As a former student of Prof. Richardson’s, I can’t express how teary-eyed I got when the audience stood for her. I’m not pretentious enough to say I’m proud of her, because her accomplishments had nothing to do with me, but I’m overwhelmingly proud to have been her student, to have had private chats with her, and to have known her before she became such a public figure. For anyone wondering: in person, one-on-one, she’s the same person she is in her talks and interviews: smart, funny, gracious, and generous. Not at all an extremist or shill for any political “side.”
I’ll always be grateful that I got the chance to work with her on my writing.
I hope she stays healthy as she embarks on this book tour. We need her!

She's an old fashioned academic though. Enough money to not worry about money is all that's really desired on that front. A bit of respect/prestige is more important. But the main thing is making a positive contribution to her field and society... and her main tool to do that is educating folks.

It is actually good to now human beings have a built in negative bias. Knowing this we can understand of overcome our weaknesses or temptations as individuals and as a people. I look at the evening NEWS as showing us the exceptions not the rule of how we live.

As long as you see what bias lies at the base of her particular take on history take it as one view of many of American history then she is likely to be a great source for her faction. For instance, a democracy usually devolves into what is known as Tyranny of the Majority, which explains a lot about how the Democrat Party would like to rule over the last 120 or so years, and it also explains quite a bit about why the Founding Fathers organized the United States as a Constitutional Republic, expressly designed to keep the passions of the present at bay, and protect minority factions from over-reaching sentiments that create the climate for true Tyranny. I find you get a lot of understanding from first accounts..... So, Thomas Jefferson"s Letters, is a good example.

I'm glad that you mention "the flag" , my neighbors think that I'm a trumper because I have a flag out front of my house. How sad is that?
Sadly republicans somehow think they own the flag, and when progressives see it they might assume the same. I put a flag on my house and thought I might be regarded as a Trumper also.
I think that's due to Trump trying to usurp the flag and patriotism . He tells all his followers that all his opponents hate America. I love America, always have. But I don't love Trump.

The thing is, the trumpers also think that. And it's not just trumpers. The Republican Party, in general, has made the flag a part of their messaging, back at least to the 1960s. Probably earlier. Obama was criticized for "failure" to wear a flag pin on his suit. Yet, guess who "failed" to have a flag pin on his suit at his inauguration. But,the song goes, "Your flag decal won't get you into Heaven any more .. "
The right has appropriated many American symbols, like the flag and the troops, and the left has demonized any American who them defend/like any of those symbols as either evil or brainwashed/dumb. There are no heroes in the history of human beings. Watch Carlin last HBO specials. There was a brilliant/sensitive white person who experienced first hand the 1950’s-‘1990’s, and his comedy was the product. So before the right continues to be, rightfully I will say, attacked, remember to look at the sins of the other side so we can understand why the country’s future looks so bleak when 30 years ago it looked/felt so bright. It’s sad.
Just like in this current iteration of the crisis in Palestine. Horrendous/hideous behavior by Hamas, unspeakable violence/horror/terror, perpetrated against a nation who hasn’t cared to keep doing unto others what was once done unto them. And the cycle goes on and on and on. It’s called humanity. We have been doing this since the beginning.

I try to get as many people to read HCR as possible. I see her writing as one possible way of saving this nation. That sounds dramatic, but it is an unfortunate truth. Rock solid history is not left, right, conservative or liberal. It's as close to objective truth as we have and we need HCR. Plug here for MeidasTouch Network because they are lawyers primarily and will read along court documents with sober analysis, the actual court documents that people need to read. Thank you, thank you, thank you HCR for doing all you do to keep factual history relevant today. It is important beyond measure.
I don’t think it’s dramatic to say a level-headed historian’s work has the capacity to help our country. I think you’re spot on!
Audible is the greatest tool ever. I never had time to read nor did I want to sit with my face in a book on the rare occasion I had free time. About 4 or 4 years ago, I decided to give Audible a try and now I go crazy without something in my library ready to go. I listen daily on my 35-45 minute commute to work. I can always complete one chapter at a time. My love for history and politics has quadrupled since I began listening to books. I started HCR’s new book two days ago and she never disappoints.
I just retired from 30+ years of driving truck. I listened to 10's of thousands of audio books. Audible is great, yes. But look into your local Library too. They have books-on-CD and downloadable files too.
I am such a fan of Prof. Cox Richardson. What a treat to end my Saturday! Two brilliant speakers!
It should be noted that the deterioration of genuine democracy that has occurred over the last 40 years, very closely parallels the deterioration of the natural world that has occurred within the same time frame. I believe that the two phenomena are very closely related in their origins and contemporary results.

