The reason this video exists is for the musicians wondering if they need the multiclock in order to sync their gear to a DAW. I often say "just use the USB on the back of your gear", or get a simple usb to 5-pin midi converter if it doesn't have a USB jack (amzn.to/4c81fVL) YES! Audio pulses are WAY more accurate than the USB Protocol. And some Pros for the ERM are that you have hardware control for its latency, which can be tricky to setup but awesome when you get it going (tutorial I made here - ruclips.net/video/fESEtmpjXOM/видео.htmlsi=O5G5Ow_fzHKFMk99) Another useful thing about the Multiclock is that it can generate the midi clock itself without the need of a computer or sequencer. -- But at the end of the day, if you need a simple and affordable way to control latency in a DAW, midi routing, or midi merging you can't really beat the MRCC 880. Another alternative is to use them BOTH together. you can get the best of both worlds, a Jitter FREE super stable audio rate clock from the Multiclock, and the merging flexibility of the MRCC 880! hmm.. 🤔 I might have to try that out haha

I recently came across the Iconnectivy MIo and it seems like the perfect solution to connect all of my midi and USB gear together and be able to route then anyway I want. Can you tell me what the differences and the benefits are to having a device like this or the multiclock over a product like the Iconnectivity Mio and Mio XL. Thanks
Always a nice experience if multiple instruments talk to one another :) BUT, for the people new to GAS…more gear usually means more problems. A simple setup can be so gratifying, because it won't be taking away from your music-making time ✌
@@knaledge6854 If you want MIDI between all of them I'd recommend BLOKAS MIDIHUB…and for audio, just whichever interface with as many inputs as you need. There are too many options to list, but I like MOTU & Arturia, as they both have internal mixers.
Sorry Ricky, you can’t compare the (otherwise excellent) MRCC to the ERM. The ERM does sample accurate sync, and the mrcc just can’t simply because the usb protocol will have jitter by default. Latency you can correct like you did (but my experience it does change between sessions, computer reboots etc). The ERM, and comparable products like Usamo, will be zero latency and zero jitter in all sessions. It it’s noticable and the other routing options of the mrcc are more important is another discussion (and the there is midi2.0 which for pc come this year).
Exactly this. I found that I can get USB midi clock perfect in one session, then come the next day and then everything will need different offsets - total pain. With the Usamo, every time is spot on
Indeed I was confused by the lack of comparison on the key selling point of the ERM which is sample accurate sync. I still love that you brought the MRCC to my attention because for midi routing it seems amazing. I will use it to replace my Blokas Midihub and Mio10, but the ERM I will keep for now.
If CLabs did something with software that took the usb sync and regenerated it internally to create sample accurate sync it would be a killer update. Especially on the bigger unit with more outputs. You could use the little buttons to start/stop I am desperate for an 8 output ERM or ACME. Currently planning on buying a 2nd one and then using a basic ERM midiclock to trigger the pair of multi clocks. Which is a pita way to approach it. I'd love an 8 or more output sync box.
i have the large mrcc, and you are still going to need the ERM for sample accurate clock when sequencing with external gear and you need to record the audio in your daw. the issue is super obvious when you revord a hihat from a drum machine, your clock will drift (clock coming from midi always drifts if coming a pc/daw) and you will also need to fix the start position. you can use the mrcc clock but it doesn't fire a record transport
Interesting. I have been using a simple setup sending tempo from my Line 6 Helix to a Korg Volca Beats. They stay perfectly in sync together, but couldn’t get them lined up in ableton. I have tried a few different ways to get things setup so that Abelton Live could clock both the Helix (for delay times) and Volca Beat. However none of it seemed to work easily. I also have an Arturia Keystep Pro, and thought I could utilize that. I have so far come up empty handed and was hoping the big MRCC unit could help me solve this and some other things around my studio. Are you saying that drift is inevitable with a DAW? That is frustrating bc part of what made the simple setup musical was the absolute perfect sync.
I picked one of these up from the creators at a synth show last year, such a good piece of kit especially for live setups. Never had any issues with it.

