Yes, it's always funny (peculiar) to see the stars of such now-famous films when they're only just making them! You can't believe that they didn't even exist then! These are so enjoyable because they're funny, clever, gentle and clean. Talk about the 'good old days'! And I wasn't even born then. ☺️
Total respect for Eva Marie Saint. I've been reading up on her life (and she's still going at 96, now the oldest living Academy Award winner). "North by Northwest" was being shot here in September 1958, but Eva had just given birth to her second child on July 18 of that same year! I'm so impressed with her gradual ascent to fame and by her 65-year marriage in a city (Hollywood) where it was anything but the norm.
Reminds me a bit of Joan Leslie, she was only married once and actually left Hollywood to raise her family (Leslie actually rebelled against Warner Bros in the late 1940s to become a freelance actress because she was being presented in ways that went against her moral convictions and was sick and tired of being forced into child-like roles, despite being a grown young woman). On another note, Ms. Saint actually starred in some movies as late as the 2000s IIRC (she played the town librarian in an adaptation of the book "Because of Winn Dixie"). Talk about one long and impressive career!
Eva Marie Saint was ahead of her time. So stunningly beautiful but unlike most of her contemporaries, she exuded a razor sharp intelligence and wit, along with an air of independence and self-assurance that was unmatched.

Apart from MAYBE Grace Kelly, she was hands down the most confident starlet to ever appear in one of Hitchcock's movies (at least all the ones I've seen). My jaw drops at how direct her character is at flirting with Cary Grant's in North by Northwest, she was straight up trying to seduce him at times. Very empowering tones and themes in that film.
You beat me to it, sir. I've been counting the days and she made it. TCM began her "Star of the Month" tribute last night with "On the Waterfront," "North by Northwest" and "A Hatful of Rain." She has truly had a wonderful life beginning with parents who loved and encouraged her.
So beautiful that Eva Marie Saint made a point of stating that "North By Northwest" was written by Ernest Lehman. Ernest wrote this screenplay specifically for Hitch and believed it would be the ultimate Hitchcock movie with the theme of "the wrong man" being pursued. The picture continues to captivate audiences. Also, I had no idea that Tony Randall and Eva were so close.
@John Texas Certainly Cyd Charisse as much as I like her was wrong for that role. But I don't think it is like Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady at all. Julie Andrews starred in the role on Broadway and unlike Audrey Hepburn could sing well. At least Julie Andrews won the Oscar for Mary Poppins after she was snubbed for My Fair Lady.
@@preppysocks209 Eva Marie Saint was an all 'round better actress than the exceptional dancer and good actress, Cyd Charisse. But it cannot be ignored that Hitchcock loved his cool blondes and Saint could play her looks either hot or cool.
Yea, especially with the dining car scenes with Carey Grant. Her mission was to seduce Mr. Grant and she ended up seducing not only Mr. Grant but every adult and teenaged male who has ever watched it.
Interesting, though, that she was supposedly working on the picture in New York. In the film, she doesn't appear until the scene on the train, which must have been done in a studio. She's not in any of the N.Y. location shots. And did anybody notice that practically the entire train sequence shows them passing a lake on the left side. Longest lake in the world? @@CamhiRichard a lot of the "lake" is actually the Hudson River. Some of the landmarks pictured still remain. It is possible that some of the hotels or the auction house or the train station, where she appeared, although supposedly in Chicago, were actually filmed in NY.
in addition, Hitchcock was not happy with the dresses that were designed for her. He wrote (and you can hear this in a TCM interview that Ben Mankiewicz did with EMS around 2011) that he took her to Bergdorf Goodman and allowed her to select her own wardrobe that would enhance her ability to play a "sexy spy lady."
Bigfoot Mangiacavallo; as already pointed out that "lake" is the Hudson River. The actual location of Grand Central Terminal was filmed--the concourse--was filmed on location. The underground sequence of the platform and boarding the train was at the studio. You should especially note the Cary Grant is walking on the red carpet of The 20th Century Limited that was indeed used for the boarding of that train in real life. The Hotel that Grant is spirited out of by the two thugs is actually The Plaza Hotel, still around.

