I posted this comment on another video reaction to this song, thought it might be appreciated here: Cohn went to Memphis to try to find inspiration, he had writer's block. The trip transformed him, first by his visit to the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church to hear the Reverend Al Green preach. He said he sat there crying in the church, Al Green's service was one of the great experiences of his life. The other was Muriel Davis Wilkins who played at the Hollywood Cafe. He said he felt an immediate connection to her voice, her spirit, her face, and her smile and was totally transfixed by her music. They talked during breaks and he told her how his mother's death when he was very young left him feeling stuck, he could not get over it. He said the last song he and Muriel sang together was Amazing Grace and when they were done Muriel leaned over and whispered in his ear: 'Child, you can let go now.' He said it was almost as if his mother was there speaking to him. He went back the next year to play Walking in Memphis for Muriel, but she died before the finished song was released.
He did go back before the record was released and played some songs for Muriel, including this one. She told him she liked the song where he mentioned her the best.
W.C. Handy wrote and published the first commercially successful blues song. The Reverend Green refers to soul singer Al Green who preaches at his own church in Memphis.
Great song! So many good references about Memphis's musical roots. Not only Elvis, but American composer and musician W.C. Handy, (Nov. 16, 1873-March 28, 1958), was one of the pioneers of the Blues. Beale Street is the historic location where the Blues flourished, and Elvis hung out there quite a bit with none other than Mr. B.B. King. Elvis grew up around gospel, country, and blues. The Rev. Green Marc Cohn sang about is another legend in the music world by the name of Al Green. He was on every R&B station in the 70s.
Born and raised in Memphis- left after my mother’s death in 1981 when I was 24. It was a great place to grow up. Music of many kinds everywhere for kids to soak up. It’s never been a city of visual beauty, but I’ve always felt that was a good thing- no distractions from the music and the artists, many of them legendary, who performed there. One of the richest cities, that way, in the United States. I was one here who suggested this song. It brings back a torrent of electrifying memories. You made my day. Thank you!
Beautiful song by Marc Cohn, Beale Street is famous in Memphis. Some great bars that play the blues. Great restaurants with real southern cooking. And of course a trip to Memphis would be worth going the Graceland! I have fond memories of my time in Memphis just walking Beale Street and stopping to listen to some of the best blues you will ever hear. We can't go through Memphis without stopping to get BBQ Ribs.
This is in my top 10 of all time favorite songs ever. I just find it to be one of the most beautiful, well written and well arranged songs I've ever heard. The entire album is amazing. You should react to Silver Thunderbird, it has amazing storytelling!
I love this song. It came out when I was in college. I worked with a guy at a sub shop and he made the most interesting comment.. He said "I wish I'd written this." I haven't seen him in decades but I never forglt it!
He mentions WC Handy in this song and he was named the Father of the Blues/Delta Blues. He was born in my neck of the woods, Florence Alabama and theres an annual festival named for him in Florence Not far west from there is Clarksdale Ms that holds an annual jam featuring the blues. If u come to either of those you can Memphis and Nashville and even drive on the Natchez Trace Pkwy. Ok im sounding like a tourism board now. Great reaction and I love love this song ❤
Love this song. Nice to hear the original by Marc Cohn from 1991. I read somewhere that he said this song is 100 % autobiographical of his life. Many people have done covers of it including Cher in 1995 & Lonestar in 2003.
i'd say this was more in reverence to memphis than specifically elvis, though he is a key element that leads to paying homage to the legendary city. beautiful song, deep emotion conveyed ❤ you might have heard cher's cover of this first, back then. it was lovely but marc's original reaches deep down and cannot be topped. great reaction, saeed! thanks!
Grew up about an hour from Memphis & this is one of the best songs ever written about Memphis. 💙 Blue Suede Shoes was written by the late great Carl Perkins, pride of Jackson, Tennessee.
Wonderful selection Saeed, thank you! Great song, I understand it was inspired by actual events, an actual trip to Memphis, love the feeling of the song, the lyrics, the melody, Marc's vocals, just wonderful. Thank you again Saeed!
Heard him at Disney in the early 90’s. At the end, during the pause, someone yelled out “Rain”!!’ He used that as the excuse to play it over again from the beginning. A great moment and memory !!
This song was up for Song of the Year, not sure which year, but didn’t win. I was so disappointed, especially for Marc. It still gives me goosebumps. Thanks.
Not only could you hear the sadness in the lyrics and in his voice, you could see it in his eyes. The storytelling was so good. I read kwanshiyin's comment and it really hit me. I appreciated reading that ver much. It truly explains the song. Thank you, Saeed for reacting to this one. It really got to me.❤
One of my favorite lines... are you a Christian child and I said Mamn I am tonight 🙏 There ain't nothing blue about the Blues 🎶 Keep rockin' Brother and Spread the love 🐶😎🇺🇸
There is something about this song that just about moves me to tears. It touches something deep inside but I can't quite figure out why. It's been a long time since I've heard this one. What a nice surprise!
Check out Grayson Hugh "Talk it over" "Bring it all back" Henry Lee Summer "Wish I had a girl" Curtis Stigers "Never saw a miracle" "Sleeping with the lights on" "You're all that matters to me" "I wonder why" similar singing styles to Marc Cohn.
And speaking of Al Green... you should get him on your reaction list! Yes, he is a Reverend now, but before that he was a recording artist for many years. The problem is how to choose which song to react to first. Very tough call! Likely candidates include Tired of Being Alone, Let's Stay Together (his signature song), Love and Happiness, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, or I'm Still in Love With You.
Great song and great reaction! If you want to do something a little different react to "Elvis and the Black Community" (with Rev. Green). I think every reactor that does Elvis has reacted to this documentary.
There's so many songs about Elvis or Elvis mentioned. He was the best!! Please check out Alana Myles... Black Velvet and Elvis...68 Comeback Special Trying to Get To You and If I Can Dream in white suit. You should do more Elvis when you're done with Barbra Striesand rabbit hole. ❤

Sad! But such a beautiful story.

Love this one. "Tell me are you a Christian child? And I said, Ma'am I am tonight!" - one of my all time favorite lyrics.
It has to be top 10 ever !
That's the best part ❤

I came here to say this. The music in Memphis is magical. I actually got to see B.B. King at a club on Beale Street many years ago. Incredible!!!!
Black Velvet is another beautiful song about Elvis, by Alynnah Miles

If you’re into great piano I suggest Bruce Hornsby “The way it is”. Really deep lyrics to dive into
That one is on my list!

That reminds me. You need to hear Paul Simon's 'Graceland': brilliant story-telling.

Love Silver Thunderbird. Was surprised and delighted to find there's a karaoke version of it...

Cher does an awesome job singing this song.
This song was up for Song of the Year, not sure which year, but didn’t win. I was so disappointed, especially for Marc. It still gives me goosebumps. Thanks.
Loved tis song from first listen
Marc Cohn Silver Thunderbird - great song about father-son relationships
The piano arpeggios just slay me. I loved my visits to Memphis. Have yet to go to Gracelend. Maybe someday.
Hope you get there one day!
The first time I heard this it was sang by Cher as a cover. As good as she did on this one, l didn't get the same connection as with Marc Cohn.