I agree. There is a direct correlation. Sort of a macrocosm of the microcosm. When Jimmy Carter was president he had solar panels installed on the White House roof. He had the foresight of Teddy Roosevelt, and took notice of what scientists were already telling us. That the earth was suffering from human exploitation and pollution. And then Reagan became president and tore down the solar panels. People still revere Reagan, but I believe he set our planet on a path of destruction. Forty odd years later, it’s only gotten worse. Reagan started a trend that reveres greed above most everything else. You can follow that path to our current day political insanity. It should come as no surprise that we ended up with a career-anything-for-a-buck-grifter in the White House.

What a wonderful conversation that asks us each the questions we need to answer to define how to navigate through the next election cycle that saves our democracy or not! Heather said at 9:40 minutes "...either you believe everyone should be treated equally before the law and have a say in their government OR some are better than others and should therefore rule..." AND Meghna said at 50 minutes "...you define yourself as an American...who is to care for your fellow human OR as a Consumer who's self-satisfaction is your primary reason for loving this country..."

I would live to hear what HCR has to say about the deterioration of our education system, and how it has affected our ability as citizens to make informed, "wise decisions". Her own intellectual assessments stand in stark contrast to our national "beliefs" and the story that is being promulgated from Capitol Hill.
When I watched the rapacious mob surging up the steps of the Capitol on Jan. 6 I had the flash thought: There go the products of the American education system. Followed by: How in the hell is this even possible? Demoralizing.

I can tell you that it started with Reagan promoting the idea that public schools were failing (contrary to research). Schools had been underfunded for some time. Then began the privatization of schools thru funding of charter schools and vouchers and promotion of fear of integrated public schools. They blamed the poor and cut social services. States began promoting traditional teaching methods (uniforms & rote learning) that was outdated and out of step with learning research. …hmm maybe I should write the book. 😂

History in high school was my least favorite class (got a D) but one day the teacher asked us what we thought would be the most interesting time period, or event, to experience if given the chance to go back. I chose the Depression - and was swiftly denigrated and laughed at by the teacher, as well as other students (mostly boys who wanted to be in the big wars). Asked why I'd choose such a horrific and trying period, I replied that it seemed to me to also be a time when people started to gather together and share what they had with those who had even less. That it, like Heather says here, was a time of necessary real-time humanity to each other in order to just survive daily. It possessed a national community spirit that pervaded all the states for everyone to do their personal best to help everyone else until a government-led solution was found. Are we now in that same kind of situation? No, sadly.
The OK diners are still serving up the same old noxious plates of 'party' hate, stuck in a time-frame that no longer serves anyone except their politicians who keep handing out the same old pathetic, now even deadly recipes. Towards what end?? The fractal created by this hate and greed if allowed to fester will only continue to grow even more fractals of the same death march of our species. The Universe didn't go to so much trouble to create us just to become extinct by our own hands. Our only path forward is to keep pushing toward that individual, self-realizing freedom that only democracy can bring. The gop party leadership doesn't want our freedom; it only wants our malleable obedience, lifelong sacrifice, and above all profits we create that keep them, not us, as rich and powerful as history has granted them for fucking centuries on end. It's time to stop this bullshit, as so many are now realizing.
Science-wise, modern humans who consistently care about others, towards that future of a humane humanity, have a more developed/pronounced anterior cingulate than those trapped in self-serving racism and bigotry. This has been tested again and again but it isn't newsworthy enough (esp papers owned by conservatives). The AC is an evolutionary event serving our species survival but not in a physical way. It's a mental concept way that directs us to simply get along by caring about one another. Not warring, not exclusionary dictates, not obedience to venal ethereal entities. Just caring about ourselves and each other in healthy progressing ways, to keep the species alive. The Universe purposely gave us this because it wants us to be a successful experiment. Least we can do is make the most of it.

