A lifelong Christian though not a nun, I resonate with the observation of one of the nuns that faith, although it does not remove worries/problems, gives you confidence. Looking back on my long life, I realise that this is profoundly true and I rejoice in it!

Interesting, my mum was a nun, I was born 1960 I remember how wonderful she described that way of life and that the priest or sister superior was like best friend one could have besides Jesus. I think the nuns of Italy in the 1940s for example may have seen life from different perspective to those of Great Britain. My mum spoke of it with such devotion and fond memories. Though this interview and presentation does really well in such short time period to give us a better understanding of what life is like in a convent in England it nonetheless shows they are connected to life outside into the big wide world as well and not merely being marginalized into confined space of a convent only.

Thank you for reply. I think there will always be societies within societies making of subcultures and so forth. Some people are deceived into cult following usually young people but not always the young. For example; hippie life may look attractive that is associeted with drugs but many drug dealers are very dangerous people. A police officer in London said to me he thinks drugs should be made legal but I feel at least by it being illegal there is some form of control. And message to people that it is dangerous way to live. Education does what it can but young people sometimes follow trends inspite of them being warned of the dangers. Sad we need to find out the hard way in life sometimes...

    • @StevePhillips

Agreed I think education and intelligence is more than half the battle; faith however is not much use unless backed up by actions rather than just mere words.

Steve Philips you are quite right in what you say and I admire you for your strength off character in this modern world. A calling is something very profound that is hard to describe in words because our language is objective and it is a subjective experience. It has nothing to do with other members of the Order or Congregation following us around, it has more to do with ones own very real need for a life of profound devotion and meditation that is hard to convey in words. It is good to be wary though, and convents give novices a long time to make up their mind if they feel a life of devotion is for them to make sure it is the right decision and even then, there are still stages of withdrawal to perhaps a third Order.

A number of surveys some years ago revealed that at least 40% of nuns were consciously lesbian. Though whether they were actively lesbian was not clear. It's hardly surprising that women with a same-sex attraction should seek out an all female community, whether or not they intended or hoped there would be some kind of sexual expression. It's also reasonable to assume there must be a good deal of lesbian sex in female religious orders. There sure is in male orders, and thinking women are just not as sexual is just daft.

When the younger nun started talking about her previous social life you could see the older sister watching her and thinking to herself... Watch what you say madam!! 🤣🙏
