Featured in TIR Episode 126 (Parts 1 & 2 of 4; see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Al... ): Renowned music executive, tour manager and writer Alan Leeds, whose distinguished 50-year career includes working James Brown in the early 1970s and 10 years with Prince from the early 1980s to 1990s. Among the other artists Leeds, whose saxophonist brother Eric Leeds was a leading Prince collaborator, has been involved with are Kool & the Gang, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, Kiss, Cameo, Mavis Staples, Maxwell and D’Angelo.
He served as president of Prince’s Paisley Park Records label and in 1992 won a Best Album Notes Grammy Award for James Brown’s Star Time, one of many projects to which he has provided his eloquent liner notes. Leeds has a few books to his credit, including the long-anticipated tale of his time with J.B., titled “There Was a Time: James Brown, the Chitlin’ Circuit, and Me,” that is due out on February 25.
Here in a special 4-part TIR series, funk's most famous tour manager takes you on a riveting journey through a half century's worth of grooves and moves from artists with something to prove.

Scott, Some of Alan’s story sounds a lot like me. I am an 80s child who grew up in Suburbia. However, I have some Funk and Soul in me. I grew up with Rock in my childhood from The Mighty690 to 13K to Casey Kasem’s top 40. Duran Duran, The Clash, Pat Benatar, Madonna, all that. Also, through my brother’s tapes. Lakeside, The Whispers, Midnight Star, One Way, Cameo, The Barkays, and I could go on. Then, at 12 turning 13, I turnt the radio dial to XHRM 92.5, this was in 1985, and it was over and it was on! I fell deeper in love with Funk and Soul than I already was. I listened to 92.5 all through my teenage years waking up in the morning to getting home from school. Once, I was late for school because I wanted to hear the new single Whitney Houston came out with, I wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me. Another time, I walked home from school during lunch because I wanted to hear The Whispers interview since somebody from the radio station was gonna interview them. I ended up missing the interview because it was during the class before lunch time. I was upset! I got back to school on time though. At night, the DJ would play the Slow Jams and I would record them. After his show, KJLH would have their show, so, I’d listen from 8 O’Clock till 1 O’Clock in the morning. And, go to school and not say one word about staying up that late with the radio down to a whisper so nobody in the house would know that I was listening. They would play artists that nobody else would hear about. I was the only one in my neighborhood groovin to that music. Glenn Jones, Siedah Garrett, Pebbles, Al B Sure, Starpoint, Rebbie Jackson, Millie Scott, Scherrick, Gerald Alston, Levert, Miki Howard, Jerry Wu, Barry White, One Way, The Whispers, The Pasadenas, Cameo, Peabo Bryson, Regina Belle, Jeff Redd, Geoff McBride, The Force MDs, Full Force, Keith Sweat’s first and second albums, and I could go on and on. The listening, turned into collecting and I’ve collected for 30pluss years. And, the history of Funk and Soul is repeating itself. It was underground/not getting as much shine when I was a little girl, and it’s still not getting enough shine now. Before, we had radio. Now, we have the internet, and the Funk and Soul music goes on. Oldschool artists are making Newschool music, and Newschool artists are making Newschool music, and I don’t mean this autotunes and boody music and watereddown HipHop crap that the kids are listening to now because the big money people are pushing the music. I mean people like, and every artist I’m about to list, is either Oldschool or Newschool, making new music, they’re not getting the play that they should. The difference is, it’s on the internet now, playing hide and seek, and we have to look for it, because it’s not being promoted like it should be.

    Starpoint’s newer ballad -
Cosmic Stream off of their Fake News Music Don’t Believe Your Ears album on Itunes. Also, look for all of this on youtube. The Whispers newer music, Confunkshun’s newer music, Ty Causey, Tye Gunn, Terry Dexter, Lori Jenaire, MoFo Rising, Diamond Ortiz, Diamond Cafe, The Spinners Around The Block and Back Again album, The Temptations 60 album, Smokey Robinson’s new album Gasms, Melvin Riley from Ready For The World’s newer music, Rahsaan Patterson, Chaka Khan’s Funk This album, Al B Sure’s newer music, Taja Sevelle’s newer music, Gloria Ryann, Leah McFall, Alex Isley, Tyler The Creater, Adrian Younge’s music, Roy Ayers newer music, The Delfonics newer music, Jean Carne’s newer music, Shirley Jones from The Jones Girls newer music, Melisa Morgan’s newer music, Freddie Jackson’s newer music, Teri Tobin, October London’s music and he sounds like Marvin Gaye and he’s not a coppycat either, Damfunk, XL Middleton, Moniquea, and I could go on. What I’m sayin is, it is time for everybody, to go digging into the internet and find some music that they love that is not attatched to these award shows on TV or terrestrial radio. Thank God that Ledisi, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott get recognized, but there’s a whole lot more, including Jaguar Wright, despite what I may think, she does make great music. Much love Scott.

I love listening to Alan Leeds. He is so full of information and happy to share the stories of his life. No need to draw him out. You have to slow him down which reminds me of interviews of Owen Husney that I Have heard. Looking forward to Part 2.

"What were your impressions of James Brown...What was he like? How would you describe his temperament, how he interacted?" (28:03) GREAT QUESTION! I HOPE you asked the same question regarding Prince! THANX for this!

Love hearing Alan Leeds talk about the old days. with James.. so looking forward to him talking about the days with Prince and the similarities..
I find his voice sounds odd. It's almost like he's on the verge of getting all choked up. hope his health is good. and hope it's just the mic he's using or bad connection.

Thanks for the feedback, his voice issue was not due to anything technical but seemed to be a product of age. I noticed it wavering from time to time.

@@FunknstuffNet Thank you so much for the excellent interview with Mr. Leeds. I've enjoyed the countless JB comps he's helped put together and his book is way too short! Without prying too deeply I've wondered if he maybe had a stroke some years back as I noticed his voice was shaky on the commentary on the Mr. Dynamite documentary. His voice wasn't shaky sounding to me prior this and I've seen him interviewed many times. His voiced reminds me of how my Grandfather sounded after he'd had a stroke.
