  • Beyonce's Renaissance Tour has been a smash success, and a big part of that was the wardrobe she donned during her performance's that kept us all on the edge of our seats. As she travelled the world, she switched outfits constantly, bringing new and deeper meaning to each of the outfits that more often than not coincided with themes and expressed them even further. On top of that, she wore a range of fashion designers that is rather unprecedented as far as sheer quantity goes. With major brands like Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Fendi, Prada, Tiffany & Co., Gucci & more all creating custom looks for the shows, that would be enough for many. But Beyonce also inlaid fashion history not only of great houses like Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Courreges, Rabanne, Ralph Lauren, & Rick Owens but also of her own throughout referencing herself. And if that wasn't enough she also uplifted a host of young fashion designers like Brandon Blackwood, Robert Wun, Arturo Obegero, Del Core, Feben, & Tongoro Studios by exposing them and their aesthetics to millions in her audience. All in all, it was a masterpiece, a Renaissance by any definition, and she didn't even stop their. Her knowledge of black and queer history helped to weave storyline after storyline together with fashion brand's own history and house codes that had me playing fashion detective for months! And with the released of the Renaissance Tour Movie coming out, I couldn't help but want to explain her clothing choices a little bit further, in case some of their meanings get lost over time!

You sir, have such a masterful grasp on fashion. It’s mind blowing. I came here for the quipy roasting of bad celebrity fashion, but stayed for the educational and historical fashion contexts.

This video was so well made and thought out, I really appreciate that you researched the historical references and thought deeply about the metaphors and allusions in her ensembles. I am sure the making of this video was labor intensive but other installments of the story behind her fashion choices would be adored and appreciated! sending you love and thanks!

I needed this after watching Taylor wear the same sparkly bodysuit for every number in the Eras tour

Let's not drag one woman at the expense of praising another. Everyone has their own style. They are both queens. Taylor has very beautiful dresses at the folklore segment of the tour.

@@TaylorTaylor1989 I love Taylor but I was disappointed in the creative direction. I personally didn't feel there was enough variety in the silhouettes and aesthetics for the central theme of the tour, which was showcasing the breadth and variety of her work.

@@sarahnoll9018 agree, I adore The Eras Tour… But I'm not crazy about some of the costumes. They are too simple. Maybe the fact is that Taylor gets very tired of singing for 3 hours straight. And she has no time to change into complex and chic costumes…

i think she focused on giving us as many songs as possible during a 3.5 hour show. i wish her outfits were more interesting too but honestly it might be asking for too much at this point. she barely has time to change and put on her dress wrong quite a few times already

Thank you! I so wanted a breakdown all this summer on Bey's fashion. These houses wouldn't dress those girls back in the day, but Bey worked so hard they came out for this tour. Herrara, Lauren ... I think once the ball got rolling the houses didn't want to be left out.

Lewk #2 was directly inspired by the Birth of Venus by Bottecelli. Hence why she is introduced in the sea shell for the performance. It's a constant reference point for this era.

I can’t believe the amount of work you put into this video and detailing not only the outfits but the breakdown of themes in her concert. Even more so I can’t begin to imagine the work and fashion knowledge that went into creating them. Beyoncé and her team put so much work into everything but probably the most comprehensive costuming of a tour ever and witnessing it and trying to dissect it has been fun.

I loved this long video. I'm not a Beyonce fan, horrors - I know. but I love you and how you attack a subject. Like it's "no jive, Dude" energy. You dive in and I'm with you for the whole ride. I learn things I didn't know I wanted to know. Because of you I can pronounce Loewe when I see it in print. I really appreciate how you dig back into history to bring context to the fashions that are being shown. Your momma must be proud. If not, then I'm proud of you. Just saying... xoxo a grandma from SF, CA, USA.
