I hope you guys enjoy this updated video. I've covered this topic before but not in as much detail
Even though this video is an old video, it is incredibly helpful, I am photographing something different and recently intend to start with football again. Thanks for all your videos, hope you keep this up, so thanks for all the help you give us amateurs
Glad it was helpful!
I use a similar setup for basketball and baseball. The only two things I'd add are when you'r on a deadline for submitting the photos, it can be a real drag looking at the images from the remote's card to see if you got any keepers. To speed that up and not waste shots on the remote, I have attached (taped) the PW transmitter to my monopod or even set up a button to trigger it manually so I can still shoot with one camera and trigger the remote simultaneously. Sometimes it's fun to see both angles at once. Thanks for the video.
That's a good idea. I use it in hand fairly often, hadn't thought to attach it to the monopod
this is a great set up video. I would like to add that you can extend the distance of your remotes by making few adjustments in the remotes.
Hi. Rob. I have just picked up the neewer mini tripod. I have to say I am very, very happy with it, for the cost it’s a no brainer. Thanks.
Thanks "Past" and "Present" Rob 😁 for the video. In most games you see loads of remote cameras by the goal post,
1) How you deal with get the right spot for you?
2) Have you ever had any issues with other sport photographers at a game? If you did, how did you deal with it?
We know the photography world can be a bit over competitive and sometimes toxic.
Awesome content as usual 👌.
Yeah sometimes there are quite a lot. You just have to try and work together to get a good spot. It's kind of first one there gets the choice of spot. I've not any issues with other photographers no, yes it's competitive sometimes but I'm not one to spend anytime on squabbles for no reason.
Thank you so much for The good informations 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you Youssef
Hi, Rob great video does it matter if the camera body is set up for back button focus?
Great video! lots of help to get new ideas for future sports or action events working alone! Regards!
I'm glad you liked it
Very interesting! Technically can be adapted to other sports. Hoping for a fast (de)confinement and back to do what we love...but in a safely manner! Cheers
Yeah could work the same for numerous sports
great video rob, Once it all starts up again i will be trying some remote shots. Ive got the Yongnuo RF-602RX remotes and they fire from the hotshoe on my Nikon D500.
Thank you - ah cool it's good to hear they work. I previously used the 603's which don't.
Good video, Rob.
Cheers Jack
Hi Rob, thanks to your excellent video I have tried a goalcam on a couple of recent occasions and have been happy with the results. However, could you (or any of your excellent followers), clarify the use of AUTO ISO on the goalcam itself? Should I set the AF-Area Mode on the goalcam (I use a Nikon D500) to d25, Group or AUTO - or am I missing something and it doesn't matter?
Is there any other trigger that shoots wile in the hotshoe ???
Thanks for the video! Will one of the following cables work to trigger the shutter?
1 miniphone to miniphone cable
1 miniphone to PC cable
1 miniphone to phono adapter
Soccer (as we call it) is just starting with a spring season so I watched your tutorial again. Thank you, and a question - why not use Auto-ISO on your 1Dx and avoid necessary changes due to lighting variance such as clouds, sunset, artificial lighting coming on, etc. ?
The auto iso is decent on the 1dx. Generally though I'll stick to manual when I can. If light changes are continuous then I would use auto iso
Many photographers & RS are not aware of the ATG TTL/trigger that are built-in on ATG/Canon/Yongnuo.
You DO NOT need PW (overpriced/dated products).
An ATG transmitter or flash on camera (holding camera), 2,3, to 22 cameras with ATG flashes on parked cameras.
Once you pressed the holding camera those other will shutter remotely by wirelessly.
ATG's TTL/trigger are in ATG's ATG, Canon 600EX-RT & 600EX-II-RT & EL-1 and Yongnuo 600EX-RT II
Using flash during a game would be a red card offence.
@@ClareMcCahill For normal flashes that would be true. But not ATG's cameras & flashes.
@@ClareMcCahill Give it a try by converting your say Canon digital camera into Infrared.
Then using ATG IR flash or ATG IR TTL monolight, Then no sport players able to see the flash
Hi Rob I was just wondering. I shoot local soccer and the pocket wizards are quite expensive. I'm looking at the plus x or plus 3. Do the plus x do the sane as plus 3 as in, mount one plus x to one camera and the other to another camera elsewhere. I have only seen them used with flashes but I want to trigger one camera when I take a photo with another. I don't want to do it by just pressing a button. I want to fire both cameras when I'm using one 👍
Great video Rob does it matter if the camera body is set up with back button focus?