Go look at the other beats and see if they are on, Any for those who want a cheap alternative to the ERM go look at the Midronome it does the audio sync thing and if you have a Mac it does the audio over usb sync thing(hopefully on pc at some point)
I’ve been use the mcrr with the expansion since kickstarter, it’s in my opinion the best midi router I’ve ever had, never have any timing issues or latency issues. It does sysex and filtering, 6 inbuilt arps(I’ve never used) and a lot more conductive labs had there second hit bit of gear after the noodler
I own both the Multiclock and MRCC (the big one). Multclock can send transport + clock signals out 4 MIDI-Outs, and each can be shifted back or forward using knobs. You can also mute the ports with the click of a button, it's great for stopping /starting sequencers. The MRCC can route MIDI messages in and out of it, filter them, merge them, split them, duplicate them. It can also act as a USB MIDI host. It sounds like you were using the Multiclock as a MIDI merge device, which sounds like a nightmare. I mean, I guess it can do it, but that is not its strength. Its strength is stopping and starting midi clock, and sending the same clock to multiple outputs. I've not used the small MRCC, but the big one can generate clock and transport. For me, it was much easier to use the Multiclock to do clock and transport duties rather than menu-diving the MRCC. Don't put the Multiclock away; use it to supplement the MRCC.
Yeah I have the same setup and I use them both for different reasons. It's apples and oranges and they cannot really be compared. Obviously Ricky has to denounce one of them or else where would he get the BS clickbait title for his video?
I have the full size MRCC and love it! If you have each "out" device listening to a different midi channel, then you don't need to worry at all about sending the same message to multiple devices. The full size MRCC has a clock on it and can do a bunch of additional filtering and merging tricks. Not sure if they have a way to do that on the smaller one. Only places I've really had issues have mostly been from USB midi being unreliable, which isn't really conductive labs fault. I have found that too much MPE info can cause jitter on the internal clock as well
This was just the video I needed! I had seen the bigger MRCC recently and wondered if that was what I needed to get to connect all the synth toys I have, but I was worried that it was possibly too much for what I am working with. The 880 seems like it's the right size for me; and it looks pretty simple to use, which is great, because I'm a total noob with midi. Thanks so much for making pretty much exactly what I wanted to find in a quick demo/review of a product I didn't know I needed.
Still think audio signals are the way to go when syncing with the DAW. When I have tried syncing midi in the past, I always had to keep changing my latency settings and then even after spending ages finally getting it working fine, you would get this random jitter for no reason and everything would be off again requiring lots of edits in the DAW to correct the audio afterwards. Not sure if newer versions of Ableton resolved this issue but in any case the ERM Multiclock really solved this for me and it's a great build. Plus really useful for adding shuffle. I think this is a nice way to route midi to different hardware devices. Dear Conductive Labs if you're watching, can you send Ricky a NDLR please as I want to see how he makes house music with it?
I've been using a Midronome since it was released and it solved all my issues with clocking and latency. After the update running a system daemon + a VST I haven't had any issues, my DAW can work as a master clock, the Midronome spits its MIDI to a Midihub for syncing my hardware, and the jack output goes to a Pam's in the Eurorack to sync the rack master clock. All my MIDI hardware + modular stuff + DAW is sync'd perfectly with this setup, had so many issues before, almost bought a Multiclock many times but the Midronome has been awesome so far.
I have been looking at the big brother MRCC since it's announcement. I have a ton of hardware that is wired via USB MIDI and 2X mio10 interfaces, but this is such a unique and useful MIDI router that I'm gonna have to get one before they are gone.
I strongly recommend the Blokas Midihub. I switched after a while from the MRCC to the Midihub… it solves all my midiproblems in the studio and on stage. And it combines merging, splitting, midi information filtering with a creative approach on midi processing.
Mrcc (or mio for that matter) have a very different usecase to the erm. I don’t think comparing them is fair! I have mioxl (which does much more than mrcc does) and still have use for the multiclock. It’s not either or. Mrcc is fine too but really compare it to a mio :)
Also worth mentioning the Blokas Midihub. You have to hook it up to a PC/Mac for setting things up, but you can save a bunch of setups inside the unit and use it standalone with a quick recall button to switch thru. Way deeper on the midi ruoting/programming and dirty cheap.
With the MRCC big brother, besides having more I/O you will skip changing your devices configuration because all connected devices to the mrcc can be routed, clock controlled individually per device connected IN THE MRCC mini screen
I have the large MRCC bought from kickstarter the best unit and it gives you a lot more control as you can see and adjust all the settings directly on the MRCC I think you should upgrade to the main one. I also have the Blokas midihub and the Mioxl ,yes I do have too many synths :) the MRCC is definitely the best unit
If they ever bring out a 1U rack version with connectors at the back, I'll consider replacing my MioXL. But as long as it requires cable clutter on my desk to work, this is not an option.
Totally agree the ERM isn't great for routing, but the MRCC does not solve the fundamental USB timing issues that the ERM is known for. They compliment each other.
Great video as always Ricky. Got one last year to use with my Digitakt. after looking at the Erica's powered midi thru box for a bit I picked the Mrcc880 for the number of inputs. To make up for less midi outs I have my OG Midi Solutions quadra thru attached giving me an extra 3 outputs.
You might want to look at the mio xm and xl if you're just after midi connectivity. I have a mio xm connected to maschine+. Switch profile by touching the front panel and now all of my gear is being sequenced by my computer (over ethernet). Press again and I'm sequencing everything with my ipad. All of that without touching a cable.
Mind reader! This video comes at a perfect time as I'm setting up my pedalboard. Wondering how to get all the various MIDI routing set up, also with some remaining flexibility for ad-hoc stuff. I don't need the accuracy of an ERM, just the interconnectivity and merging/splitting of something like the MRCC. Nice! 🙌
Actually, another commenter here just reminded me about the Blokas Midihub. I have one sitting in a box here. 4-in and 4-out with some pretty flexible routing and MIDI transforming. Might be all I need 😜
It's been a month now and it's still awesome haha! Being able to quickly route stuff around try it out and then go back to the other setup with a few button presses
Ricky, buddy, where ya been? Conductive Labs is da bomb. If you think this unit is good, you should check out their bigger one. It’s the brain of my entire system
I'm biased about this, of course, so check it out for yourself, but the more affordable alternative to ERM is CLOCKstep:MULTI, which also performs basic DIN and USB routing. And a real contender for a routing and filtering MIDI utility box is PLEXUS:4, which can serve as a USB Host. I may be exploring some ideas in a firmware update though, you got me thinking ...
I have been using iConnectivity mioXL for 2 years and it is generally good. Software interface is unstable from time to time though. But this hardware real button combo setup is next level I have to say....
Guys, not so fast! ERM is still much tighter. Look at Ricky’s Audio recording. It drifts and he relies on Abelton to offset the audio timing issues. Multiclock doesn’t drift at all and you don’t need to do any adjustments in Ableton. It’s Sample accurate. MRRC’s routing is awesome!! But you still need Multiclock. Especially if you have an MPC/S2400/TR8S/OXI etc… For Digitakt2, with Overbridge… it’s also sample accurate for sync, like the ERM. So if you sequence synths on the elektron, it will be perfect ( of course the software will be in beta for a year)
Say it with me: Retrokits Rk-06 is THE solution for every setup! Multiple masters? Check. Midi hub, check. Usb Midi host, check. Midi filtering, latency control, midi merging, midi splitting, check. It does so many things so well
Not in my case, I needed a way to send midi clock from a DAW to multiple sequencers in my setup, and I had the added benefit of being able to merge and split midi signals which is pretty dope!
having the nord going into the dt just through the midi device is the same as directly into midi in on dt….so this use case is not really benefitting the extra device….thats just how everybody ever did it xD but the merging with the usb stuff is great indeed if you need it. I stopped looking at routing, just bought a 1 to 4 midi box and rest is daisy chained in my every expanding dawless setup…same with audio i dont even use a mixer anymore just chaining and gain staging
The midiclock is for accurate sync with your daw, mrcc does not do that. mrcc does routing, midiclock does not do that. what a strange comparison. do you have beef with erm? ;) ;)