I do remember the Kellogg's "variety pak", the small boxes of cereals with the dotted lines where you would cut and fan out to pour your milk into. My father would bring them on camping trips with the six of us kids, so we could chose our cereals.
+Dick Wilson Yes, there were once four product lines of Kellogg's miniature-packs' cereals. And by "healthy" I mean traditional "adult" cereals such as "Corn Flakes," "Product 19," "Shredded Wheat," and "Special K." Additionally, General Mills has its "Breakfast Pack" of 10 cereals. I eat "Honey Nut Cheerios" in regular box size three or four days a week already. But, when I am in the mood, I can still enjoy some "Trix" or "Lucky Charms" (am I imagining it, or have the marshmallows become smaller and less tasty?). How coincidental that I just saw North by Northwest on the big screen two nights ago as part of one of our chains Hitchcocktober event. When she said she was in NYC for a shopping trip, I remember reading that Alfred Hitchcock took her to Bergdorf Goodman to shop for the movie. Love seeing it on the big screen!!
Eva Marie Saint's nasal accent is nifty, for obfuscation purposes. Also, since I had to look it up, the Hayden in question is Jeffrey, who turns out to be an incredibly prolific TV director and producer. They have a long-term marriage and a couple of kids, and are both in their 90s.
Mr. Hayden died in 2016 but the two were married for 65 years, a rarity in Hollywood. Ms Saint could have pursued more film roles but she prioritized family as well, with apparently very happy results. She still is active and appears on TV, although she is approaching 95!
waccamatt yeah , because so much has improved in the last 60 years- So in order to improve those things, let’s be mean and rude to each other . Yes there were a lot of social injustices back then. But there were also a lot of people trying to change things. I can only imagine 60 years from now- when future generations look at our behaviors and how we spoke and treated each other - whether on social media or otherwise. We today are hypocrites to criticize ‘back then’ when it’s much worse today.
@@dawnfalvey6766 Well said, Dawn. C.S. Lewis called the criticism of people from earlier times for not thinking the way we do now "chronological snobbery".
Exactly….I couldn’t have stated it better myself…look at the behavior of people on planes, and look at how trashy, and yes I said how trashy women dress today…there should by a law against a size 18 cow trying to stuff her enormous butt into a size 2 pair of leggings, all of our eyes need a break.
I had started first grade around this time (Labor Day was on Sept. 1 and we probably started school sometime during that week). In NYC at the time, first graders went to school longer than the half day of kindergarten, but shorter than a full day (which started in second grade, including a lunch period for the first time in my schooling). When we were dismissed, we sang a song with lyrics that are a variation of a song that starts with "Now run along home and jump into bed." Because it was early in the afternoon, our song went: "Now run along home and have a good lunch; change your clothes and then join the bunch." I forget the next line, but I remember it ended with "and don't you forget: do your homework and then go to bed." One of my classmates, Todd Greenberg, always changed it to "watch television, do your homework and then go to bed." We wouldn't be watching WML, however. It would have been cartoons or "Superman" or some other kid favorite show.
I just saw NxNW in the cinema last night (part of a "throwback" series). Having become hooked on What's My Line, I had to check if she appeared around that time. And sure enough...
Saint is the oldest living and earliest surviving Academy Award-winner, and one of the last living stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She turned 100, 4th of July 2024! 🎉happy belated birthday! 💛💜
Great stuff! I assume the reason why Ms. Saint stumbled a little on the name of the film because the working title had originally been "In a Northwesterly Direction."
The shopping trip mentioned by E.M.S. is now part of film history. Hitchcock disliking the MGM costume designs took his leading lady to Bergdorf Goodman to chose from the upcoming collections, my guess is the fabulous dress Eva wears for this show is from that trip although not used in the film. Glorious to see this episode
I have written a very similar post before about this. This show gives you the feeling it is in the present, not the past. Look at the comments. People write Dorothy looks good tonight or what is Bennett referring to? This is the only show I have seen this happen on. Maybe we are all wishing it so.
