THE ANNANDALE WAY - Moffat & the Devil's Beef Tub

  • A hike on part of the Annandale Way, from Moffat to the Devil's Beef Tub, and back to Moffat, a trek of around 13 miles.
    The Annandale Way is one of Scotland's long-distance walking trails. It's about 56 miles in total, following the course of the River Annan from its source close to the Devil's Beef Tub, north of Moffat, all the way to the Solway Firth and the sea. The route from Moffat heading south passes through Lochmaben or Lockerbie, depending on which of two routes you choose, and finishes close to the town of Annan.
    I decided to stay overnight in Moffat, and after a good sleep and a massive breakfast in the Buccleuch Arms Hotel (a great stopover for bikers and anyone enjoying the great outdoors in this area) I headed north towards the hills in a sweltering heat.
    At Ericstane, after around 4 miles on a narrow country road, the route takes you up into the hills by Spout Craig, along Chalk Rig Edge and the Great Hill, and on to the trig-point on the highest part of today's walk: Annanhead Hill, at 478 metres above sea-level. From there it was a gentle descent onto the A701 and great views of the Devil's Beef Tub, so-named as it was used to hide stolen cattle hundreds of years ago. Views on the way back to that same small country road that we started on were out of this world.
    A great walk in a stunning area of Scotland.

    Another excellent video thanks Ed. Such a lovely day to be strolling the hills, albeit maybe a little too hot. The area certainly is picturesque. Thanks for sharing.

    The quality red sandstone is from Templand quarry. Kelvin Hall was built from the same stone

    Hi,I thought tou were saying muppet made me chuckle. l loked it up and it is Mof+uht.
    Looks a bit bigger than I remeber,being snow stranded there on the way back from London
    in1985.
    Walking in the hills in hot sunny weather is very draining,the air seems less energy friendly.

    Hi Ed, another great video, Moffat and the surrounding area area favourite of me and the wife, and indeed her father and mother. I've not walked a lot in the area apart from low level street stuff.

      There are some shorter walks signposted in the area, like one for Gallow Hill, etc.

    Ed, you ringing the bell and running from 'the wood gatherer' gave me a good laugh! Nice to see your walk and thanks for the info as usual. I had to look up Moffat, as I've never ventured south of Edinburgh, except for a more westward drive around south Lanarkshire. Slàinte Mhaith!

    Huffing and puffing there Eddie 😂 Good video as always 👌

    • @EdExploresScotland
      @EdExploresScotland  3 месяца назад +1

      Not actually huffing and puffing as much as you hear. I'm still wrestling with final video audio volumes. This one was a little quiet (only 0.5db!), so RUclips 'normalised' it up a bit. In doing so they must use compression, and this has the effect of making background noises like huffing and puffing much louder than they actually are. The sound in this video on RUclips is very different to the sound of the actual video before upload.