No. So long as you focus in advance and then switch the lens to manual focus (so it won't try to refocus) then you'll be fine
Just taken delivery of a couple of +iiie wizards and connected as you describe here Rob. Works fine. The Pocket Wizard manual suggests I should also use a cable from the camera to the wizard at the Transmit end as well. Supposedly gives a quicker response time. Have you ever found the need to do that or just use the transmit in the hot shoe?
That's interesting John, I might do some experimenting and see if it makes a difference.
Another great video will informative I have just bought what one of those wireless remotes but can't remember the name of it as it's not the one 1 mentioned on here.
As I purchased it last week but knowing that wish I have seen this video first when I get to try it I will have to post a comment on here to see how I get on with it and let you guys know.
Yeah let us know Scott definitely
Hey Rob, have you ever experimented with triggering the goal cam separately? ie, a separate shutter button for the goal cam mounted on your main body?
You mean via pressing the trigger manually? (like when I tested it). Yes I do that quite often
Looks like the Cambo Mini Tripod is no longer available. Newer version it is then. Great useful video Rob. I'm watching your videos in order so I'm slowly catching up.
Hey Rob, like your vids a lot. For the goalcam - are you allowed to set it up at premiere league or international league games? Do you get permission for that?
Can you trigger video with this camera remotes??
Have hit the LIKE button (to remember what videos I have watched) and subscribed :D
I appreciate it Erik thank you
@@RobSambles After nearly 20 years away from serious photography (got family), I started up again. Got used Canon gear - 7D2 + 6D + lenses. Looking for inspiration and want to go out there and make good pictures :D
@@juelraun Good for you man, I'm sure you will get some great ones
Thanks Rob, great video. Do you need to have the same frame rate as your main camera? Or does the remote camera just fire as much as it can to keep up with your main camera?
You can change it yes
Rob, Is it only the cables that make the Pocket Wizards work with different manufacturers. Are the pocket Wizards universal as I have a Nikon setup?
Yeah the PW themselves are universal
Hi Rob, cracking video as always. do you need an additional cable with the reciever i.e. a shutter release? daft quesiton maybe I know. just got a PW X. hope it works!
Yeah you'll need the cable on the receiver just like I do in the video here
@@RobSambles i meant an additional one rob. i.e.2. I use the normal 3 pin one in the camera, connecting to the reciever, but theres still something wrong. channels, camera etc identical.
have a top day!
@@PhotoSportiv Ah ok - if you've set it up like this video and using the right cable for your camera then it should work
Can you change channel mid game so the remote doesn’t fire, like if you are down field and there is no activity near the goal with the remote. Then go back to same channel to reset the link
What happens when it’s raining? Will you use a cover on the camera and triggers or just not use a remote camerQ?
Yeah I'd put a cover over it if I needed to do it in the rain
Hi Rob, would you set up the camera in the same way for an evening game? Say kick off at 5:15 in mid evening (good light) take in to account the lighting changes as it gets later/darker.
Also has your camera ever been struck by the ball?
In that situation your options are to either set it up so your are slightly overexposed to start with (so that as it gets darker you can hopefully still recover something) or ideally get to it at half time and change the settings
I haven't had one hit fortunately. It's worth trying to put it at an angle where it's slightly shielded. In reality though it's always a risk so don't do it without insurance.
Hi guys. I usually have the remote on auto iso if the game starts light and ends up dark.
Also, I’ve been unfortunate and had a shot go wide, bounce of the digital board and smash my PW off the body! So I now Velcro the PW to one of the legs on the tripod.
@@MarkKerton Ah that's interesting, I've only tried it with auto iso once. I'll play with that some more
@@RobSambles or you can set your camera to auto iso
Is there a way to shoot the handheld camera without triggering the remote camera and then turning on the remote camera on demand?
A foot pedal is a good option for that. Check out my other video about that
Does the pocket wizard keep the camera from going to sleep?
To stop it falling asleep fully you need the cable with the pre release. Link in description
I hope nobody ever has as much trouble as I did with radio interference. To make the triggers work around here, I need another pocket wizard in repeater mode and I need to mount the receiving pocket wizard to a small stand so it is 3 feet off the ground. Of course I learned this by shooting multiple games where the remote camera didn't fire.
Yeah interference is sometimes an issue, although I do find mine fairly reliable
Thanks, good info. I hope I can remember this next year when our government lets sports start again.
Yeah hopefully not too long
Words from the wise: if you set your camera up too early, it becomes a target - Don't ask me how I know. Set it up, check it's working, and take it out; just before kickoff (or when the players exit the field for the pre-game pep talk), put it back out.
Haha oh yeah that's definitely true!