@@slaytonp I was just about to say that, lol. I have a theory that if every human being were to make a noise of ANY kind at the exact same moment, the violent vibrations from that event would be enough to shatter the planet into a series of tectonic shifts and earthquakes sufficient to devour us all. Just one sound. A laugh. A sneeze. A called out word or name. The crack of a bat. Setting a heavy sack of groceries down on the kitchen counter. A guitar chord. A whistle. On and on. All at once: splat!
Not easy to make Arlene look like chopped liver but EMS pulled it off.Thank God the 95 year old EMS is still kicking it.An all time classic beauty with the talent to match it.Her genuine friendship with TR is priceless.
I thought Arlene Francis looked gorgeous in this episode. Her halter dress is stunning. I've never thought Eva Marie Saint was beautiful. Pretty, but that's about it. I guess the blonde pageboy was her signature hairstyle, but it was always plastered down with hairspray. Looser would have been more flattering. Great movie she was making.
Watching North by Northwest and other Hitchcock movies over and over now. Eva Marie Saint was fantastic in North by Northwest. And she was married to the same one man her entire marriageable life. What was it, 60 some years? With all the leading men in her career - Carey Grant, Marlon Brando, etc. - she resisted the typical Hollywood promiscuity. Eva Marie Saint turns 100 years old in just over a month!!!! Yes, she is still with us!
Tony's still-to-be-filmed new picture, announced by Dorothy as "Darling Buds of May," ultimately was released as "The Mating Game," starring Randall in one of his relatively few leading man roles.
Eva Marie Saint was astonished when Hitchcock chose her to be a classic 'Hitchcock Blonde' in the Grace Kelly mold. She got the full glamor treatment, Edith Head gowns etc. and having made several 'working class dramas' it was a dream come true. I find it hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
My late father grew up in the same town, Bethlehem, NY and waited on her many times when he worked in the local Pharmacy. She would always ask for him when she came in.
Look at the authoritativeness of the queens guard officer... very military-officer like attitude, and how he says "No" with that posh british accent really gives us the "class" of hes job...
These people's lives did not exist outside of the upper East Side townhouses of Manhattan.. or Westchester.....that movie theaters existed in the Bronx, Brooklyn, queens or New Jersey was not in their scope of thinking....
There would be occasional mentions of Brooklyn. I think Arlene and Martin lived in Riverdale at one point, and Bennett lived in Mount Kisco. But Queens, Lomg Island and New Jersey may have been on the moon as far as they were concerned, I can only remember Queens being mentioned in reference to the World's Fair.
@@preppysocks209 My favorite Hitchcock movies in order are Rear Window, North by Northwest, and Vertigo. Vertigo has the most fascinating plot but its mood is so dark. Rear Window is the easiest to watch again & again, and it has moments of humor and romance. North by Northwest is very intriguing, and you're always wondering if Cary Grant's character Roger Thornhill is really who he says he is. Gorgeous love theme.

I believe it was a reference to Bennett Cerf's role as one of the judges at the Miss America pageant which had been held in Atlantic City, The winner, Mary Ann Mobley (who went on to be an actress) was Miss Mississippi prior to winning the Miss America contest. John Daly is giving Bennett a hard time (teasingly) for the choice. I'm not quite sure why though as neither Miss New York nor Miss Massachusetts were in the top ten. The only top ten finalist from the NY / New England area was Miss Connecticut. Miss Mobley's home state, however, does explain John Daly's pun about Bennett's name being mud.
Of all the beautiful, wonderful women they've had on here, Eva Marie Saint is.............the one and only. And to think this happened in the middle of filming "North by Northwest"! That train dining car scene; if only real life could be like that.......mamamia.
Absolutely. The dining car scene was so memorable. But it bothered me....did they ever get around to eating the brook trout 😏? John Daly and Tony Randall seemed a little irritated with each other during the Eva Marie Saint feature...live late night Sunday television broadcasts, schedule limitations and general tiredness would have occasionally taken their toll. I am just amazed how Mr Daly and the panel managed to sparkle most of the time though.
Unless I am losing my mind, this must have been the third or fourth fire eater I have seen on this show. I am surprised that the panel didn't pick upon this quicker.