I use a midi in x3 box into a midi thru x5 box and have them stacked on-top of each other like a single box Means I have a master clock, two 'master' sequencers (mpc/digi) and a master keybed Everything else is just routed out to hw via channel and make sure transport is only being triggered on synths that I WANT to run in isolation (like 303) Otherwise everything is just a channel mapping and works really well Cost me like $150au
I own both devices (bigger MRCC with input and output expanders), each of them serves a completely different purpose. Multiclock is a CLOCK distributor. MRCC is just a midi router with some merge and filter capabilities. But it doesn't support jitter free audio sync with DAW like Multiclock, how it could be better solution? From my experience with MRCC - I wouldn't buy it again. It's unfinished product. There are several major flaws which are really frustrating and developers basically stopped to support it. To name a few - there is LIMIT for maximum possible routes which is not mentioned anywhere, no easy way to backup presets (sd card is located inside the case, you need to unscrew one side to access it), no software editor - a big deal for complex setups, filters are limited (eg. no midi channel filter, this is basic feature of almost any midi router - I don't understand why it's not implemented) And so on... For smaller setups Blokas Midihub is way better choice - it's cheaper and more feature packed. For bigger studio setups I feel iConnectivity mioXL is the best solution although it has some flaws too.
I started off with a mio xl and it is great but after having to go in and out of a computer to make little changes kind of takes away the from flow of working with hardware. For me either versions of the mrc are much faster and intuitive. Conductive labs customer service is amazing, dont sleep.
The multiclock is superior for timing as it uses an audio track to sync to the DAW instead of USB, which has jitter. Not the same thing. Don’t be confused all. Get both if you want flexible routing, but don’t think the MRCC can replace the rock solid timing of the multiclock.
I always like watching your videos, although it's more at the edge of my setup. Little feedback for this video: the talking track was a bit too silent compared to the music, making it hard to follow. Please keep going with these amazing videos!
Audio rate is WAY more accurate than USB for sure. That was the whole reason I got the Multiclock way back in the day, but lately my setup has simplified and this has been more than enough :)

I find the mc 707 is perfect for midi sync USB out from PC to 707 Then midi din out to my midi thru box to all my hardware Just use the mute buttons to start sync on my synths and sequences Just adjust the sound card to its lowest buffer settings on PC When recording To get lowest latency

I think it’s crazy that some hi end audio interfaces with decent midi like RME UFXiii which I own, doesn’t implement this via software (using one audio output in some way if needed). They even did a video selling the EMR (maybe they’re the same company owners ?).

