Scotland fans react as German media brands Tartan Army the 'best in the world'

- Scotland fans have been labelled 'the friendliest Army in the world’ by Euro 2024 hosts Germany.
Around 200,000 Tartan Army foot soldiers descended on Munich last week for the country's Euro opener.
One week on, the kilted hordes have won the admiration of the host nation, with Germans declaring "we love you Scots."
German internet news service Blick carried a major piece on the history of the Tartan Army under the headline, ‘The history of the friendliest army in the world.’

I live in Würzburg and we saw Scottish fans in their kilts on the Alte Mainbrücke. Definitely a change from the usually older people and law students! (it's an old bridge in Würzburg where you drink wine)
The last time I was in Germany, my friends got the plane back home to Scotland and I stayed behind in Berlin myself for an extra week because I love it so much.

The scots can come back to the EU at any time.
There's little more nauseous than when a group continually dredge through media to find any form of compliment for themselves and then spend even more time then broadcasting that self same praise! We see it all the time during the season with Liverpool fans and Celtic fans and then during International matches, it's either us or the Irish. It's the epitome of egotistical behaviour and is such an embarrassment for those Scots like myself, who see straight through the B/S.
We're not even shouting at the rooftops about how great our fans are just to leave it at that. Oh NO, the REAL reason is because we're so crap @ fitba we need something else to brag about to the English. Their fans had a poor reputation for causing trouble back in the 80's and 90's, so we like to make ourselves look good, compared to them👍

Then what happened? England voted us out of the EU months later so it didn't matter! We got shafted in more than one way.

I was in Germany 🇩🇪 for 10 days for the Euros. Wonderful, welcoming and friendly people. We made great friends in the streets and bars of Koblenz, Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart. Thank you Germany and its people for looking after us so well. I love an Andechs beer now too! 😂🍺

It's been a while since I had an Andechs, but I can totally understand the craving for one.
As a Munich resident I've seen many kinds of fans come and go. Scottish fans stood out to me because I got to sit on my balcony at night hearing the sound of bag pipes in the city streets. Very nice.
I also have to say that Scots and Bavarians are just very compatible, it seems. Neither drink responsibly, but are experienced enough to avoid the worst outcomes. Both have their weird instruments and local garb and are barely understood by the mainland. Like brothers from another mother.
But I also gotta say that recent months and years have basically been full of culture war stuff, but most people don't experience any of that in their normal lives, they just see it online or in the news, but it still shapes expectations. Its essentially fear mongering.
In Germany there was a feeling of uncertainty before the Cup as a result of that. People expected violence, depending on whether you are more left or more right leaning you were either more concerned about terrorist attacks, or about Nazi chants and attacks.
So now many people are kind of relieved to experience that the vast majority of people are just good people looking to have a good time.
Maybe this is a little reality check in times were we are surrounded by stories of human depravity on the news all the time.
Scots genes are a mix of Pict, Irish, German, and Nord. So we get and understand all of you! We are essentially brothers and sisters and we always will be.
Love and respect from Scotland! May we one day all live in glorious peace and freedom ❤ It's about time Russia, China, North Korea and the US (as well as the entire of the Middle-East) got the memo! We just want peace ffs. So many millions fought and died for it and yet, here we are, still talking about war and corruption... Will humanity ever learn?

So now, after 80 years of relative peace, we see the corporate sphere aligning itself with the far-right again, this process is essentially the definition of fascism.

Because of the floods in many parts of southern Germany or Stuttgart, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate in May,
many of those affected were not happy to have the EM shortly afterwards.
The first priority was to repair the damage and many said: "Do we have to have the EM now?" "We have other things to worry about!"
Then the Scots gave us the most peaceful and beautiful moments and the floods of May were forgotten in many moments.
Many thought of riots and hooligans, but we were learnt otherwise. It was good that it was the European Championship and many fans were very respectful towards the hosts.
The Scottish fans showed us really nice and funny moments and joy of life.

Scottish is it's own language, not a dialect. It's a mix of English old and modern and old Scots and some Nordic thrown in. Many of our 'slang' words are derived from old Scots and Gaelic and have been around as long as their English word counterparts...
The Scottish Government officially recognise the Scots English as its own unique language spoken by a majority of Scots with its own dialects such as Glaswegian, Aberdonian, Dundonian and so forth. The sweet thing about Scots is that it varies from town to town! Armadale and Bathgate have different words or pronounce tge same words differently and are only a couple miles apart for example.

@@thevoicewithin9845that’s true. You learn English, achieve a C1 level, meet a Scot and think „what language is he speaking“ for half an hour before actually understanding the language and being able to communicate bidirectionally. That was my first experience years ago. 😉
But I just met some nice Scots from Perth a couple of days ago and had no problem understanding them. But I think all Scots I‘ve met were from that region.

Met 4 Scots in 2006, when out local hotels were overbooked and they stayed with us. Been friends since then, they are like uncles to our kids and brothers to us and vice versa. The first ones to call on our birthdays in the morning are our Scottish friends. Will never forget those great 2 weeks. Unfortunately, Scotland did not qualify for the WC in 2006, but great summer anyway.
