that starter bump to get oil in the bushing.
Mustie1, Runs sweet! Looks like U scored a good one, at least from an engine point of view... Thanks for posting!
nice smooth runner no smoke
Pretty neat watching a VW engine running on jack!
+Jim Kodysz not far from it that muffler is pretty thin
I had to come watch it again. I haven't been under it yet. It looks better than I was afraid it would. haha
+rpeek dont blame ya, can you lift the car with the lift then let it back down with the tires sitting on rims or whatever to give you room,
+mustie1 That's a thought..
No no no no. You're right, It did sound like that's what she was saying to you. Once running, it did (as you said) Sound Sweet. Purring like a kitten ready to go go go go.
very nice brother, she's just waiting for someone to show her love. great work my friend, you should see the bed for the model A i got, it's Haad-cooA!! cheers
I always like the old-cold starts.
every day I learn some from u
Another resurrection, awesome job
chalk up another win for mustie 1
Nice find. Good job. TFS
A great sounding motor!
I was gonna say, is it me or is that one sweet runner? :>)
Ahh the dragon is alive :-D And you are professional, well i think so :-).

Nice work D . . . . thanks for sharing . . ;) Rog
Wow, that motor sounds really amazing. No clickety clack from the rockers, all 4 cylinders fire. Can it get any better?
Well a leash not you're doing when you fix these Volkswagen's up nicely in everything I enjoy your channel and keep on doing what you do man that's all that's what it's all about you know keeping people happy and then watching your stuff I enjoy it they call me cowboy but my real name's Eric talk to you soon that

Mickey took the dirt nap.
+John Strange a rat musta kicked his ass
Definitely a later 1600 dual port. Probably started out life as a 1500 single port.
+dri50 Around '70 or '71...at least in the States.
Nice making great proges
Great video
Sounds good there, Nice!
"Not terrible." What?! I wouldn't touch it from across the street. But Mustie can do anything.
Now I know where the phrase "I had to pull the motor" comes from!
"All i smell is old gas", you said. well we all have that problem sooner or later.
I love how it sounds
another one on it's way to being saved from rotting
ah yes.. "the peoples car" sitting on a floor jack running! haha. pretty cool mannnn
I've never been a fan of the color change paint, but man it sort of works on this car. I hope he keeps it as is. it needs wheels and lower it just a bit.
The Great Oracle of VW's.
As much as you work on VWs, it would be worth making a simple jig to hold the open end of the starter motor shaft so you could test it more easily.
that lift has paid you back a billion times
good job mustie. nothin you cant do.
As the body was lifting away from the engine to be revealed, I couldn't help hear a fanfare in my head....tada!!!
Good runner. What make of lift do you have?
+Barry Kelly forget the name but its from the 70s,
Wish I had one of those - someone to call me for supper lmao
you're a genius...did you go to college or not..MIT NEEDS YOU
beautiful bug
You going to do a oil change and put new plugs in it.
judging by the play in the shaft...I'd guess the bearings might be slightly shot.
was that Morse code on the starter...help help I got another heap to fix!
Ran great once ya blew all the turds out!!☺
+805ROADKING drove it with the top down, shoulda wore goggles
Just needed a little love !
+lakesideranch just a little
Surprised you had so much trouble getting the engine out. Usually they drop right out for you.
And it idles !
Who'd a thunk it 😊
Awesome..
what kind of lift are you using?
"Pulling" that motor would be a bitch without a lift. You would need three floor jacks.
Nope. Would almost be impossible. Floor jacks only go so high. That lift is awesome.
w hat is the 'lift' you are using?
Suzie the little blue coupe, beep, beep

I said 25.04 but it was 22.44..
8:00 - 9:45 -ish: a little CRC Contact Kleen would have helped that situation along, provided there's a way to squirt some in, of course.
sounds good
The battery is not installed backwards. '67 is first year of 12 volt which was also positive ground for one year only.
not true, all vws are neg ground
it's alive !
that sounded like a lawnmower lol
Funtastic!!!
That's amazing mustie1 what you can do in a 20-minute video 25 minute video
Wiggle that engine boy!
The jugs are the hot spots