I have a lot of MIDI gear and use 2x - MIO10 and MIOXL - one of the things that’s dope about them too is that they work over ethernet, and provide both USB & DIN MIDI connectivity. It literally behaves like a USB HUB in a way but, via ethernet and that means it can be anywhere in my studio without worrying about long USB cables (bad).
Yeah, I also have one I got for cheap when it got discontinued, it's worked without a hitch for me. And more importantly, I can even have one port where I filter MIDI clock out and when where I filter MIDI clock out, which is necessary for the TR-909, which echoes MIDI clock, even when it is also sending it out. 😀
I think before buying another gadget to save your hypothetical workflow, learn how MIDI works and map it all on paper. Yes, MRCC is nice. So is RK-06. I guarantee you could get around MIDI filtering without buying these tho.
Hey Ricky, have you ever tried the iConnectivity Mio XL? I've been using that for years now. Tried the Multiclock based on a vid of yours I watched and liked the mutes and compact form, but the Mio blew it out of the water both with routing and midi filtering. I'd highly recommend checking that one out. In 1u its got 8din ins 10din outs, 10 usb hosts, daw control and a crazy amount of midi over network ins and outs. I've always been curious how these two would compare but I suspect the Mio would crush!
The MRCC 880 is a great bit of kit. But TBF it doesn't compare with what Overbridge can achieve in terms of timing accuracy between DAW and hardware. With Overbridge, there are two massive advantages. 1) Timing accuracy between Elektron gear and DAW is down to the sample level with no jitter or drift unlike any other kind of sync. In Ricky's video, adjusting the latency for the Digitakt by 15ms will work over a certain number of bars, but over time the longer the track plays the more it will drift out of sync with the DAW. That just doesn't happen with Overbridge. 2) Any hardware you sync from Digitakt/Syntakt etc via MIDI DIN will also be in rock solid sync with the DAW. Elektron gear has great hardware MIDI sync accuracy and that combined with Overbridge is a big reason why I use Elektron in a hybrid setup. TL;DR... we need Overbridge for the Digitakt 2 Ricky, hope it's coming soon!
Overbridge's latency, unfortunately, renders it completely unusable for anything but rendering stems. With a M1 Max processor, it glitches out with anything under a 256 buffer (my RME is always at 64 unless I have to switch it to match Overbridge) - Ableton's reported latency is ~50ms.
@@mvsr990 strange, I'm running a Mac M2 Studio with Ableton Live 11 Suite and Overbridge is flawless, absolutely bang on the money in terms of sync with no more latency than any other plugin. Not sure why you're getting that kind of performance, sounds really frustrating.
@@touchthatdial You might not notice the latency but best case scenario for Overbridge if it works at a lower buffer without pops and glitches is more than 20ms. That's 4-5X longer than any plugin used for recording.
@@mvsr990 I'm using a Syntakt into Live 11 Suite via Overbridge. Audio interface is a UAD ApolloX4 which I run with low latency (around 6-8ms roundtrip) at 64 samples buffer. When I play a synth track on the Syntakt using my MIDI keyboard controller, it feels just as responsive as any other plugin in my system. I'm normally very aware of latency, it's why I bought a UAD interface which has good low latency with plugins (and super low latency for tracking live instruments). Not sure why you're experiencing much higher latency, if I was getting >20ms I'd really notice it.
Looks useful indeed but it’s two completely different things. The ERM takes care of sync issues, and this one the routing. With this you’ll still run into latency problems when loading Ableton with fix and vsts and such. You’ll need to go in and adjust the midi-compensation, so the headache isn’t gone. It’s just different. Cool device thought!
I have a reasonably small setup, two drum machines and six synths. All Clocked to Cubase using an Expert Sleepers - USAMO. An audio signal is sent from the Expert Sleepers plug-in in your DAW to the USAMO device, then I have 5 Pin MIDI going from the USAMO into a MIDI Thru Box, then onto my synths/Drum machines. The timing is rock solid, zero jitter, zero problems. Bought the USAMO used for £70. Depending on your audio interface it can be a bit of a faff getting the thing to work, but once you get it working it's set & forget.
I've been using a very similar setup recently with multiclock and Midhub instead of MRCC. Its a bit tricky to setup properly and avoiding midi feedbacks but at the end seems to works pretty well. The only downside I find in this setup is the digitakt midi behaviour, I cannot understand why external midi is not processed by scales, so actually using an external midi keyboard let you loose some DT II functionality. :(
Searching for the same workflow in terms of being able to use my midi keyboard and my digitakt II sequencer to send midi to the same synth. However, I only plan on using a single sequencer (digitakt II). Would this product be suitable or should I opt for something else?
Looks like a possible alternative to the Multiclock although it doesn't provide the same audio-based sync mechanism to your DAW.. I always wanted one but too $$$. One thing to note. The DT doesn't pass pitch bend or mod wheel messages if you re-direct MIDI through one of the DT's MIDI tracks. They will pass if you set the MIDI Out port to Thru but then MIDI output from the DT's tracks won't be sent only the MIDI on the DT's MIDI In
Actually, as you’ve got one, how would you feel about running a test. Send MIDI out of OT on channels 1 and 2 to DT passing thru the computer, thru MIDI Pipe, filtering out channel 2, to DT and see if that introduces any latency.