That little flick of Eva's left leg at 25.01 as she gave her friend Tony Randall a kiss was just adorable .. and very sexy ! .. She was as classy and humorous as she was beautiful .. Really enjoyed watching her !
I'm so disappointed that they didn't have Cary Grant on as a mystery guest, especially on this episode. It would've been neat, and I'd like to imagine that the whistling and cheering from the audience would've been much louder.

Tony and the audience love Eva Marie, and so do we!
She is lovely
Eva Marie Saint's nasal accent is nifty, for obfuscation purposes. Also, since I had to look it up, the Hayden in question is Jeffrey, who turns out to be an incredibly prolific TV director and producer. They have a long-term marriage and a couple of kids, and are both in their 90s.
Mr. Hayden died in 2016 but the two were married for 65 years, a rarity in Hollywood. Ms Saint could have pursued more film roles but she prioritized family as well, with apparently very happy results. She still is active and appears on TV, although she is approaching 95!
People had such good manners and decorum back then.....it’s so sad to see how far we’ve fallen since then.
Good manners? I guess women were unable to sit down without a man holding the chair and looking smug.
Unless you were African-American or LGBT or a woman wanting equal pay.
waccamatt yeah , because so much has improved in the last 60 years- So in order to improve those things, let’s be mean and rude to each other .
When we were dismissed, we sang a song with lyrics that are a variation of a song that starts with "Now run along home and jump into bed." Because it was early in the afternoon, our song went:
"Now run along home and have a good lunch; change your clothes and then join the bunch." I forget the next line, but I remember it ended with "and don't you forget: do your homework and then go to bed." One of my classmates, Todd Greenberg, always changed it to "watch television, do your homework and then go to bed." We wouldn't be watching WML, however. It would have been cartoons or "Superman" or some other kid favorite show.
I just saw NxNW in the cinema last night (part of a "throwback" series). Having become hooked on What's My Line, I had to check if she appeared around that time. And sure enough...
Ms. Saint is 99 as of November 2023
Saint is the oldest living and earliest surviving Academy Award-winner, and one of the last living stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
She turned 100, 4th of July 2024!
🎉happy belated birthday!
💛💜
believe it or not, 1958 was the year in which Tony Randall was nominated for a Tony, which, according to wikipedia, was for his dancing
Eva is as clever and funny as she is deeply beautiful. A treasure!
Agreed.
OMG she is ever sooo lovely1
Always lovely but never more beautiful than in "Ön the Waterfront".
Wow, that leg kick at 25:01. Even the men in the audience noticed and responded to it.
Eva Marie Saint is the queen of all actresses and the most authentic person ever to bless that land of the lost, Hollywood..
21:34 - That little wink and grin.
She really is beautiful
I just fell in love with Eva Marie Saint.
It's about time!
I Am My Greatest Mistake I fell in love with her when I saw her in "on the waterfront". What a cutie puff.
Join the club.
Get in line.
Eva. Stunning woman 😊
25:35 I almost feel like writing them to go to the show and meet the panel, even though I'm 61.5 years too late. Maybe there will be a time warp.
I have written a very similar post before about this. This show gives you the feeling it is in the present, not the past. Look at the comments. People write Dorothy looks good tonight or what is Bennett referring to? This is the only show I have seen this happen on. Maybe we are all wishing it so.
@@saran3214 Time is an entity that exists to keep everything from happening at once.
Eva Marie Saint. Still alive and working in 2020!
Lovely Lady Eva!
The great thing is Eva Marie Saint is still with us.
Her 100th birthday in just over a month!
The major doesn't look too happy that John was leaning on and grabbing his sword.
MECowgo Would any real man be happy if another man leaned on his sword?
I can't discern any emotion on his part in any way…
"But if you're going to be in it it's going to be good."
Oh boy, is it ever going to be good.
A mediocre actor... Smoke and closeted....
@@tedthomas1993 your about as sick as it gets.hope mommy is proud of the monster she created.your proof that mommy should have swallowed.
@@tedthomas1993: Actually, he wasn't.
Eva Marie Saint is so charming and beautiful! Still with us at 95! (lucky us!)
