    A&E mishandling victims and survivors seems to be a theme! Several people from the Scientology: The Aftermath show report similar stories. They need trauma informed therapists behind the scenes on every show!

    • @cabrown308
      @cabrown308 2 месяца назад +4

      It’s not in the show they need them. It’s when they make contact with people they need to follow up with them or connect them to help.

    • @kontzel
      @kontzel 2 месяца назад +11

      Therapist here. I would NEVER do that. I wouldn't stand by and let someone be interviewed through their trauma reactions for hours and I wouldn't permit sessions I conducted to be recorded and broadcast on TV. I get what you're saying, but a therapist who did participate in a show like this would be suspect at best IMO. Reality TV and Trauma Therapy don't mix.

      @@kontzelso how do you get people out of cults?

    • @kontzel
      @kontzel 2 месяца назад +6

      @patriciaritchie1783 Not with reality TV. As a therapist I might agree to be a part of a documentary or investigative news program, but not reality TV. Survivors have the right to tell their story however they wish (I hope the survivors on this A&E show were well compensated.) As a therapist I won't use my skills and knowledge to support the kind of sensationalism that reality TV orchestrates.

    So proud of you for facing these issues head on - it was so brave of you to leave all you’ve ever known. Reminds me of some real life handmaids tale shit! I left the extremist fundamental Christian “community” I was raised in 13 years ago and had no idea what I was doing. It took another 6-7 years for me to realize I was only holding on to the faith part inside due to fear of going to hell. I let go all the way and eventually started therapy and seeking out stories like yours to give me hope. That is where true healing has been able to begin. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. You are an inspiration. Much love. (This message is for both you gals - you both faced leaving the false safety of religion in quest for freedom and help others do the same - you are both heroines.) ❤️

    I was so disappointed when the show stopped. I was hoping it was going to help others want to leave their cults. When it ended I remember thinking that I hoped it wasn’t because they didn’t have enough people fleeing to record an keep the show going. The show was so empowering and heartbreaking at the same time. It was just so awesome to get to witness the people start new paths in life and how each person was reacted differently. It was interesting because I didn’t know anything about these religious groups until I seen the show. Love you two together, you have great chemistry and personalities mesh so well together.

    At about 43 minutes in, when Amanda talks about how empowering it is to see yourself as other people might be seeing you, I remember feeling exactly that way when I started modeling. Yes, I see the flaws in myself, but I also see the things that I (and other people) like. Also, getting that outside perspective helps me see things I might want to change, & maybe even ways to implement those changes. Even if I never take the necessary steps, knowledge is power. So many levels of pride!

    Documentary / reality TV producers absolutely do not have good intentions when they push survivors to cry like they did to Amanda.
    I understand why Amanda feels the show had an overall positive impact, but that can be true while also acknowledging the producers and network chose to abuse the survivors. There were plenty of opportunities to support instead of exploit.
    I recently learned about the work of Jess Shane. She’s bringing awareness to the deeply exploitative practices of the documentary / reality show field. The power dynamics and ethics of documentaries are so important, especially with these shows/films becoming so much more popular and sensationalizing.