That’s my understanding also. A more nerdy dive might be needed to see if the grm should just be used for the sync aspect and the 880 used for routing. Just how accurate is the midi clock vs the grm/acme in this way? Luckily the GRM is the cupboard and not sold. The rotting on this unit is superb though. Love it

this really complements the multiclock rather than replacing it. sending the multiclock to the MRCC and routing to same channel as Digitakt should merge with notes from Nord. That way you have all the same functionality with audio synced midi clock

I recently came across the Iconnectivy MIo and it seems like the perfect solution to connect all of my midi and USB gear together and be able to route then anyway I want. Can you tell me what the differences and the benefits are to having a device like this or the multiclock over a product like the Iconnectivity Mio and Mio XL. Thanks

@@knaledge6854 If you want MIDI between all of them I'd recommend BLOKAS MIDIHUB…and for audio, just whichever interface with as many inputs as you need. There are too many options to list, but I like MOTU & Arturia, as they both have internal mixers.
Sorry Ricky, you can’t compare the (otherwise excellent) MRCC to the ERM. The ERM does sample accurate sync, and the mrcc just can’t simply because the usb protocol will have jitter by default. Latency you can correct like you did (but my experience it does change between sessions, computer reboots etc). The ERM, and comparable products like Usamo, will be zero latency and zero jitter in all sessions. It it’s noticable and the other routing options of the mrcc are more important is another discussion (and the there is midi2.0 which for pc come this year).
Exactly this. I found that I can get USB midi clock perfect in one session, then come the next day and then everything will need different offsets - total pain. With the Usamo, every time is spot on
Indeed I was confused by the lack of comparison on the key selling point of the ERM which is sample accurate sync. I still love that you brought the MRCC to my attention because for midi routing it seems amazing. I will use it to replace my Blokas Midihub and Mio10, but the ERM I will keep for now.

If CLabs did something with software that took the usb sync and regenerated it internally to create sample accurate sync it would be a killer update. Especially on the bigger unit with more outputs. You could use the little buttons to start/stop I am desperate for an 8 output ERM or ACME. Currently planning on buying a 2nd one and then using a basic ERM midiclock to trigger the pair of multi clocks. Which is a pita way to approach it. I'd love an 8 or more output sync box.

i have the large mrcc, and you are still going to need the ERM for sample accurate clock when sequencing with external gear and you need to record the audio in your daw. the issue is super obvious when you revord a hihat from a drum machine, your clock will drift (clock coming from midi always drifts if coming a pc/daw) and you will also need to fix the start position. you can use the mrcc clock but it doesn't fire a record transport
Interesting. I have been using a simple setup sending tempo from my Line 6 Helix to a Korg Volca Beats. They stay perfectly in sync together, but couldn’t get them lined up in ableton.
I have tried a few different ways to get things setup so that Abelton Live could clock both the Helix (for delay times) and Volca Beat. However none of it seemed to work easily.
I also have an Arturia Keystep Pro, and thought I could utilize that. I have so far come up empty handed and was hoping the big MRCC unit could help me solve this and some other things around my studio.
Are you saying that drift is inevitable with a DAW? That is frustrating bc part of what made the simple setup musical was the absolute perfect sync.
I picked one of these up from the creators at a synth show last year, such a good piece of kit especially for live setups. Never had any issues with it.

It's perfect for Matrix set ups. I went this route and have never had issues.

Go look at the other beats and see if they are on, Any for those who want a cheap alternative to the ERM go look at the Midronome it does the audio sync thing and if you have a Mac it does the audio over usb sync thing(hopefully on pc at some point)

I’ve been use the mcrr with the expansion since kickstarter, it’s in my opinion the best midi router I’ve ever had, never have any timing issues or latency issues. It does sysex and filtering, 6 inbuilt arps(I’ve never used) and a lot more conductive labs had there second hit bit of gear after the noodler
I own both the Multiclock and MRCC (the big one).
Multclock can send transport + clock signals out 4 MIDI-Outs, and each can be shifted back or forward using knobs. You can also mute the ports with the click of a button, it's great for stopping /starting sequencers.
The MRCC can route MIDI messages in and out of it, filter them, merge them, split them, duplicate them. It can also act as a USB MIDI host.
It sounds like you were using the Multiclock as a MIDI merge device, which sounds like a nightmare. I mean, I guess it can do it, but that is not its strength. Its strength is stopping and starting midi clock, and sending the same clock to multiple outputs.
I've not used the small MRCC, but the big one can generate clock and transport. For me, it was much easier to use the Multiclock to do clock and transport duties rather than menu-diving the MRCC.
Don't put the Multiclock away; use it to supplement the MRCC.
Yeah I have the same setup and I use them both for different reasons. It's apples and oranges and they cannot really be compared. Obviously Ricky has to denounce one of them or else where would he get the BS clickbait title for his video?
In the middle of rebuilding my studio and this looks like a great option for what I'm going for, good recommendation and demo!