Her fact-based knowledge, genuine caring, but especially her baseline "real human" sober and adroit qualities are always present and willing to be shared with others. And she doesn't pull punches when others try to sway the conversation or cut her off - all done politely but with backed conviction to tell it like it is. She totally understands how serious the depth of gop BS we are in these days and the necessity to get this known by all citizens. All this culminates in more than a bowing before someone especially awesome - it is far more standing next to her and yelling "YES!!". I'm glad you are here as well.

I do empathize and resonate with her own attitude. She loves reading and learning, but she hates formal education. That has always been my attitude as well. Through self-education, I've learned a thousand times more than I ever did in all my years of public education.
It seems to me that most teachers I had hated school as much as their students. If they ever had passion for teaching, the oppressive education system had killed it in them by the time I met them. I can only think of one teacher I ever had who was truly inspired to teach.
I do give credit to my parents who worked in the teaching profession. They did model for me a basic love of learning, intellectual curiosity about the world, and critical thinking. But I must admit that even my parents, including my father as a professor, are largely ignorant about American and world history.
Ask most Americans to name one revolt in early America other than the American Revolution. They won't be able to tell you. Ask most Americans what was the name of the two sides of early constitutional debate and what were the disagreements. They won't be able to tell you.
Yet all of such info tells us everything about where we are at present and what brought us here. We are essentially still having many of the same constitutional, political, economic, social, and moral debates that were going on in the 1700s. It's because of historical amnesia that we keep repeating the past.
I have been listening to HRC ever since she made an appearance on Great Boston.
HCR is the best-read her letters daily and just got her book. And I love that in the thumbnail for this video, she’s wearing a WoodenBoat School logo cap. We visited the school this summer while sailing the Midcoast. Fascinating place.

Well what the heck? Here I am in New Hampshire. HCR is so amazing. I saw this a little this morning. Now I have to mention Arlie Russell Hochschild. A sociologist from California who wrote about Louisiana. To hear that HCR was a waitress in Oklahoma??? Oh my goodness. There ya go. I was trained by sociologists in a non accredited MSW program here and then shifted for two years to Tulane School of Social Work. Yada Yada. Read Arlie's book too. "Strangers in Their Own Land." It's still like that in Louisiana. (not gonna lie.). My philosophy ~ the long view. Another author and book: "Constantines's Sword" ~ James Carroll. A very long look at ups and downs of (the fascist tool box). ~ "via Christians versus Jews ~ I agree with Heather. The long view. Mostly just ~ "Oh well." Never mind about EDC ~ (every day carry) ~ another subject ~ whew! ✨🌸🙏🌸✨

I recommend her excellent book, "How The South Won The Civil War." Depressing as heck but does a lot to explain how we got into our present mess.

No civil war simply because of the logistics. The war was North vs. south. Today sympathizers of the Trump side are all over America, not dwelling simply in the south. Secondly, the military is more cohesive due to alterations in command and loyalties from the lessons learned.