She's still alive... And 96.
@@su8483 And she's still alive. 97 now. :)
"Don't touch my sword" :]
My late father grew up in the same town, Bethlehem, NY and waited on her many times when he worked in the local Pharmacy. She would always ask for him when she came in.
I felt sorry for the British guard.
he is going to have to spend the rest of the night polishing that sword after john molested it.
Watch Tony's lips mouth John's words at 17:22
Eva Marie Saint is still alive & 98yo!
That's nice to hear.

Look at the authoritativeness of the queens guard officer... very military-officer like attitude, and how he says "No" with that posh british accent really gives us the "class" of hes job...
Eh, hardly a surprise that a major would have a ' very military-officer like attitude '.
Someone who "calls out for square dances" is properly called a "square dance caller". Square dancers would simply refer to him or her as "the caller".
Eva Marie Saint was elegant!
She’s still alive at 98 years old in 2022.
"Playing in one of the big Broadway Movie Houses" OMG - the great days of Broadway before Times Square was just a touristic, tacky sort of Disneyland!
you mean it isn't now?
These people's lives did not exist outside of the upper East Side townhouses of Manhattan.. or Westchester.....that movie theaters existed in the Bronx, Brooklyn, queens or New Jersey was not in their scope of thinking....
There would be occasional mentions of Brooklyn. I think Arlene and Martin lived in Riverdale at one point, and Bennett lived in Mount Kisco. But Queens, Lomg Island and New Jersey may have been on the moon as far as they were concerned, I can only remember Queens being mentioned in reference to the World's Fair.
Miss Saint featured long hair until Alfred Hitchcock had her cut it short for "North By Northwest" as more fitting for her character in that movie.
I liked her longer hair in "Waterfront"
@@m.e.d.7997 dude EMS bald would still be a ravishing beauty.
John Charles daily has a great voice
North by Northwest is my favorite Hitch movie❤️❤️
It is excellent but Rear Window is just as good if not better.
North by Northwest is one of my favorites! Another great one is Charade!
Totally agree!
Eva Marie Saint 100 años una leyenda viviente del cine la recordamos en Intriga Internacional 1959 y Nido de ratas 1954.

“Yeah I’m working on a little picture called North by Northwest, not too big a deal”
Tony wanted to clarify his EMS question, but John, who was no Carson, Par nor Allen, shot him down. #DeputyDaly
I think it due to time restraints and the need for a commercial: Daly was just following procedure.
John Daly seems a bit slow on this episode... I wonder what was going on.
robbycan,
I noticed that too.
you are the only one, that I've seen, that was sensitive to this.
Eva Marie Saint - simply lovely
*_Buckingham Palace Guard_*
*_Professional Fire Eater_*
Can anyone shed some light on the Jon Daly/Bennet Cerf 'tiff' referenced at the beginning of the show?
Here is the history behind the term “Mississippi Mud” as it relates to a song. In case anyone is wondering. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_Mud
Of all the beautiful, wonderful women they've had on here, Eva Marie Saint is.............the one and only. And to think this happened in the middle of filming "North by Northwest"! That train dining car scene; if only real life could be like that.......mamamia.
I can’t think of any other WML mystery guest who surpassed her combination of beauty, brains, and rapier-like sense of humor.
@@TheProfessorpat Neither can I. Naturally stunning woman.
North By Northwest is an amazing, wonderful film, my personal favorite of Alfred's
Aww, EMS was so lovely here.

The fire eater Helen Straus died in 1993 at 83yo! RIP.
She is beautiful
Arlene was particularly radiant in this episode.
Happy birthday 100 years old
Wonderful. I just checked and she had only one husband, Jeffrey Hayden, 1956-2026. Movie stars usually have several marriages.
Unless I am losing my mind, this must have been the third or fourth fire eater I have seen on this show. I am surprised that the panel didn't pick upon this quicker.
Still with us at age 98
Eva gave more info than was needed , by adding romance in the movie
love her
Eva Marie Saint is definitely a cutie.
Tony Randall was so handsome and cute.
This was a year before North by Northwest.
Arlene is simply the loveliest!