I have the full size MRCC and love it! If you have each "out" device listening to a different midi channel, then you don't need to worry at all about sending the same message to multiple devices. The full size MRCC has a clock on it and can do a bunch of additional filtering and merging tricks. Not sure if they have a way to do that on the smaller one. Only places I've really had issues have mostly been from USB midi being unreliable, which isn't really conductive labs fault. I have found that too much MPE info can cause jitter on the internal clock as well
This was just the video I needed! I had seen the bigger MRCC recently and wondered if that was what I needed to get to connect all the synth toys I have, but I was worried that it was possibly too much for what I am working with. The 880 seems like it's the right size for me; and it looks pretty simple to use, which is great, because I'm a total noob with midi. Thanks so much for making pretty much exactly what I wanted to find in a quick demo/review of a product I didn't know I needed.

Still think audio signals are the way to go when syncing with the DAW. When I have tried syncing midi in the past, I always had to keep changing my latency settings and then even after spending ages finally getting it working fine, you would get this random jitter for no reason and everything would be off again requiring lots of edits in the DAW to correct the audio afterwards. Not sure if newer versions of Ableton resolved this issue but in any case the ERM Multiclock really solved this for me and it's a great build. Plus really useful for adding shuffle. I think this is a nice way to route midi to different hardware devices.

I've been using a Midronome since it was released and it solved all my issues with clocking and latency. After the update running a system daemon + a VST I haven't had any issues, my DAW can work as a master clock, the Midronome spits its MIDI to a Midihub for syncing my hardware, and the jack output goes to a Pam's in the Eurorack to sync the rack master clock. All my MIDI hardware + modular stuff + DAW is sync'd perfectly with this setup, had so many issues before, almost bought a Multiclock many times but the Midronome has been awesome so far.
I'm gonna buy the big one!!! This is killer Ricky!!!

Nice tip on the autochannel. I never knew you could do that. I got the MRCC about a year ago and it really has made a huge difference in my workflow.
I have been looking at the big brother MRCC since it's announcement. I have a ton of hardware that is wired via USB MIDI and 2X mio10 interfaces, but this is such a unique and useful MIDI router that I'm gonna have to get one before they are gone.
The MRCC does look nice!

I strongly recommend the Blokas Midihub. I switched after a while from the MRCC to the Midihub… it solves all my midiproblems in the studio and on stage.
And it combines merging, splitting, midi information filtering with a creative approach on midi processing.
I got the big one, with the expander, great piece of gear!

The big mrcc is also fantastic. I have both. Smol one for live smol rigs but the main studio is all about the big mrcc
Mrcc (or mio for that matter) have a very different usecase to the erm. I don’t think comparing them is fair! I have mioxl (which does much more than mrcc does) and still have use for the multiclock. It’s not either or. Mrcc is fine too but really compare it to a mio :)

I've had this model for about a year and love it. I am also sad I didn't buy the big one.
Also worth mentioning the Blokas Midihub. You have to hook it up to a PC/Mac for setting things up, but you can save a bunch of setups inside the unit and use it standalone with a quick recall button to switch thru.
Way deeper on the midi ruoting/programming and dirty cheap.

With the MRCC big brother, besides having more I/O you will skip changing your devices configuration because all connected devices to the mrcc can be routed, clock controlled individually per device connected IN THE MRCC mini screen

I have the large MRCC bought from kickstarter the best unit and it gives you a lot more control as you can see and adjust all the settings directly on the MRCC I think you should upgrade to the main one. I also have the Blokas midihub and the Mioxl ,yes I do have too many synths :) the MRCC is definitely the best unit
If they ever bring out a 1U rack version with connectors at the back, I'll consider replacing my MioXL. But as long as it requires cable clutter on my desk to work, this is not an option.
Totally agree the ERM isn't great for routing, but the MRCC does not solve the fundamental USB timing issues that the ERM is known for.
They compliment each other.

Got one last year to use with my Digitakt. after looking at the Erica's powered midi thru box for a bit I picked the Mrcc880 for the number of inputs. To make up for less midi outs I have my OG Midi Solutions quadra thru attached giving me an extra 3 outputs.

You might want to look at the mio xm and xl if you're just after midi connectivity. I have a mio xm connected to maschine+. Switch profile by touching the front panel and now all of my gear is being sequenced by my computer (over ethernet). Press again and I'm sequencing everything with my ipad. All of that without touching a cable.

Mind reader! This video comes at a perfect time as I'm setting up my pedalboard. Wondering how to get all the various MIDI routing set up, also with some remaining flexibility for ad-hoc stuff. I don't need the accuracy of an ERM, just the interconnectivity and merging/splitting of something like the MRCC. Nice! 🙌
Actually, another commenter here just reminded me about the Blokas Midihub. I have one sitting in a box here. 4-in and 4-out with some pretty flexible routing and MIDI transforming. Might be all I need 😜

I'm biased about this, of course, so check it out for yourself, but the more affordable alternative to ERM is CLOCKstep:MULTI, which also performs basic DIN and USB routing. And a real contender for a routing and filtering MIDI utility box is PLEXUS:4, which can serve as a USB Host. I may be exploring some ideas in a firmware update though, you got me thinking ...