Would like to see a debate between Victor Davis Hanson and Ms Richardson. That would be interesting.
We need a consensus REPUBLIC, not a "majority rule" democracy. Leaving masses of angry, disenfranchised-feeling people after a "democratic vote" is untenable any longer. And using violence (laws, courts, police, etc) to dominate the angry minority is NOT the answer. We need a government comprised of small groups at the local level who use CONSENSUS to find common ground--which is always there. They send representatives to the state level for more consensus. They send representatives to the federal level for more consensus decision-making. There is no need for a president in this system.
Included in the consensus decision-making should be a "Talking and Listening Process." One side speaks about their beliefs, then the opposition REPEATS WHAT THEY HEARD. tHEY CAN PARAPHRASE WHAT THEY HEARD, BUT CANNOT ADD REBUTTAL AT THIS POINT. When the first side has expressed everything in small, short sound bytes, and the opposition has repeated back what they heard (with corrections from the first side), then the first side retires and the second side begins to express their point of view in small sound bytes. The first side repeats what they heard and corrects their hearing as requested by the other speaker. The second side can go on, as did the first side, until they have ade all of their major points and they FEEL HEARD by the other side.
The two sides can go back and forth as many times as needed until both sides feel heard. Then further discussion aimed at finding COMMON GROUND can take place in a harmonious, both-sides-feeling-heard, process. This is a picture of a PURE Republic. It is not based on combatting egos. It is based on our innate belief that a harmonious WIN/WIN situation is desirable, and is ALWAYS possible.
With the electoral college and two Senators per states, we have "minority rule." Red and rural states and counties have too much power, along with anti-democratic gerrymandering.

The supreme court decisions regarding witnesses to US military soldiers guarding bin Laden's camp in Afghanistan and holding them at Guantanamo Bay Cuba without hearing or trial was criminal beyond a reasonable doubt. The supreme court decisions have repeatedly crossed the lines on unconstitutional and criminal beyond a reasonable doubt too many times without appropriate legal effort. Abortion and concealed weapons permit both claim the constitution does not reserve the rights of the American people. The clarification in the second precedent claims you can't regulate a right you don't have.

An economy is built or improved from the bottom up and we have not enforced the 1939 minimum wage act or. Social security act correctly locally by police and welfare departments rightfully expect expect enough income to reliably pay the rent for one bedroom apartment local commute. The snow ball economics become trickle down economics and bidenomics. The price of epipens increased dramatically because the VX released from the chemical weapon dump in Georgia killed people across N Africa and all nut allergy and peanut allergy people in 2011. The Mongolia and Tibet evacuation in Aug 2011 brought Chinese battle ships to the Republican debate at the Nixon library. But they were only parked off the coast near Long Beach California in protest of the massive Treaty violations endangering the people of the USA and China.

That's precisely why our founding founders only enfranchised property owners. When we abolished this requirement, we should've found a way to ensure that the uneducated masses-who are typically not property owners, by the way-won't tear down our entire democratic system by electing demagogues like Trump who deceive them and promise them the world.
Our founding fathers were well aware of Socrates' critique of democracy-that it's vulnerable to demagoguery -and purposely limited the right to vote to people who had what to lose by destroying their entire democratic system.
I understand that property ownership isn't the best way to ensure an educated voter with a stake in the democratic process; still, that doesn't mean our only alternative is to enfranchise the entire population. There must be a better way. I only wish I knew what it was ...

To me, I believe the original colonies were established haphazardly and this created very different colonies. The transition from colony to state was a compromise needed to satisfy the oligarchs of the 13 colonies, so states were given "rights" to enable the transition, that is, to win the approval of the wealthy and powerful families who ruled in the various states. Just a thought.
If you really believe you have a good hypothesis on that matter, maybe you should do some deep digging research and write your own book with the appropriate citations that back up your hypothesis. Just a suggestion. Otherwise, I will go with those historians who have spent years and years studying and researching and have already done their due diligence and shared it with us.

That makes sense , to pacify them when the right of each colony to negotiate with other nations altering their economy and the economies of surrounding colonies, was taken away, it's possible state rights were likely introduced . But Gore Vidal always said the oligarchs were given the Senate .
Aristotle noted that since there are far more poor people than rich people, why wouldn't poor people simply vote to confiscate their wealth to benefit themselves? Madison created the Senate along with the Electoral College to protect the rich from the poor. Gore Vidal was right. If we transferred the powers of the Senate to the House and eliminated the Electoral College - leaving the Senate a ceremonial body like the House of Lords - Aristotle's concern would remain.
