What a stunning version of this classic DRIVE song. This song is quite 'haunting' to me...in a very good way. So much depth in the lyrics. This song talks about the guy who reminded the girl he is the one who has been the pillar of her strength all the while and that he will always be her protector and make sure no matter she is, he will drive her home safely. THE CARS nailed it with this giant song!
As a singer I’m always conscious of how I represent my version of a classic or inspirational song. It’s my way of honoring the artist. This version does just that. Benjamin Orre, the bass player is the vocalist, but this song was written by lead singer Rik Ocasek. It’s also the Cars biggest hit and a departure from their signature new wave sound. What an blessing for Benjamin to be able to sing this song that not only brings awareness to addiction but also allows each of us that sing it to remind the audience to have a moment of self awareness by asking, who’s gunna drive you home? This version is true to the original. And in the spirit of the original, written by the lead singer and passed on to another, this version is so good , you’ll forget its karaoke and not the original.
Very well observed!. I do Beatles stuff with a friend and we try to be as close to originals as we can. We don't try to reinvent the wheel; staying true is our tribute....after all, if we approach the sound of original singers, we think that's great!