I have been using iConnectivity mioXL for 2 years and it is generally good. Software interface is unstable from time to time though. But this hardware real button combo setup is next level I have to say....
I’m not convinced….yet. For my workflow though. It’s a great midisplitter/router, but E-RM still rules in other areas.

Guys, not so fast! ERM is still much tighter. Look at Ricky’s Audio recording. It drifts and he relies on Abelton to offset the audio timing issues.
Multiclock doesn’t drift at all and you don’t need to do any adjustments in Ableton. It’s Sample accurate.
MRRC’s routing is awesome!! But you still need Multiclock. Especially if you have an MPC/S2400/TR8S/OXI etc…
For Digitakt2, with Overbridge… it’s also sample accurate for sync, like the ERM.
So if you sequence synths on the elektron, it will be perfect ( of course the software will be in beta for a year)

Not in my case, I needed a way to send midi clock from a DAW to multiple sequencers in my setup, and I had the added benefit of being able to merge and split midi signals which is pretty dope!

having the nord going into the dt just through the midi device is the same as directly into midi in on dt….so this use case is not really benefitting the extra device….thats just how everybody ever did it xD but the merging with the usb stuff is great indeed if you need it.
I stopped looking at routing, just bought a 1 to 4 midi box and rest is daisy chained in my every expanding dawless setup…same with audio i dont even use a mixer anymore just chaining and gain staging
The midiclock is for accurate sync with your daw, mrcc does not do that. mrcc does routing, midiclock does not do that. what a strange comparison. do you have beef with erm? ;) ;)

It's been working fantastically
I use a midi in x3 box into a midi thru x5 box and have them stacked on-top of each other like a single box
Means I have a master clock, two 'master' sequencers (mpc/digi) and a master keybed
Everything else is just routed out to hw via channel and make sure transport is only being triggered on synths that I WANT to run in isolation (like 303)
Otherwise everything is just a channel mapping and works really well
Cost me like $150au
I own both devices (bigger MRCC with input and output expanders), each of them serves a completely different purpose. Multiclock is a CLOCK distributor. MRCC is just a midi router with some merge and filter capabilities. But it doesn't support jitter free audio sync with DAW like Multiclock, how it could be better solution? From my experience with MRCC - I wouldn't buy it again. It's unfinished product. There are several major flaws which are really frustrating and developers basically stopped to support it. To name a few - there is LIMIT for maximum possible routes which is not mentioned anywhere, no easy way to backup presets (sd card is located inside the case, you need to unscrew one side to access it), no software editor - a big deal for complex setups, filters are limited (eg. no midi channel filter, this is basic feature of almost any midi router - I don't understand why it's not implemented) And so on... For smaller setups Blokas Midihub is way better choice - it's cheaper and more feature packed. For bigger studio setups I feel iConnectivity mioXL is the best solution although it has some flaws too.
I started off with a mio xl and it is great but after having to go in and out of a computer to make little changes kind of takes away the from flow of working with hardware. For me either versions of the mrc are much faster and intuitive. Conductive labs customer service is amazing, dont sleep.
Why have I watched this? I have one sequencer and one synth, no hybrid set up and still I watch the video to the end with enjoyment.
The multiclock is superior for timing as it uses an audio track to sync to the DAW instead of USB, which has jitter. Not the same thing. Don’t be confused all. Get both if you want flexible routing, but don’t think the MRCC can replace the rock solid timing of the multiclock.
I always like watching your videos, although it's more at the edge of my setup.

I think you are ignoring why audio pulses are used to sync the computers to external midi gear.
Audio rate is WAY more accurate than USB for sure. That was the whole reason I got the Multiclock way back in the day, but lately my setup has simplified and this has been more than enough :)

I think it’s crazy that some hi end audio interfaces with decent midi like RME UFXiii which I own, doesn’t implement this via software (using one audio output in some way if needed). They even did a video selling the EMR (maybe they’re the same company owners ?).

I have a lot of MIDI gear and use 2x - MIO10 and MIOXL - one of the things that’s dope about them too is that they work over ethernet, and provide both USB & DIN MIDI connectivity. It literally behaves like a USB HUB in a way but, via ethernet and that means it can be anywhere in my studio without worrying about long USB cables (bad).
Yeah, I also have one I got for cheap when it got discontinued, it's worked without a hitch for me. And more importantly, I can even have one port where I filter MIDI clock out and when where I filter MIDI clock out, which is necessary for the TR-909, which echoes MIDI clock, even when it is also sending it out. 😀
Yes iConnectivity devices are the way.
I think before buying another gadget to save your hypothetical workflow, learn how MIDI works and map it all on paper. Yes, MRCC is nice. So is RK-06. I guarantee you could get around MIDI filtering without buying these tho.

Hey Ricky, have you ever tried the iConnectivity Mio XL? I've been using that for years now. Tried the Multiclock based on a vid of yours I watched and liked the mutes and compact form, but the Mio blew it out of the water both with routing and midi filtering.
I'd highly recommend checking that one out. In 1u its got 8din ins 10din outs, 10 usb hosts, daw control and a crazy amount of midi over network ins and outs. I've always been curious how these two would compare but I suspect the Mio would crush!

The MRCC 880 is a great bit of kit. But TBF it doesn't compare with what Overbridge can achieve in terms of timing accuracy between DAW and hardware. With Overbridge, there are two massive advantages. 1) Timing accuracy between Elektron gear and DAW is down to the sample level with no jitter or drift unlike any other kind of sync. In Ricky's video, adjusting the latency for the Digitakt by 15ms will work over a certain number of bars, but over time the longer the track plays the more it will drift out of sync with the DAW. That just doesn't happen with Overbridge. 2) Any hardware you sync from Digitakt/Syntakt etc via MIDI DIN will also be in rock solid sync with the DAW. Elektron gear has great hardware MIDI sync accuracy and that combined with Overbridge is a big reason why I use Elektron in a hybrid setup. TL;DR... we need Overbridge for the Digitakt 2 Ricky, hope it's coming soon!
Overbridge's latency, unfortunately, renders it completely unusable for anything but rendering stems. With a M1 Max processor, it glitches out with anything under a 256 buffer (my RME is always at 64 unless I have to switch it to match Overbridge) - Ableton's reported latency is ~50ms.
@@mvsr990 strange, I'm running a Mac M2 Studio with Ableton Live 11 Suite and Overbridge is flawless, absolutely bang on the money in terms of sync with no more latency than any other plugin. Not sure why you're getting that kind of performance, sounds really frustrating.
@@touchthatdial You might not notice the latency but best case scenario for Overbridge if it works at a lower buffer without pops and glitches is more than 20ms. That's 4-5X longer than any plugin used for recording.
@@mvsr990 I'm using a Syntakt into Live 11 Suite via Overbridge. Audio interface is a UAD ApolloX4 which I run with low latency (around 6-8ms roundtrip) at 64 samples buffer. When I play a synth track on the Syntakt using my MIDI keyboard controller, it feels just as responsive as any other plugin in my system. I'm normally very aware of latency, it's why I bought a UAD interface which has good low latency with plugins (and super low latency for tracking live instruments). Not sure why you're experiencing much higher latency, if I was getting >20ms I'd really notice it.
Looks useful indeed but it’s two completely different things. The ERM takes care of sync issues, and this one the routing.
With this you’ll still run into latency problems when loading Ableton with fix and vsts and such. You’ll need to go in and adjust the midi-compensation, so the headache isn’t gone. It’s just different. Cool device thought!
I have a reasonably small setup, two drum machines and six synths. All Clocked to Cubase using an Expert Sleepers - USAMO. An audio signal is sent from the Expert Sleepers plug-in in your DAW to the USAMO device, then I have 5 Pin MIDI going from the USAMO into a MIDI Thru Box, then onto my synths/Drum machines. The timing is rock solid, zero jitter, zero problems. Bought the USAMO used for £70. Depending on your audio interface it can be a bit of a faff getting the thing to work, but once you get it working it's set & forget.
The Retrokits RK-006 can be used just like this, that’s how I have my studio set up
I've been using a very similar setup recently with multiclock and Midhub instead of MRCC. Its a bit tricky to setup properly and avoiding midi feedbacks but at the end seems to works pretty well. The only downside I find in this setup is the digitakt midi behaviour, I cannot understand why external midi is not processed by scales, so actually using an external midi keyboard let you loose some DT II functionality. :(

Searching for the same workflow in terms of being able to use my midi keyboard and my digitakt II sequencer to send midi to the same synth. However, I only plan on using a single sequencer (digitakt II). Would this product be suitable or should I opt for something else?

Get the OG full size MRCC, you won't be disappointed.
Looks like a possible alternative to the Multiclock although it doesn't provide the same audio-based sync mechanism to your DAW.. I always wanted one but too $$$. One thing to note. The DT doesn't pass pitch bend or mod wheel messages if you re-direct MIDI through one of the DT's MIDI tracks. They will pass if you set the MIDI Out port to Thru but then MIDI output from the DT's tracks won't be sent only the MIDI on the DT's MIDI In
Actually, as you’ve got one, how would you feel about running a test. Send MIDI out of OT on channels 1 and 2 to DT passing thru the computer, thru MIDI Pipe, filtering out channel 2, to DT and see if that introduces any latency.

That’s my understanding also. A more nerdy dive might be needed to see if the grm should just be used for the sync aspect and the 880 used for routing. Just how accurate is the midi clock vs the grm/acme in this way? Luckily the GRM is the cupboard and not sold. The rotting on this unit is superb though. Love it

I was under the impression that the multiclock did not need a computer to function as jitter free master midi clock.... does the mrcc do this same thing?

this really complements the multiclock rather than replacing it. sending the multiclock to the MRCC and routing to same channel as Digitakt should merge with notes from Nord. That way you have all the same functionality with audio synced midi clock
